I am guessing Marmol went with his best in the seventh to try to hold onto the lead with a rally underway. I don’t think it was the passing of the guard at closer. Helsley has done nothing to lose the job. Great to see Gallegos do well however he is used.

Does that mean hitting about .200-.300-.400 because if he ops’d .700 it would be a miracle based upon the previous 2 seasons production. Maybe if he could at least do that he’d be a trade target for some sucker. Lol

It’s not but what’s your solution? Edman has consistently shown his obp will regress and will end up a bottom of the order hitter. It may change but he has a track record and it would be hard for me see it becoming the norm to obp .340. Maybe an outlier for a season.
We need Donovan to wake a bit but he has time. If he doesn’t I think we have more issues that seem to be piling on.

Donovans BAbip last season, of nearly .040 over mlb avg, was a valid regression candidate. Now that he’s .003 over, his K per BB has gone from 1.17 to 3.00, his line drive % is down and pop-up % has doubled, he looks less like a world beater.
Why? Last season Donovan went to the opposite field 73% as much as he pulled. This season he’s at 35% of his pull rate. If/when he gets his Jon Jay opposite field stroke back, he numbers will improve. The numbers say his barrel is out front (early).I agree with LACardFan. I liked the top of the lineup today. Nootbaar gets on base with ok speed. Then they alternate left and right handers. This lineup is great for right handed pitchers- which is most of the time. Against lefties, Edman is a great pick to lead off. Or maybe Carlson.
As expected jj. Its his new optimized swing. The science and technology crowd can tell you how exit velo and barrel rate depends upon having the barrel out front early, so now it is. (Actual results may vary.) Forget letting it come in deep, trusting your hands, and hitting it where it is pitched. That’s for chumps.

We need to remember these are percentages. Is 4% really statistically different than the average? 0.3% most definitely is not.
Yep, the hands and wrists are not only the key to making solid contact, but also generate immense power when the load’s shifted properly . Aaron was the perfect illustration of that reality. Furthermore, I think it’s the primary reason Gorman appears to effortlessly generate so much power. The baseball takes off like a cork out of a magnum size bottle.
I really don’t know what to make of this lineup. We seem to have too many overlapping players and mediocre options and not enough everyday players. It is difficult for guys to get into a rhythm when there is constant change. Other than Goldy, Arenado, and Contreras it is difficult to predict who is going to be playing and what order they will be in the lineup. It is kind of indicative of our entire roster. Too many average players and not enough players good enough to force the manager to play them everyday.
I agree about the difficulty of a player finding a rhythm or defining his role, gsottar, and although they won today and he featured the game changing 3 run HR, I don’t like Gorman in the 3 slot. That’s Goldy’s domain. I’d like to see Gorman placed behind Arenado and stay there until there’s no choice but to place him elsewhere in the line-up.
Speaking of Gorman what does his long term future in the field look like? Surely he won’t be a DH forever will he? That is a problem that I see with this team. We have too many guys who don’t seem to have a permanent home at one position. We have too many DH types and too many misfits playing out of position. This weakens our defense and exacerbates our pitching issues.
Well, one of the best things about baseball is that there always seems to be another game tomorrow and it sure was nice to see a W in the left hand column today. And I can’t speak for anyone else, but to me it’s some solace in the sense that the perfect illustration of how bizarre the beginning of this ’23 season has been is that my favorite team is 6.5 games back, but looking up at the first place, er, uh…Pirates! Haha…That tells me that the current conditions will almost certainly bring a welcomed turnabout.

LA, it is in jj’s point. This reminds me of why economists speak in terms of basis points instead of percentages when talking interest rate changes of X amount. Otherwise, the language can be confusing and interpreted two different ways. Does it mean the difference is X or the percent increase is X?
The point jj was making was Donovan’s average of balls in play of .330 vs MLB avg of .290 in 2022, and now he’s down to about .294. That is significant. In terms of real batting averages, that would be similar to comparing a .260 hitter to a .300 hitter (a .04 difference), one being adequate and the other near the best.
The starting pitching situation has stabilized, unfortunately at a level below where it needs to be to contend. At least we’re not letting the other guys put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard anymore, as TLR used to say.
If these guys could record just two more outs, on average, we will start winning 2 out of 3 quite regularly, with our offense.April 23, 2023 at 9:03 am

blingboyI bash PDJ as much as anybody, but man, I am hoping for a miracle. We need something and it doesn’t matter how unlikely of a place it comes from. Light em up Paulie.
DeJong looked much better at the plate and even if this is for only one game PDJ accomplished what ZTR and bling were looking for. ps…. check out the times of these two posts.
