If we don’t start winning, Marilyn is going to need an intervention.

Matz is actually pitching well today despite the results. Not as good as Sale looks, but good for Matz. Wasting less pitches. Hitting the edges and corners.

    With an average left fielder . . . Heck with a mediocre left fielder . . . It’s still 1-0.

This is why I still am in favor of playing Donovan despite the left hander. Donovan catches that ball and likely isn’t going to hit much worse than Yepez against Sale.

There is a spreadsheet that says you’re wrong Jnev. You can’t argue with the wonks.

I was thinking Matz’s control looks real good, but he doesn’t get a lot of swing and miss. If he can keep shaving the corners he will keep catching them looking though

Still have a chance in this game, but not too long ago Sale with a 3 run lead seemed insurmountable. He’s only allowed 2 hits in 65 pitches, so unless the Cardinals can figure him out, he’ll be around for a couple of more innings.

Sale looks really good though. Terrific pitch movement. Hitting the edges too. Why did we suddenly have to get good Sale on the day we got good Matz? What are the odds?

Here’s where it gets dangerous for Matz. Middle of the order 3rd time through. But we need the innings so he has to pitch

Matz was not happy to get the hook.

And no quality start again. A couple pitchers to that last hitter could have been strikes but not today.

    C’mon Matz you schleprock!!

This has the potential to go from a pretty average start for Doormatz to a bad one if VerHagen is IDGAF mode.

Nice work by VerHagen to keep it 3-0. Only 3 Redbird baserunners in this game and none of them has strayed past 1B since the Contreras double in the 1st. Can’t score 4 runs like that.

OK, Matz has looked pretty good twice now. We need a new narrative. Think, people.

These last two starts have been good for Matz. I don’t really have high expectations for him. We signed him to be a #4/5 starter with the hope he might become a number 3. He’s been the 4/5 plus had some injuries. So thus far not great. But if he can do what he did today, he’ll be successful. Assuming Yepez doesn’t keep playing the outfield.

    Haha! There’s a way to score without a baserunner…

Yepez swung at a 3rd strike that untied his shoelace.

Right. I just don’t know why Yepez is playing left field today. That is such a poor decision. He isn’t the kind of hitter that can’t hit Sale (to be fair, today no hitter is the kind of hitter that hits Sale). But not only do we get an auto out at the plate, but he’s terrible in the outfield. I hated this decision. Usually I can understand why we do the things we do even if I don’t agree. But this decision was bad.

Yeah, I’m not blaming Yepez. With very few exceptions, Sale’s made the entire line-up look foolish today. And that Refsnyder double off the LF wall was a tough play for any OF’er.

It was a tough play because Yepez didn’t get over there in time.

Well, if nothing else, we got to see a SP’er demonstrate how to put in a day’s work.

If I were Cora I’d be real tempted to let him start the 9th.

No, he sure didn’t, Jnevel, but he got over there a lot better than he normally does…Haha!
