jj-cf-stlParticipantPossibly lost in this trainwreck of a season is that we now have a leadoff man with a Matt Carpenter eye at the plate, and power. He’s a plus corner outfielder who can even hold down CF when needed. Other teams saw this last season and targeted Nootbaar from us if we even mentioned the word “trade”, over the winter.
Pair him with our HR and RBI leader Gorman, and we have developed two very solid lefty bats to go with Golden-Nado. Tweek that lineup all you want, I’d be thrilled to NOT hear “we’re on the lookout for a lefty bat to help balance our lineup” from the FO going forward.
Noot, Gorman, Donovan, Edman and Carlson is a good lefty bat core. If Burly, who has been stinging the ball lately with little results, takes that next step….
May 17, 2023 at 12:28 pm #220801Six innings is the new complete game.
For you youngsters out there, a pitcher who works the entire game didn’t used to be a novelty.

cardsfan64ParticipantSounds like the Cardinals are calling up Oscar Mercado for today’s game, which would indicate an IL stint for Dylan Carlson (teams can backdate up to three days). #STLCards

May 17, 2023 at 2:11 pm #220809I’m in 100% agreement with you gscottar in regards to I’m all for staggering the L/R, L/R sort of approach but by no means do I feel it should be the overriding approach under all circumstances. I’ll also say that you’re entirely right about TLR slotting Larry Walker at 2, but I have to point out that that team was absolutely saturated with a mulitude of extremely dangerous power bats that included Larry Walker, Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen, Reggie Sanders and even Ray Lanford. That’s a big sack packed jammed full of taters to the tune of over 2300 career HR’s and almost 8000 RBI’s…Haha! That fact afforded TLR with all sorts of options insofar as where he placed his henchmen and I’ll also point out that his #1 Luca Brasi in the person of Albert Pujols was ALWAYS placed in the 3 slot precisely where he belonged. At any rate, opposing pitchers were absolutely ground down to a nub when facing all those guys located in the teeth of the batting order, which is what I’m driving at when I mention the need to place as many dangerous power bats as is possible consecutively into the order behind guys with the ability to reach base and hopefully with a little speed to provide some extra pressure on the pitcher. Have those guys reach and then have the big kids blast ’em across HP.

stlcard25ParticipantBest 4, hit top 4, but you don’t go L,L, R,R; so we have Noot, Goldy, Gorman and Nado. Basic schoolyard logic that teams still follow.
The next 3 you look for slg/rbi and last 2 for obp/speed.
I will never be in favor off weakining the top of the order to build a stronger back of the order.
Agree there. Edman is not a good on base guy, so I’m happy to keep him at the bottom of the lineup.
May 17, 2023 at 2:38 pm #220811No, he’s not, 25, but you could slot him at 2 and cut down on the odds of a GIDP in the event that either he or lead-off hitter reaches. He also provides both a genuine SB threat and the ever present ability to score from 1B on any xtra base hit. He’s also a .270 career hitter who’s averaged a sliver under 92 runs scored in 3 full seasons. I’ll also take Donovan in the 2 slot. In any event, I’ll go down with the ship that flies the colors of the flag that says Goldy belongs at 3…
May 17, 2023 at 2:42 pm #220812I guess we could discuss line-up construction until the cows come home, but I’m reasonably sure everyone agrees we need a W tonight…Haha!
May 17, 2023 at 2:48 pm #220813LHP Matthew Liberatore has been recalled, OF Óscar Mercado has been selected, RHP James Naile has been optioned, OF Dylan Carlson has been placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to 5/15) and LHP Packy Naughton has been moved to the 60-day IL, the #STLCards announced.

