Contreras is killing us! Like I said earlier, I would not have him at the 5 spot right now. Once he heats up move him up. Cards swinging at some bad pitches right now. Need to make Johan throw strikes. Got the fly ball two hitters too late.

Didn’t get any better on the next one.

Man alive…At the corners and no outs and then 3 outs quicker than you can say Rumpel…

Same as last night. Waste multiple chances, let them hang around until finally something bad happens.

Good outfield defense tonight. Haven’t seen as much of that this year, but understand that Junior is doing some OJT.

Jake’s scattered 7 hits, but with a little help from his friends he’s working a decent turn through 5. Obviously, he just needs to prevent the baseball from leaving the field of play.

How come this guy doesn’t still work for us?

Burleson an off night at the plate. Swings at a horrible pitch in his last AB, then lets a pitch right down the middle to by this time. Let’s see, think we are oh for 11 in this series so far with RISP.

Oviedo’s looked pretty good with those 8 K’s. The Pirates have to be thinking they came out alright after that phone conversation with Johnny…

Disagree with lifting Woody here. But then most of the time I think managers use too many pitchers.

Yeah; as I mentioned 1TD, I liked Johan as a Cardinal. You could see he had the pedigree, but we sort of force fed him to the majors too soon due to attrition of our pitching at the time.

No reason Hicks cannot be as good or better if the Cards would just let him develop as a starter.

Well Woodford with a good game tonight. Outside of that first game he’s pitched well enough. But here we are through 14 innings against the pirates and haven’t scored. Not going to win many like that no matter who is on mound for you.

    Why lift Woody now?

I think woody being at 81 pitches had a lot to do with it. Plus more likely to leave something up further he goes, so get him out so he comes away with positive experience.

Why take Woodford out there? At least wait until a man gets on.

Why is Contreras still hitting 5th? He should be in the 7 hole until he finds his stroke.

Oviedo wearing Dick Groat’s number. There is a name from the past – former Buc and Redbird.

Contreras needs a couple of days off. He’s really a mess at the plate right now.

As I keep saying, I really like what I am seeing of Gorman. Needs to be in the 5 spot right now.

I disagree with all of you. Woodford was really bad tonight and extremely lucky. He left lots of balls in the middle of the plate and nearly every Pirates hitter was teeing off against him. Nearly every ball hit was a sharp line drive. They just happened to be at many of our defenders. Woodford was extremely lucky and needed to come out. He did earn a few strikeouts, but it’s the Pirates.

On the other hand, Oviedo looks really good. Lots of pitches right on the black or in the corners. He was slightly wild, but not nearly as much as we remember. He’s wearing down a little now and the Pirates should have had a short leash on him this inning like Ollie did with Woodford.

How long before O’Neil gets a seat on the bench? He’s been really bad at the plate too.

Contreras has quite a streak of his own going at the plate.

…and I just cannot understand O’Neill at all. Thought he would jump on that 1-1. Perfect pitch to drive to right.

Then on the 1-2 I said “You know he is going to throw it down and away, so lay off this if it is below the belt”. Well it was down and O’Neill flailed away. Just a horrible approach. Like my dad used to tell me all the time, “You gotta think!”

I agree on O’Neill ZTR. He always seems like he’s guessing at every pitch before it’s thrown and decides beforehand if he wants to swing. He does go on little streaks where his guessing is good. It seems to me in those times he does one of two things- hammer the first pitch or become extremely patient and hunt a sloppy pitch that doesn’t break. But that hasn’t been the case this year.

With a 1 run lead in the 7th, I’m looking for Hicks to get the baseball…

After that SB and 1st base open, I thought they’d go to Hicks…

I agree some with jnevel, and disagree some. Oviedo has been better than Woody, but not much. He did keep the ball closer to the zone on pitches that were not strikes. And Woody was helped with the throw home.

But Woody had good stuff. Quite a few ground ball outs and some pitches in the zone that the Pirates could not turn around. The big thing is, he limited the walks – only had one if I am recalling correctly.
