RHP Mitch Keller (1-0, 3.86 ERA+) vs. RHP Miles Mikolas (0-1, 9.64 ERA+)

(and Bally Sports Southeast/Southwest)We couldn’t lose three of four to the Pirates at home – could we?
I believe Mikolas will finally get going and turn in a good seven innings in this one. I am going to call this one 7-2 Redbirds with Goldschmidt getting off the schneid with a long dong to right center.
And my din din for this one will be a center cut rib chop in the air fryer, some mashed potatoes/gravy, a couple ears of sweet corn, a nearly frozen Mt. Dew, and a piece of white cake with a lot of yellow icing. Then a Cuban Sandwich cigar. Of course, Whitey Herdog will be on the couch with me for this one.

Right now it is hard to say with this bunch. They are not playing good baseball. I’ve always said though that you usually don’t know what you’ve got until towards the end of May.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all gang up on somebody today and drench him with praise for an outstanding day of baseball?
I’d say that’s a very good benchmark, ZTR. Memorial Day’s still relatively early, but 50 to 60 games should be enough time to at least sort through and refine a 26 man roster. I’ve heard it said many times that there’s no point in even glancing at the standings until Labor Day, but I don’t retain enough self control to allow me to keep from sifting through them at the conclusion of the scheduled slate on opening day…Haha! In any event, let’s hope the Cardinals have formulated a recipe for success before June.
Mikolas has placed an 0-1 W/L record on the books thus far in ’23 and will take his 4th turn in the rotation today. Despite an ERA north of 10.00, he’s only worked a shade beyond 14 IP’ed in his previous 3 turns. He’s fortunate to not be 0-3 at this juncture. He certainly has a hill to climb, but if he can feature a real nice turn today with 7 or more IP’ed and be the winning pitcher of decision, he’d sit at a respectable 1-1 and have a chance to reduce that ERA to a little under 7.00. Certainly not spectacular, but hey, it’s something to aim for…

Funny how that is never said when the conversation concerns a team that is winning big early and leaving the rest of the division in the dust.

9. Tommy Edman (S) SSYeah, it sure is funny. But then again, it ain’t so funny when a team is leaving everyone else in the dust and then suffers a monumental collapse in August or September. I remember the Redbirds enjoying a 7 or 8 game lead over Houston in Sept. of ’06. The Astros went on a tear on the back of Lance Berkman and almost caught the Cardinals on the last day of the regular season. I remember being horrified that my favorite team was going to be saddled with the same legacy as that of the ’64 Phillies…Haha! Turned out okay, though.
The Cardinals benefitted from somebody else’s late season collapse recently. I figure, worry about April in April and August in August.
I’ve been trying to construct an argument for how going with Hicks in the 10th was consistent with putting the team in the best position to win. Coming up empty. Pallante was rested and would be perfect for potentially a multi-inning outing. The only thing I can think of is the pitching strategery wiz-bangs had been working with Hicks on dialing back from triple digits and using the slider to achieve fewer walks, so they wanted to try it out. Let’s not do that again. Just start the 10th with a runner on second and the ball in the bleachers.
How about we let the bay boy take the lineup card to the umps, and send Marmol down to the low minors to learn how to manage

Because of how much the bullpen has been worked in recent games, #STLCards manager Oliver Marmol said the team only had four relievers available today: Helsley, Stratton, Cabrera and Hicks.
Four relievers were rested today: Gallegos, Thompson, VerHagen and Pallante.

Following a meeting with Jordan Hicks, #STLCards manager Oli Marmol said the team will use the RHP in low- leverage spots in order to help him try & regain his form. Because of his MLB service time Hicks had to approve any Minor League assignment & that's not an option. (1/3)

Odds are that they wouldn’t have needed a multi-inning outing from Pallante or anyone else. With the make believe runner farce, if you go for the quick kill playing at home with a successful sac bunt, there’s a very good chance that runner at 3B with 1 out will be pushed across for the W. I’d do it every time without any hesitation.
What’s the weather like in St. Louis today? It’s cool and windy here in SW Indiana. Highs in the low 50s. They even said a chance of snow up around Indianapolis.
