Since picking up his 198th career win, Wainwright has an astronomical 15.55 ERA in seven starts.
This simply cannot be allowed to continue.

ParticipantWaino says he wants to finish strong. He should have realized that last year and retired then. Even though he struggled over his last several starts last year, his season numbers weren’t horrible being his age. This year he just looks like an old broken down player trying to hang on even if there isn’t anything to hang onto. This is why I admire guys who retire instead of chase numbers when they know they have lost it. If you look at statistics,a lot of guys were relatively close to certain benchmarks but made the smart decision to get out with some dignity instead of trying to get those. I think in the short term playing this season is going to hurt him far as national press and any other considerations. Twenty years from now unless you were a cardinal fan, it probably won’t matter and those who are, are going to honor him anyway.

Does anyone know what the September roster expansion rules are now, and any idea what that might look like?
Yes. The increase is tiny, from 26 to just 28. That is it. The two names initially brought up will depend on who is up and who is active already when 9/1 hits. And it could change the next day.
For example, had you asked me yesterday, I would have said Baker should be one. But today, he is up. So I would say Carlson today, if he is healthy by September. Or it could be Herrera again.
But the old days of expansion being a big impact to the roster in September are gone forever. It is now as much or more about shuffling through fresh bodies than it is giving prospects a chance.
August 12, 2023 at 3:17 pm #231309Regarding Waino, the comments I read from Marmol seem to suggest they want Waino to make the decision to pull himself out of the rotation. I get that they want to respect him. The problem is that Adam is not the kind to ever admit defeat, no matter how bad it really is. One can only hope he will come to the realization that his personal quest for 200 is hurting the team.
Despite some fans saying that team wins don’t matter at this point, NONE of the players fighting each night would EVER say that. None of them. They have professional pride that some don’t seem to appreciate. Losing hurts them more than it does us; I can assure you of that.
August 12, 2023 at 6:04 pm #231330Brian you are right. It has to be tough for all of them as respected a player as Wainwright is.
He absolutely should shut himself down.
August 14, 2023 at 7:35 am #231446That should be Thursday. Oh, and it is at home against the Mets. Get your tickets at cardinals.com!!!!
Adam Wainwright will make his next start, manager Oli Marmol tells KMOX. #stlcards
