LHP Jack Flaherty (3-4, 4.81) vs RHP Jon Gray (6-1, 2.51)
BSM // KMOX
(and Bally Sports Southeast/Southwest Extra)June 6, 2023 at 10:24 pm #223654After some more sloppy play in last night’s game is this Marmol’s swan song?
June 6, 2023 at 10:30 pm #223656I doubt it. Mo just said the problem is inconsistency. Why fire the manager for that?
June 6, 2023 at 11:42 pm #223661I think this is another loss to cap off an 0-6 road trip but nothing substantive is going to change until Mo is shown the door. His plan has failed and the organization is bereft of talent and all levels. The Cardinals are an empty shell of what they used to be.
June 7, 2023 at 4:50 am #223665Recalling de witt’s interview posted a few days ago, and Mo and Marmol’s more recent comments, there just doesn’t seem to be any sense of urgency among the leadership. At the risk of beating a dead horse, as long as the Cardinals continue to fill seats and sell hot dogs with this less than mediocre team, who cares about results?
June 7, 2023 at 5:35 am #223666I bet Maddux is glad he’s sitting in the Rangers dugout instead of ours. It seems obvious now that more should have been read into him and Albert leaving. One wonders if Holliday was warned off by friends in the business. We will probably find out someday when somebody writes a book about this whole organizational fiasco.
June 7, 2023 at 6:41 am #223667I think the public lack of urgency is because they fear it would be equated with an admission of failure. That would be a big no no.
Privately I suspect there is some frantic scrambling going on. Whether that leads to substantive change remains to be seen.
June 7, 2023 at 10:56 am #223674I watched the interview with Johnny that some of you may have seen, and clearly heard him state that the primary issue that’s contributed to the failures of this ’23 edition Cardinal team was that they are inconsitent. Well, that statement can only lead me to conclude that Johnny doesn’t watch all of the games. I watch all of the games and the singlemost term I can use to describe this team would be consistent. All season long, and remarkably so. Now, I’m entirely aware that Johnny’s a busy man who is saddled with many taxing tasks and responsibilities. I would suggest that he delegate a portion of his workload to his traveling secretary so as to afford him the time watch his team a little more closely. If he indeed does, he’ll have no choice but to conclude that the Cardinals are unquestionably one of the most consistent teams in the Big Leagues.
June 7, 2023 at 11:11 am #223676Saying the Cardinals problem is inconsistency is like saying DeJong’s problem is inconsistency. Delusional rubbish.
June 7, 2023 at 11:17 am #223677All you have to do is look at the standings to see that with the possible exception of the A’s and Royals, the Cardinals are the most consistent team in the Big Leagues.
June 7, 2023 at 12:04 pm #223681I still think the Cardinals will end up winning the division and Mo and Junior know that. They’ll keep quiet until they can say I told you so.
June 7, 2023 at 12:19 pm #223682Taking a early gander at the out-of-town scoreboard today:
Oakland leads Pittsburgh 7-0 in the 2nd at Forbes Field.
The Dodgers and Reds are scoreless in the top of the 1st at Crosley Field.
Baltimore and Milwaukee, no score in the top of the 1st at County Stadium.
The Cubs are tied 0-0 with the Angels in the top of the first at Anaheim.
And I am leaving for the Amish restaurant, the Gasthof. Today’s din-din will be fried chicken, meatloaf, fish, mashed potatoes/gravy, noodles, green beans, baked carrots, dressing, sweet tea, cherry cobbler, and some vanilla soft serve ice cream for dessert. Yum yum!

June 7, 2023 at 12:49 pm #223686Nate, I would say that you, Mo, and BDW are the only three who think the Cardinals will win the division….lol
June 7, 2023 at 2:07 pm #223689I’m never ready to strike the colors, so to speak, until the simple arithmetic tells me there’s no other choice but to do so. The practical experience I’ve obtained from paying attention for a minute or two has clearly demonstrated that so long as a possiblility exists, it can become a reality. Things often change in a big hurry in baseball and with 99 games still undecided, the arithmetic has a ways to go before it proves there’s no option other than to roll it up and pack it in. I’m certainly not optimistic, but I can only go by what’s been presented before my eyes. Show me something different than what I’ve seen to this point and I’ll be presuaded towards a mindset that would advise the 4 teams standing atop the Redbirds in the NLC to stand out of the way.
June 7, 2023 at 2:19 pm #223690Nate, I would say that you, Mo, and BDW are the only three who think the Cardinals will win the division….lol
Nathan has always been a glass half full optimist.
June 7, 2023 at 2:28 pm #223692Looks like the Pirates are going to lose their second straight game the the A’s. I hope we don’t have to play Oakland any time soon.
June 7, 2023 at 3:22 pm #2237001. Brendan Donovan (L) 2B
2. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B
3. Nolan Gorman (L) DH
4. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
5. Willson Contreras (R) C
6. Alec Burleson (L) LF
7. Paul DeJong (R) SS
8. Jordan Walker (R) RF
9. Tommy Edman (S) CFJune 7, 2023 at 3:31 pm #223701I guess I was wrong when I said they didn’t bring Baker up to sit around. I guess they just want him to DH vs lefties, which makes no sense since he didn’t have a significant platoon split in Memphis
It should be noted that Baker has no experience with being a part time platoon player. Calling him up and then using him in a way he is not accustomed to is probably doing him a big disservice, and not putting him in a position to be successful. The computers wouldn’t factor that in. Albert probably would have mentioned it to Ollie, and probably would have been ignored. Shildt would have listened, which is why he got canned. Its a good example of why the team sucks.
June 7, 2023 at 3:59 pm #223708Thankfully I will miss tonight’s latest edition of the old Carol Burnett parody “As The Stomach Turns”, as we are headed across the street for a neighbor’s NBA Finals watch party. I think pizza and beer will be on the docket for din-din.
If this game ends like I expect it will and Marmol is still the manager going in to Friday’s game, I am going to be majorly, in the words of Wainwright, “PO’d”.
June 7, 2023 at 4:10 pm #223712That OF defensive lineup looks like a Maalox special.
June 7, 2023 at 4:16 pm #223713Albert probably would have mentioned it to Ollie, and probably would have been ignored
Bling, I never thought I would see Jeff Albert portrayed as the victim in a Cardinal forum…lol
June 7, 2023 at 4:21 pm #223714The outfield is going to be a train wreck until one or more of Nootbaar, Carlson, or O’Neill return. There is no combination of the available outfielders that is going to help in any way.
Teams generally tend to draft for offense. Defense is extra. It is what it is. The idea is to get a net positive taking both into account.
Unfortunately, so far our bat first outfielders have trended net negative.
I am drinking a Firefly tonight and hoping for the best.

Especially by me, but it just proves that things can always get worse.
June 7, 2023 at 4:53 pm #223718O’Neill doesn’t help the team. I’ll take Burleson or Yepez in left and having a clue at the plate other than O’Neills “elite defense” (I use that in quotes because I never thought it was, bad routes and no coordination just speed) and zero clue at the plate. But it’s only acceptable to hide them in LF if you’ve got Carlson and Nootbaar in CF and RF, but they need to pick up the D also.
