Collectively, this is the lineups batting line from last night.
How does the batting line factor in leaving the bases loaded three times with nothing to show for it?
The wonks will be touting that batting line and convincing Mo all is well there. They actually think that and believe it and teach it. I’m convinced of that. But hitting is about more than the slash line. It is about having more than an optimized swing. It is about being able to do something to contribute when something needs to be done. Putting a ball in play. Getting a fly ball. Hitting behind a runner. Something that helps. A hitter needs to be able to adjust what he is doing to improve his chances of contributing, of keeping something going. The batters that put up that impressive line sucked when it came to doing something when something needed doing. And they mostly looked really bad while they were doing nothing.
Five runs should be enough to win a game even if they left the bases loaded that many times. While I agree they need to work on situational hitting, it was the pitching that let us down in this game. Everybody was fresh because they had two days off so the bullpen was not overtaxed. Being able to throw the ball in triple digits means nothing if you can’t get it across the plate. Too many walks and poor pitch execution cost us this game.
For those that are calling the manager stupid I believe you are off base. Oli is just doing what the analytics department have outlined for him to do with Mozeliak and DeWitt’s blessing. If it was ONLY Marmol making these stupid decisions he would have been fired long ago. The blame lies with Dewitt and Mozeliak and as long as they are running the club this will be the product!
Better players make better managers. The cheap Cardinals keep bringing a knife to a gun fight. It’s not new – they have been blessed to be in a generally weak division lately but look at the post season results.
All the chickens have finally come home to roost so far this season and – yikes – the calendar has turned to June. 8 games under and floundering.
While there are examples of teams storming back from a poor start there are dozens of times MORE examples of teams that started poorly and were unable to overcome it.
This organization is completely wasting Goldschmidt and Arenado’s remaining good seasons. Why?
Expecting the lineup to bail out the pitching every night, and blaming the lineup when they dont, or the analytical room, is just naive.
A BA of .333 w/runners in scoring position last night should even register well with the cavemen who want more! With this pitching staff it will seldom be enough, hence our W/L record.
If we allow 7 runs again today, come back and tell me the lineup should have done more, I am enjoying the laugh. You can’t seriously expect 8 runs per game.
Lay the blame where it belongs, on Gallegos, if you can get past your denial.
