I’m not sure about this, but would it be a good idea when playing on the road in extras to IBB the lead-off man in a tie game to place the GIDP in order? I mean, the runner at 1st base means absolutely nothing in that situation other than to set up a force or a GIDP. I guess the down side is you risk another BB to move a runner over to 3B with no outs, but the concept somehow seems to have it’s advantages too. I guess it also depends on who’s stepping into the box, but I think it may be a viable option at times.
It depends on the hitter and the pitcher If the hitter is good, then that’s probably a good strategy. But if you’re pitcher is wild – maybe not a good strategy.
As jnevel alluded to the top four in the lineup finish 0-17 tonight. Won’t win many games doing that.
Yeah, it’s certainly not a cure all, Jnevel, and I guess there is no such thing. I am still certain about one thing…I’d lead-off with a sac-bunt every time and then some.
I don’t want to be mean, but Barrera was about like putting a stone Buddha back there the way that ball bounced off him. Did he even flinch?
Am I the only person who was cursing the manager when he removed the .500-hitting Mercado for the .229-hitting Burleson, with the go-ahead run in scoring position in the 8th inning? (Burleson’s numbers lately are in fact actually much worse than .229, by the way. He’s a meager 12-for-65 since mid-April.) All because a righty pitcher entered the game. He fanned the badly slumping Burley, of course.
It took the Boy Wonder 25% of the season to realize the 22-year-old Nolan Gorman might not be a strict platoon player for the rest of his career, but even though Ollie’s apparently corrected that bit of idiocy there is apparently no hot streak or cold streak or combo of the two sufficient to neutralize the Boy Wonder’s destructive righty/lefty obsession. His stubborn, simplistic pseudo-understanding of the sport at its highest level is so narrow and abacus-driven that it’s almost like he never played or managed above A-Ball in his life. Oh, wait….
Bob, I agree pulling a blistering hot bat in favor of a room temperature one was maddening. But the computer doesn’t believe in streaks or momentum. Whoever set up the algo defined a sample size large enough to obviate the short term trends. OliMo listens to the computer or is on the couch with Schildt.
I understand the angst about Ollie’s decision to pull Mercado and use Burleson. I was slightly surprised myself. But honestly, against Diaz, there’s a really good chance that Mercado strikes out too and we’re all sitting here saying, “You had Burleson on your bench who is a lefty with good contact skills. If not now, when’s the right time to ever use him?”
And while Barrera needs to be better at receiving the ball, I don’t blame him either. He gets basically no chance to catch any big leaguers sitting on the bench for a couple weeks and then suddenly gets thrown out there in a nailbiter situation and gets Ryan Helsley throwing gas at him. That’s a tough situation.
No, the real reason we lost is because Jordan Montgomery was bad. The Reds have a bad lineup to begin with but they are even more atrocious against left handed pitching. And yet they got 7 hits and 3 walks off Jordan in 4 innings. He didn’t pull his weight at all yesterday. Lots of poor execution. And the other reason we lost was that our first four going 0 for 17. That happens. But it shouldn’t happen at GABP against the Reds. Those guys need to produce better.

Cincy pitched well to close the game. PDJ tried to be the hero last night, and even he K’d three times (as did Arenado).
We did score five runs, but it would have taken at least 7 or more to win last night. Sound familiar?

Very true bling. Someday the posters on this board will figure out that the job of the Cardinal manager is to read the spreadsheets from above and act accordingly. It has been that way since the end of 2011. You would think that hiring three rookie managers in a row would be a big enough hint to what is going on but apparently not.
Does the computer ever get a gut feeling? Or make an outside the box judgment call? Or have a hunch? Or take a player’s psyche into account?

Gorman was sent down last year. Maybe too late for you but he went back down Sep 19.

I could certainly be wrong, but I seem to recall that Gorman finished out the ’22 regular season as a member of the 26 man and was then left off of the post-season roster.
Gorman was on the postseason roster. He drove in one of the Cards’ three postseason runs and had a sizzling 2.000 OPS.
Nope, I was wrong. Gorman’s last ’22 appearance in a regular season Big League game occured on 9/18.
