Quite a few names in this Oakland starting lineup that I’m not overly familiar with …..to say the least. I’d hate to see the names of their bench players……. they’d sound about as familiar as the Nagasaki Wood Hens players to me.
So it’s about WHO is in the 3spot, instead of “lets move Goldy there to help his rbi total.”
I have said this before, but I think you should put your best overall hitter at three – a guy that has power and gets on base. The reason being he is coming up after your 1 & 2 guys, presumably your best two OBP guys not counting the 3 hitter.
At two, you are coming up after 9 and 1. I don’t care for my best hitter at two because he is not likely to have runners on base as often as the 3 guy.
He will get more ABs over the course of the season, so that is the counter. Still I bat my big guy at 3, next best OBP guys at 1 and 2, and a power guy at 4 – ideally that is. If you have the hitters available to work the lineup as such.
Thus I like Arenado at three as he has been our best hitter this year. Goldy was good early and should have been at 3 then, IMHO. But he has regressed and while I still like him better at 3 than 2, he is not the hitter he was in ‘22.
Sears looks like a clean-cut young man ……not quite to the degree of an Orel Hershiser, but then besides a young Ronny Howard, who does?

Very uncharacteristically 2 free passes in one inning yielded by Mr. Sears…… let’s get him. Two outs with Goldy and Contreras occupying 1st and 2nd bases respectively.
This Sears is a real craftsman on the mound. He has the tools to build some nice stats, with a veritable department store full of impressive pitches.

Soderstrom makes me think back to Eric Soderholm? Anyone remember that guy? Played for the White Sox in the ‘80s maybe – possibly back to the ‘70s?
With Thompson moving into the rotation, I guess Woodford will come up and be ready to follow Wainwright. He is on rehab assignmen now.

The bespectacled Eric Soderholm…..yes indeed BicycleMike. The guy had some pop in his bat on occasion.
Woody is coming, Blingster. With Matz going down, Waino is pretty much guaranteed getting his 200 now……. no matter how bad he continues to pitch.
The A’s fail to apply the tag on Walker at 2nd, who was out from me to you….. forcing John Patrick to come back out of the dugout after the review. Then Edman dumps a wounded duck into short right to score Walker and it’s 1-0 Good Guys.
Where’s Rat when you need him? We’re pretty much due a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard aren’t we?
This Nick Allen of Oakland looks nothing like our Dick Allen from yesteryear. I bet Nick doesn’t hit like Dick either. Though Dick did finish his career in Oakland in 1977, when Nick’s parents may not have even been born yet, let alone Nick.
Now Contreras is coming up gimpy after advancing to 2nd base on a deep fly to right……and the hits keep a coming in this most tumultuous 2023 campaign.
Fortunately, Contreras appears ok, but I’m not so sure until I see him run again. He may have fooled the Cardinals trainer into thinking he’s good to go, but not Pugs here. Let’s hope we see him sprinting across home plate any minute here with a wide smile half the size of Texas across his mug.
Contreras gets doubled off 2nd base and we venture along to the 4th in quite the pitchers duel……1-0 Cards.
And Contreras is leaving this ballgame as Knizner is lacing up his gear.
You have to wonder if this Lawrence Butler fellow of Oakland is related in any fashion to the Braves center fielder from the 90’s, Brett Morgan Butler?
Ruiz tattoos a 2 run shot off Mikolas to left and just like that the A’s have seized a 2-1 advantage, which in a pitchers duel such as this is Hugh with a capital “H”……shoot!
Edman leads off the Redbird 5th with an infield single to get the ball rolling in a positive direction for the home team. John Patrick is now at 80 pitches, so he’s long for not. I’ll be glad to get him out of this ballgame as our few hits off this guy have either been of the infield variety or wounded ducks……oh my oh my……just as those words are spoken, Goldy throttles home run #19 to left and the Cards recapture the lead 3-2.
