There is a 1% chance that Marmol has the authority to use Liberatore as he sees fit. I can almost guarantee you it was a collaborative decision but blaming it on Marmol is easier since he isn’t hiding in a private suite.
They sure did, gscottar. And although the Brewers managed to salvage a game at Tampa today, they now head to HOU for 3 games with the reigning WS champions. They won’t find any bargains in that aisle.
As of today, 5/21, The Cards are 4 games out of the second WC slot.
Right now, The Pirates have the 2nd slot. Teams ahead of us for that slot are: Marlins, Mets, Phillies, Giants and Padres. We are percentage points ahead of the Cubs. Nats are a half game back.
Not that it matters a whole lot. The Central Division leader is only 1 game ahead of the 2nd WC slot, and there are only two teams ahead of us for that, The Crew and the Bucks. If it was August 21, I’d say, yeah, we got a hole to climb out of. But on May 21 I don’t even call that a hole. Its just a little hill. Unless we turn back into a bunch of wieners we got this.

So this explains the recent avatar. I wondered, so congrats. Wife and I also had our first grandbaby (also a girl) not too long ago.
Speaking of tilting ’em back, I had been threatening to slip the little girl some ice cream mostly to tease my daughter, who has been staunch about no junk food and little sugar the first year. Well, we just had the first birthday party with cake smashing and all. My daughter also let me give little bit her first ice cream. She looked like she became possessed and her mouth got locked in the open position wanting more, haha.
Haha!…Yeah, Euro, I can’t wait until mine’s about a year or two old so that I can begin to deploy those types of antics! Before she came along, I was only known as “paw-paw” to my son’s yellow labrador retreiver…Although he’s now getting a bit long in the tooth at almost 13, he’s my only and favorite granddog and we’d always sneak some pizza and ice cream together when my son wasn’t looking…Sometimes he’d catch us and we’d both be in trouble…Haha!
Congrats 1tough on the new grandchild. Mine just turned 13 months this past Friday. He’s the reason I don’t get on here as much as I used to. His parents are young and still like to do their thing, so we get him pretty much every weekend. He’s a treat.
A lot of similarities 1td. A lab at 13 is long in the tooth! My daughter’s dog is a 10 y/o Golden Retriever. The Golden knows who to hit up to get her treats when I’m around, with my daughter always telling me that’s probably enough. Again, I’m the bad guy in these things and known in the family as the weak link (granddog or granddaughter). When little bit was slinging her birthday cake everywhere, the Golden had a field day mopping up the floor. Daughter couldn’t do anything but watch, lol.
Now that I’m afforded the chance to watch the replay of today’s game, I’d be entirely remiss in not mentioning Mercado. What a genuine shot in the proverbial arm this guy’s been the last few games! I don’t recall ever getting a look at him anywhere he’s played and don’t mind saying that when after first looking him up when he emerged as a Redbird I was not at all impressed by what I saw, but he’s getting to be where you almost have to play him somewhere in the OF every day at least until he cools off. At any rate, it takes all hands on deck to really set sail.
Haha! I’ll bet Golden knows it’s in his best interest to hang out with little bit…He’s positioned perfectly and dead set ready to back up the play at HP and pounce on those errant throws…Haha!
Thanks, Willie! We haven’t had our granddaughter over to our house yet without her mom and dad, but I’m looking forward to it when she’s a little older. My son’s just a month shy of 40 and his wife’s a couple of years younger. They both normally work from home and she’s on leave for a while yet, so they’re covered on that end. At any rate, Mrs. 1TD and myself both like to spend as much time over there with our new baby granddaughter as is allowed…Mrs. 1 TD even remarked the other day that she feels like she needs to book an appointment to see her…Haha!

IMO we still need 2 starting pitchers. Good ones not just inning eaters.

We have two outfielders on the IL and still neither Burleson nor Yepez can get in the lineup regularly. That tells us something about their value.
There is zero value defensively but I think Burleson and Yepez could have some value at DH yet they rarely ever get that opportunity with the Cardinals because of our middle infield logjam that seems to require Gorman to be the DH. I imagine there are other teams out there who wouldn’t mind giving Burlseon and Yepez a shot at DH.
Agreed they have SOME value, but I suspect not enough to land a very good starting pitcher, which we would all probably agree is the greatest need.
I bet most organizations have good minor league hitters but unproven at the MLB level for whom they would like to give more MLB at-bats. In other words, are Yepez and Burly all that unique?
Enough value to trade for a LH reliever maybe? Seems like we could use another one. Cabrera is iffy at best. Libby is a starter, Thompson is being turned into a starter (so they say) and the others at Memphis are really no better than Cabrera.
A good one may cost more than one of them but maybe both. Or one of them and someone else.
I agree a good starter is going to cost a lot in trade.

I’d say yes on Yepez. You don’t see other guys do what he can do in the OF, LOL.
Sorry about that, but correct that we wouldn’t get a pitching upgrade in return for them. John Lackey trades don’t grow on trees.
Of course they aren’t going to bring back someone like Bieber, Giolito, or Cease. I wasn’t indicating they would, however if they aren’t going to be utilized properly with the Cardinals, I would like to see them moved for something. It would be to their benefit and would provide us a little more clarity.

gscott, I’ve seen the word “clarity” more than I care to the last few weeks, hehe. It makes me laugh now. In fact, a couple days ago Mo said something like “I think that’s what we’re thinking” in response to a question about the 6-man rotation. Now that’s some real clarity for you.
At least this stuff is easier to swallow when they’re winning!
They could DFA Yepez tomorrow and I wouldn’t even blink. I know a beer league softball swing when I see it, and if he goes elsewhere and becomes a middle order bat, good for him. Our roster is what concerns me, and Yepez doesn’t fit it.
If they trade Burleson tomorrow I need to like the return, because I like the way Burleson competes at the plate. His outfield corner D is slightly below avg to my eye, but not embarressingly bad.
Burleson has 169 PA’s at the show and I’d like to see more. Surely he won’t continue having a .227 BAbip. His GB% has came down, he K’s 50% less than LG avg, and he uses the opposite field nearly as much as the pull side.
Lumping Burleson and Yepez together, as comparable or as roster fringe players, doesn’t fly for me.
I know we’d like our 4th OF to be a burner who can play all 3 spots, but we also need a LHB off the bench who can compete well as a PH. If we trade him we likely are looking for the same bench type to backfill.
I’m out of leash for Yepez, but Burly I have patience left for.
Burleson has shown the ability to be a potentially more disciplined hitter than Yepez. I agree with that. I would have to rate his D as worse than slightly below average but that is from the subjective eye test. From my point of view he has a lot of work to do to even be as good a defender as Kyle Schwarber.
My overall point is that if the Cardinal roster was structured properly we shouldn’t have to worry about their defense because the two of them would be sharing DH duties. Last year it was Pujols/Dickerson and this year it has been Gorman/Contreras. Gorman should be playing 2B everyday, period. Contreras should be catching everyday, period. Edman, Donovan and PDJ can fight over the SS/utility scraps.
