(and Bally Sports Southeast/Southwest Extra)Heading into this series there are 49 games left. That’s 30% of the season, so 1/3 basically. That is a long way to go having thrown in the towel. Unfamiliar territory for us, so I don’t know what to expect performance wise.
I don’t think anyone could argue that the team has shown any kind of resiliency or cohesion. We are 15 games under and just sort of slowly settling lower in the water. When the pitching is good, the offense fails, and vice versa. We don’t tend to win the close ones. We have our chances, but people don’t tend to step up. There is no sense of everyone pulling on the same end of the rope. I have no sense that there has been effective clubhouse leadership, or managerial leadership. Its not just that players have been bad, the whole thing has not worked. Those are all things that are worrying for next year. How do you fix that kind of stuff? Big turn arounds happen from one year to the next though, so it can be done.
2022 to 2023 is a first to worst season. Which is a lot easier to do than going the other way but the NL Central is and has been pretty weak for years now. Last year’s team was heavily flawed and won almost by default.
The balanced schedule hasn’t been kind to the Cards either as we play our division mates what? 13 times instead of 19 times each?
The Cubs seem about on track or maybe even a year ahead with their rebuild.
Yeah, 2024 is a huge question mark for the Cardinals as they will have to rebuild almost their entire pitching staff – in one off season.
It’s likely they will be better in 2024 but will it be enough to win the division or even snag a WC spot?
I wouldn’t characterize the Cubbies as in the midst of a rebuild this season. They’re only 1.5 games off the pace in the NLC and just won a 3 game series against the team with the best W/L record in either league. They’ve also won series against other good teams this season including the Rangers, Orioles and Giants. And despite some early season troubles, they’ve not only absolutely decimated the two weak teams in the NLC in the form of the Cardinals and Pirates, they’ve also played well against both the Brewers and Reds. It won’t surprise me if they end the season atop the NLC.
I’ve been saying the same thing since June May.
When the kind of talent we have fails over the long term, the problem is leadership.
Pure and simple.
I don’t think there’s any question at all that what could be termed effective leadership in this entire organization is nonexistent. In my view, the majority of players on this roster not only don’t take the manager seriously, but also don’t afford him a shred of respect. Why would they? Moreover, I think they view Johnny as a genuine weasel, which he is, and that he not only can no longer be entrusted to build a competitve roster, but would also sacrifice his grandma if it meant saving his own neck. As for what’s termed the Cardinal GM, I think he’s taken in a context of total disregard. I also think that word has begun to spread around the entire league amongst players, managers and coaches, that StL. has become a place to avoid. I really do.
Boy how things have changed so quickly. If Mozeliak had been more prudent and acquired a #2/3 SP and a #4/5 SP over the winter this might be a different conversation and the team would be in the middle of the play-off hunt. I apologize for using the word “IF” because all of the “IFs” are sounding like elevator music. He didn’t and the house of cards has fallen down.
StL. has become a place to avoid.
I don’t know about that because any pitcher with a decent arm will find plenty of opportunity on this team.

Seriously…. Marmol needs to go. He’s a AAAA manager…. and this team sorely needs a leader at the helm.
Well we’re playing the Rays now. I live in Fla and get all the Rays games on cable
So I get to see my Cardinals play this whole series. Its incredibly hot outside right now but they get to play in an air conditioned stadium. Originally they doubted that stadium would sell seats. The ac was for drawing the local St Pete retired folks. Now it actually worked and is probably the best thing about it. The next one will be either enclosed or a sliding roof like Miami has. It appears to be disorienting to outfielders with the cieling rafters. Last time we played there it was awful. Slow torture. The death of a thousand cuts. We’re worse now but I hope we win a few. Gonna be a long 30 games left. Personally I’d prefer focus on some pitchers improving their skills or next season getting left behind.Also wondering how good our pitching development really is? Personally believe we need a skipper that has actually played Major League Ball. I have read Mozelink is gonna be gone 2025 to be replaced by out scouting director Flores? Don’t know if thats for real but things do change with time.I’m convinced that the Schildt fiasco coupled up with the torching of a player during a post-game presser and the random finger pointing of blame directed at a recently acquired FA for this team’s failure has led to talk amongst the fraternity of established players, managers and coaches around the league of the nature that it may be in their best interest to avoid potential trouble by subjecting themselves to the sort of nonsense that seems to be more than somewhat commonplace.
Teams are off Mondays, so there is no information flow. We will see if Winn is put on the 7-day IL today.

SS Tommy Edman SDin din today was the monthly trip to the Snitzlebank, the German restaurant down in Jasper. A ground sirloin, German fries, green beans, and a Coke were on the menu today. Later tonight some bar-b-q wings and a couple of yeast donuts with the glazed icing. Yum yum.
Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch for this one. A couple of 7×50 Palma Real cigars will be had during this game. Then later tonight the Dodgers and DBacks from Arizona or the Giants and Angels from Anaheim. Last night the Giants trailed 3-2 heading to the 9th but plated six (6) runs in the 9th to come away with the 8-3 win. The Angels have lost seven (7) straight.

Eflin has reverse splits, as a rhp he is toughest on lhb’s (43 ops+) and allows a 95 ops+ to rhb’s this season.
The lineup construction for tonights game doesn’t reflect Eflin’s splits. It’s the cookie cutter order vs any rhp.
I wonder if Mo is seriously considering going with O’Neill in LF next year or if its just positioning him to enhance trade value. This is his 6th year in the bigs and he has had one good year, so I guess it could happen again. Maybe Mo is hoping for that. He likes to go with hope.
Left fielder Tyler O’Neill was scratched from the #STLCards lineup with left knee tightness. He took BP and tracked fly balls earlier in the night, but was scratched.
O’Neill is listed as day-to-day.

You mean top of the rotation starters don’t you? Lol
We all knew last offseason what they were willing to spend and how they wanted to spend it.
After recent comments from Joe Kelly it appears that some FA just don’t see this as a destination due to OUR WAY of doing things. Some don’t care because they’re getting paid. See Cecil and Fowler.
We’re already hearing rumblings from bowtie that 24 might be a retooling year. So if your expecting #1 or 2 starter you’re dreaming. Plenty of 4-5 starters on the market to be had on 1-2 year deals.
