Every MLB team passed on Adolis Garcia AFTER he left St. Louis. In 2021, the Rangers outrighted him and no one claimed him. He stuck around and earned his keep in Texas.

That’s interesting, Bikemike. I’ll have to look that up sometime. And yeah, I forgot to mention the Steelers who were perennial losers at the time of the merger. I remember thinking at the time that they threw them in with the Colts and Browns simply for good measure.

I think teams probably looked at the numbers when evaluating Garcia and saw a lot of strikeouts and felt he was nothing special. They did not look at his physical makeup.

The Cardinals should have known first hand what he could do and his strength and athletic ability.

So you are saying Mo whiffed on him twice.

Well, Garcia certainly hadn’t done anything in the interim to change the earlier first-hand reports they had on him, hence his removal from the Rangers’ 40-man. Agreed that the Cards should have known him best, or second best, when he became available, but teams rarely admit mistakes and really, there seemed no reason to re-evaluate at that point. In this case, that prior knowledge worked against them.

Giving up on Garcia is one thing but giving him away for nothing (cash considerations) is what really grinds my gears.

That was just a massive misevaluation. It was probably Marmol’s fault.

Along the lines of bad transactions, I see that Zac Gallen is starting tomorrow for the National Leaguers.

Man, Alcantara is the reigning CY winner and now Gallen is starting the All-Star game. Reminds me of the 1970s when Steve Carlton, Jerry Reuss and Mike Torres were three of the best pitchers in the game, all toiling for teams other than the one they came up with.

On paper I like the NL lineup better but we never seem to win it anymore. When I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s the NL won every year. Those days are long gone.

Sheesh, Arozarena at 3, Garcia at 6, Gallen starting. Randy goes to the finals in the derby. We do have Arenado starting, but not exactly a good report card on Cardinal management.

Best I can tell, Arenado’s the solitary Cardinal on this season’s NL AS roster. For some odd reason it made me think of the ’79 edition which had no less than four Redbirds chosen for the NL AS roster. They were future HOF’ers Lou Brock and Ted Simmons, along with Keith Hernandez and Gary Templeton, the latter of which refused to participate. From my understanding, the phrase “If I ain’t startin’… I ain’t departin'” is falsely attributed to Templeton and was coined instead by Cardinal announcer, Jack Buck. Another player who was chosen to be placed on that ’79 NL AS roster eventually turned out to be one of my favorite Redbirds…”Walking Underwear,” was on that ’79 NL AS roster, but he was chosen that season as an Astro and hadn’t been traded to the Redbirds until a bit in to the ’81 strike shortened, “split season.”

The Marlins whiffed on Gallen, too. After having him a year and half, they flipped him to Arizona for Jazz Chisholm, who is an MLB-average player with career numbers comparable to Dylan Carlson. I bet they’d like that one back.

Hmm…I also just now happened to notice that Darrell Porter was chosen as a Royal for the ’79 AL AS roster. Funny how he happened to be the receiving end of a battery that included “Walking Underwear” for the first pitch of the deciding Game 7 of the ’82 WS. And most everyone knows he was also the receiving end of the battery that included Bruce Sutter for the swinging K of Gorman Thomas for the final out of that WS. I tip my hat to Big League baseball and say, “Thanks for the memories!”

Interesting on the “If I ain’t startin’, I ain’t departin’ “ phrase. I always thought Templeton coined it.

I am around the same age as Garry, and when he would do that I always thought he would someday regret not participating. He could have told his grandkids about being in the all-star game, and who knows maybe he would have had a game winning hit.