May 17, 2023 at 3:11 pm #220816I was in favor of signing Cody Bellinger in the off season. He could play CF for us and hit between Goldschmidt and Arenado. Everybody thought that was a bad idea. And now he’s doing fairly well for the Cubs.
r/Esteemed Rat
May 17, 2023 at 3:22 pm #220818He’s no bargain at $17.5MM, but it’s only for 1 season and I sure wouldn’t have complained if he’d signed with the Cardinals. He’s only 28 and the fact remains he’s a former NL MVP winner who comes with a GG in CF. And like Rats mentioned, he’s had a solid season for the Cubs at this juncture. I’ll also state that although it’s a sacrilege to say so, I’d take him over any of other OF’er we have including, The Nootz…Haha!
May 17, 2023 at 3:47 pm #220822Since MLB seems to be in cahoots with legal sports book wagering outfits like DraftKings, Bally Corp etc. maybe the money will be so heavily loaded on the side of Burnes as opposed to the upstart Libratore that the MLB office in NY will place a call to tonight’s umpiring crew instructing the boys in blue to be certain that the Redbirds are afforded enough favorable calls to win tonight’s ballgame and provide a nice payday for the fellas at the top of the gaming syndicates…”Make certain it’s subtle, but make certain it happens…We don’t like to be disappointed…Clear?”
May 17, 2023 at 3:56 pm #2208231. Lars Nootbaar (L) CF
2. Paul Goldschmidt (R) DH
3. Nolan Gorman (L) 2B
4. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
5. Willson Contreras (R) C
6. Brendan Donovan (L) 1B
7. Alec Burleson (L) LF
8. Paul DeJong (R) SS
9. Tommy Edman (S) RFMay 17, 2023 at 4:08 pm #220825
jj-cf-stlParticipant1TD, I keep Edman and Donovan through their club control. I’m not in favor of subtracting from the lefty bats we’ve developed (above), so I’m right there with you on their value to the club. Righties PDJ, O’Neill and Yepez would be my trade bait this deadline.
Having said that, knowing I’m a firm supporter of Edman and Donovan, couldn’t they do all those positive skills you mentioned, just as well at the bottom of the order? Maybe score less runs? Their skills aren’t dependent on a batting order position.
Uh-oh, a Holstein just walked by…
May 17, 2023 at 4:19 pm #220826Liby has had 8 AAA starts since his dismal start for STL last October. Like BW says, young guys can get better. Lets hope those 8 starts did wonders.
May 17, 2023 at 4:31 pm #220828We’ve got 4 GG winners in the lineup tonight. Only one, NA, playing a defensive position where he earned the GG. (Assuming Donovan didn’t win the UT GG for his exploits at 1B).
May 17, 2023 at 4:49 pm #220833The problem remains that it takes two to trade. And if I am the other team and I am given two lists of players, I want the guys on the A list every time, not the B one.
A: Edman, Donovan
B: O’Neill, DeJong, YepezMay 17, 2023 at 5:35 pm #220834DeJong likely still has negative value where we’d have to eat some of his contract to get anything. O’Neill may have some value but I don’t think it’s all that much at this point. Other teams see the same things we see. Injuries, strikeouts and inconsistent hitting. Potential to be like 2021 is the only thing holding him to any value but when you subtract his contract, it just isn’t much. And Yepez has likely lost a lot of value in the last 18 months. He’s worth what you’d pay a bench bat in the offseason who can’t play a position plus a little in potential and controlled years. So, maybe a team’s #25 prospect roughly? But no matter how you slice it, none of these in any combination is netting us a good pitcher unless it’s one who’s a long ways off who comes with high risk. We likely have to give up one of Edman, Donovan, or Carlson to get a solid pitcher and losing any of them might make us worse in other ways.
May 17, 2023 at 5:40 pm #220835As I said before, it is good that Nudie Bar is doing well. He’s hitting well and his outfield defense is good. However, I am not ready to declare him the 2nd Coming. Let’s see where he’s at when the All Star Break rolls around in a couple of months.
May 17, 2023 at 6:02 pm #220836Bader got us a year and a half of Montgomery. That is what pitching costs in trade. If you want better than a year and a half of Montgomery, it takes more than an everyday gold glove center fielder.
May 17, 2023 at 6:21 pm #220837Decided to come to the ballpark tonight to see our boys in action from the semi-well-appointed Redbird Club! Hope to get a better perspective of their approach at the plate and strategy on defense than you can see on camera. Mostly I hope to smell fireworks smoke from Cards round-baggers and the W at the end!
May 17, 2023 at 6:36 pm #220838Not sure it would serve to more arouse a hungry fish to bite, but you may be able to sweeten BW’s B. list with the addition of Burleson. At any rate, I’m not sure it matters whether or not DeJong’s name is even mentioned unless it’s deemed unwise to do so for fear of spooking the fish. I’ll also say that I’m in agreement with jj insofar as I think both Eddie and Donnie are keepers, but not only do I think the former doesn’t keyway in with the team’s future plans, but also that Edman is unquestionably the player that would be the centerpiece of any package that the Cardinals would be willing to offer up that would draw a tremendous amount of interest from another team and possibly induce them to offer up a player that could have the potential to make that trade a winner for the Redbirds. I’m aware that this sounds like a guess, and it is, but watching games when the camera on the TV broadcasts pans in on an opposing manager’s expression, I’ve sensed many times over the past couple of years by the look that opposing manager’s face that he was thinking, “I wish I had that player on my roster,” when Eddie either makes a play with the glove, lifts another SB, or comes around to score. In fact, I saw that same expression on Craig Counsell’s face a couple of times during this series. You can be assured that there’s a multitude of teams that’d be thrilled to have him.
May 17, 2023 at 6:39 pm #220839“Redbird Club!”… Can you loan me $5?…Haha! Enjoy the game, 4Ev!
May 17, 2023 at 6:46 pm #2208401TD – would like to loan you some cash, but after my $23 hot dog, fries and soda, and my beautiful frau’s $20 pizza and soda, I’m a little short!
May 17, 2023 at 6:51 pm #220841Haha!…Just make sure none of those evil baseball gypsies are around to drop a spider into the mustard on that $23 hot dog!
May 17, 2023 at 6:58 pm #220842Nice!…Now, stretch it out.
