When the starter doesn’t go deep things get messy.
September 2, 2023 at 9:07 pm #233037Rung him up.
September 2, 2023 at 9:12 pm #233038Well, looks like we’re going to have to wait another day for that September surge.
September 2, 2023 at 9:17 pm #233039Rom looked ok. First start really bad, second start pretty good, third start …. kinda meh but not horrible. Still, don’t see him on the staff for 2024.
3-9 against the Pirates. They have crushed us this season and we are what? 5 full games behind them now for 4th?
I’m glad Winn is getting a ton of at bats now so he knows what to work on in the off season. At this point not too worried about him winning ROY in 2024 but maybe something will click for him.
Gorman…. needs help.
Mo most must be looking at the list of holes he needs to fill for 2024 and just shaking his head.
September 2, 2023 at 9:26 pm #233040Even though the Pirates faded fast after about 60 games into the season, they have to be happy that they’re a much improved ballclub. They obviously field a much better team than do the Cardinals. Let’s just hope they don’t begin slap the Redbirds around for a decade like they did back in the 70’s when they had guys named Parker, Madlock, Stargell and Oliver.
September 2, 2023 at 9:31 pm #233041These post-game pressers are better than the games. I recall when they were referred to as “Tony TV.” Now they call it “Circus Clown Commentary”…I’ve yet to hear mention of the much anticipated September surge…
September 2, 2023 at 9:51 pm #233043If it takes you 7 pitchers to get through 9 innings, it normally means you don’t really have any pitchers. But when you’re 20 games under and almost 20 games back, going through 7 pitchers might mean the manager has lost his mind.
September 2, 2023 at 9:55 pm #233044That may well be the case…I’ve actually noticed that many of his facial expressions and mannerisms are in line with those of Harpo Marx. And I’m not kidding.

Oli didn’t say September 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd. He just said “September.” I don’t think the heavy stuff is gonna come down for quite a while.
Come to think of it, Oli didn’t say 2023 either.
September 3, 2023 at 12:34 am #233046Isn’t it about time to end the Verhagen/Barnes experiment? They are horrible, and cost us the game today. Unless we want to tank….
September 3, 2023 at 12:36 am #233047And bringing in Verhagen to close the game seemed insane. I’d rather have brought Brad Thompson out of retirement. Marmol is the worst manager in our history.
September 3, 2023 at 6:47 am #233052I don’t think that Oliie’s marching orders are presently to win each game at all costs. One of the things he might be tasked with is to give the FO a last good look at pitchers who will be arb eligible this winter. Verhagen has one more year of control. It will cost 3rd year arb money as well as a slot on the active roster all year, so a decision will have to be made. They just got a look at him in a leverage situation.
September 3, 2023 at 7:56 am #233060For sure Bling – all the ‘I can tell you that’ September surge jokes aside – the team is absolutely going to put the guys they have into some situations to see what happens.
The rest of 2023 is essentially a tryout for 2024 for a chunk of the roster. No, it’s not particularly fun to watch but it does serve a purpose.
The Cardinals are usually on the other side of the equation – struggling along near .500 and then padding the win total the last 6 weeks against teams that have thrown in the towel.
After last season winning the division in his first year at the helm I’m sure this will humble ‘Starch’ Marmol to some extent. He needs an old hand grey haired bench coach for a couple seasons to help him with certain decisions though.
September 3, 2023 at 12:26 pm #233077VerHagen is a free agent after this season. If he is on the 2024 roster we have big problems.