As for Joaquin, there are several versions of his name. The one I recall that an opposing player said one time was “Ice Cream Candy Bar.” 🙂

And thinking about Mr. Candy Bar, we got him for Tony Scott. That is the kind of deal we need Mo to pull off – get a good starter, even if he is sort of temperamental, for a fourth outfielder type,

Haha!…Thanks for reminding me of the ice cream nickname, Bikemike! I’m sure Joaquin must have loved that one…Flaherty’s pretty temperamental at times, but in my view is nowhere near the competitor that Andujar once was, as he fully put on display by not only being the winning pitcher of decision in a WS 7th game, but also by being a 20 game winner in consecutive seasons for the Cardinals. But what made Andujar so special was that in the days before the DH, he was also a power hitter who stood in and took the sorts of violent rips at the plate that would instill genuine envy in both Stan and Albert…I’ll never forget how Jack Buck would entirely lose his composure during KMOX radio pre and post game interviews with the Redbird pitcher when at the tail end of the interview Andujar would always make a point to say, “And as you know, Jack, I’m also a power heater”…At which point Buck would instantly crack up with uncontrollable laughter and then tell the listening audience, “And there you have it folks…He’s one tough Dominican!”…Haha!

I remember an incident when part of an old brick building downtown, I think maybe the Welch Baby Carriage building, collapsed on to a highway or highway ramp, and one of the drivers involved in the incident was Andujar. Does anybody else remember that?

This is a news report of the incident but does not mention Andujar

On August 5,1983, an exterior wall from the building’s west wing collapsed onto nearby Interstate 55 during a severe thunderstorm. The falling debris struck a nearby car that had pulled over to wait out the storm. The accident killed Jean Morrissey, a 22-year-old woman from Alton, Illinois. The driver and a second passenger also sustained injuries. The accident made the national news, gaining coverage in the New York Times.

edit to the above. IIRC, his car did not get damaged, or not seriously, but it was a close call, and he got hung up in the jam and blocked roadway.

Here is an Andujar story from his Wiki page, concerning events in Game 7 of the 1985 WS, the game following the Denkinger game.

The score was 10–0 by the time Herzog brought Andújar in for mop-up duty.[23] When umpire Don Denkinger called a ball, Andújar emphatically showed his disagreement and had to be restrained by teammates. Herzog was furious and was ejected. A pitch later, Andújar was ejected for arguing another pitch which was clearly off the plate. Andujar charged Denkinger, bumping the umpire before being restrained by teammates.

Herzog’s decision to send in Andújar—normally a starter—led to speculation that his decision was payback for Denkinger’s infamous call in Game 6, but Herzog had stated that Andújar was the only Cardinal pitcher that still had any life left in his arm,[24] as the Cardinals had gone through seven pitchers in the game.

Andújar was so furious after being ejected from Game 7 that he demolished a toilet and sink in the visitor’s clubhouse bathroom in Royals Stadium with a bat.

I’m more than reasonably certain that you watched that entire 7th game, Bling. Whitey, without any question, placed the baseball into his hands for the express purpose so as to apply heat to a HPU who had clearly squeezed John Tudor on a least a half dozen offerings that led to 4 BB’s in the first 2 innings of play in that game. I thought that those two innings of horrendous ball/strike calls had way more of an impact on the outcome of that WS than did the 9th inning safe call the night before. Those 4 BB’s led directly to the 5 KC ER’s that effectively ended that WS. That call at 1B in the prior night’s game was relatively harmless and that baserunner would only have tied the game if the Cardinals wouldn’t have subsequently entirely imploded on defense. A good case could be made that they deserved to lose that one. I held nothing other than confidence prior to game 7, but in my view, the HPU had way more of an impact behind HP in game 7 than he ever had situated around 1B in game 6. At any rate, I’ll always adhere to the old axiom that proclaims that you can’t blame it on the umps…Haha!

No, I don’t recall that, Bling, but I would think that if several long tons of reinforced concrete had fell on his car it would have been mentioned in the article and he may have missed a turn or two.

Gallen gets Siemien on a grounder to Arenado. A look at what might have been.

Then he Ks Ohtani. Here’s Randy…he gets the first hit in the game, a single to left. He then gets gunned down attempting to steal on a great throw by Murphy.

I’d say this is odd and peculiar…This game’s being broadcast on Fox. Best I can tell, at present, Fox will not be broadcasting to any affiliate in the Stl. city or Stl. Co. area to be legally relayed or transmitted to a potential veiwing audience. I hope I’m wrong on this, only for the reason being that you’re always afforded only what they want you to see…I’m thinking about moving to Luxembourg City where the people remain civilized and still seem to eat well…
