1:15 p.m.
LHP Zack Thompson (3-5, 3.92) vs. RHP Johan Oviedo (8-13, 4.20)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest Extra)RHP Adam Wainwright (3-10, 8.10) was previously scheduled starter, but is being moved to the Atlanta series.
September 2, 2023 at 7:55 am #232961Marmol says Wainwright will not be making his start vs the Pirates, and will next pitch during the Braves series.

ParticipantWe’re 3 up and 8 down vs PIT this season. That says plenty.
September 2, 2023 at 12:42 pm #232985I know it’s all so sweet, getting Wainwright a start in Atlanta. But he has no chance against the Braves in Atlanta. There’s at least a chance against Pittsburgh in this one.
Here’s to hoping they change their minds – quickly!
September 2, 2023 at 1:08 pm #232986Maybe its about over and he just wants to pitch in Atlanta since he started with the Braves org.
September 2, 2023 at 2:17 pm #232990He also avoids a start in Cincy, where he has been hammered. This feels like letting him bow out as gracefully as possible.
September 2, 2023 at 2:51 pm #232994Being from Georgia he will probably have a lot of friends and family in Atlanta to see him pitch one last time. It appears we are going to finish in last place regardless of how many more starts Waino gets so we might as well let him go out how he wants.
September 2, 2023 at 8:38 pm #233028FYI here, in case anyone is interested.
Reds just beat the Cubs 2-1 with two runs in the last of the 9th on Saturday night. The Cubs got hosed. Bader stole 3rd but when he got up he was off the bag and he got tagged. It was clearly obvious! But the umps ruled him safe on the challenge.
It was as obvious as could be to me. Bader sure went brain dead on that one.

Wrong thread.
September 2, 2023 at 9:49 pm #233042Now back at 20 under and I fully expect this team to surpass the utter futility of the worst Cardinal team of my lifetime in form of the Vern Rapp led ’78 team that finished 24 games under. There’s no question in my mind that posterity will define the current Redbird manager as clearly way worse than the much maligned Rapp.
September 3, 2023 at 8:07 am #233062Yeah at a full 5 behind Pittsburg – last place it is.
But, to be fair, the Cardinals are no longer worried about wins and losses this year. They are evaluating the players they have to help with the off season plan.
As a bonus to Mo and Marmol, the worse the 2023 record turns out the more chest pounding they can do when they talk about the ‘X’ game improvement they show in 2024. Even if they only manage to get back to .500 next year that would be a ’20 game improvement’.
See how it works?
September 3, 2023 at 8:36 am #233063I understand what you’re driving at and it would be easy to draw that conclusion if St. Louis were spelled Cincinnati or Pittsburgh, but I don’t think that type of short con strategy will work in this corner of the baseball world. Obviously the W/L record no longer matters this season, but it will for the first 25 to 30 games of ’24 and it’s my belief that if ’24 gets off to an even slightly bad start we can expect to something similar to a Stalin type purge.
September 3, 2023 at 8:48 am #233064Baseball speaking, thanks to our team’s miserable campaign, I find myself mired in uncharted waters. What kind of fan is indifferent to if the team that they have loved for over 50 years wins or loses? Actually, my thoughts have gone so haywire and out of control that I’m shaded more towards hoping our Cards lose. Instead of scoreboard watching how our divisional rivals are faring, I’m now checking out how lower rung clubs such as the White Sox are doing, in hopes that they win so that our Cards can move up just one little spot in next year’s draft. I have to go way back to pre-Aaron Rodgers-Brett Favre days for the last time I have rooted for my favorite professional sports team to lose so to improve their position in the draft. I feel like a loser…….hope I’m never put in this position again.
September 3, 2023 at 9:29 am #233066I’m worse than you Pugsley. 58 years listening watching following the team. I moved to StLouis so I could go to Cardinals games. And right now I just don’t care. Went to bed after the 7th last night with a one run lead. That’s never happened. Hope to get regenerated next year. But if thwe don’t fore oily, which it sounds like they aren’t, I will start with a bad attitude.
September 3, 2023 at 10:57 am #233067I am 74 yrs old and have been following them since 1955 and will watch/listen regardless of record.
September 3, 2023 at 11:08 am #233068Sounds like we’re two peas in a pod, KCB. Though you’ve made an unbelievably loyal gesture towards our Birds by pulling up stakes and making the long haul to be in their midst, while I trekked off to Phoenix to cozy up to roadrunners and rattlers for 15 years, only coming into contact with St. Louis on Hwy. 70, on my way back home to America’s Dairyland to settle down. Mega kudos to you, KCB!
And to you GameCard…….. you’re only a Tommy Edman trade away from switching allegiance. You could very well be a Phillies fan come spring training.

September 3, 2023 at 11:53 am #233072Is everybody on this Forum in agreement that Goldschmidt should be hitting 3rd?
September 3, 2023 at 12:13 pm #233073Yes I think Goldy should hit third but it is just one of many items that have gone wrong this year. It is a long list.
This has been such a strange year. I admit it is difficult to keep your interest up during such a fiasco of a season. It even makes coming to this message board more of a chore than it should be. I will always be a fan but this has been beyond frustrating. Here is to hoping that the powers that be are so embarrassed by this debacle that they will be extremely determined to make the necessary changes/additions over the winter. If they want to sell some season tickets they will do so.
September 3, 2023 at 12:37 pm #233079
jj-cf-stlParticipantSure 3rd, why not, he can ground out there to end the game just as easily.
Hes an mvp, it shouldn’t matter where he’s at in the lineup.
September 3, 2023 at 12:42 pm #233080I continue to watch simply because it’s baseball and the game itself supercedes the St. Louis, Cardinals who by happenstance turned out to be my favorite baseball team since when I was still a young boy. I’ve touched on this before, but there continues to be plenty of competitve and exciting Big League baseball outside of the city of St. Louis. Furthermore, there’s a final month’s worth of action involving contending teams fighting tooth and nail for a play-off berth and it won’t be too long before post-season action begins and Big League post-season baseball never fails to provide me with plenty of exciting entertainment whether or not my favorite team participates, so I’ll be following along closely. The Cardinals will always be my favorite team of any professional team sport, but in my view, the game of baseball itself entirely eclipses the St. Louis, Cardinals. Besides…I hate winter!
September 3, 2023 at 1:32 pm #233081Goldy should be 3 in my estimation. Hes probably 2 by sabermetrics. I would wager the players are entered in a Unuvac 3000 computer abd it spits out the lineup. Since our season us undone I suggest going to the lottery method. Put the names in a hat and throw it up in the air. Pick em up blindfolded and you got your lineup! Seriously I would start my lineup with 2 guys in a row who can get consecutive hits. A major accomplishment this year.
September 3, 2023 at 1:35 pm #233082Bases loaded no outs. Arenado, Burleson and Walker nothing to show for.
September 3, 2023 at 1:35 pm #233083That was a bit of a disappointing first inning.
