Why? Why>
April 9, 2023 at 3:49 pm #216078It was not only a lousy move, but it also insults your everyday player. Donovan does just fine vs. lefties.
April 9, 2023 at 3:54 pm #216079Why Motter? Is Carlson hurt?
April 9, 2023 at 4:01 pm #216080Well, this game turned out to be as disappointing as a hollow chocolate bunny. At any rate, I’m ready for some baked ham and scalloped taters…Happy Easter!
April 9, 2023 at 4:03 pm #216081Yeah, yeah, I know the song. IT’S EARLY YET!
April 9, 2023 at 4:07 pm #216082There was no aspect of that game that wasn’t retched.
April 9, 2023 at 4:08 pm #216083The bad news is that the Cardinals are playing some really stinky baseball right now – like fresh dirty diaper stinky.
The good news is that the team they play next – the Rockies – are one of the three teams playing even worse, lol
Maybe get the struggle bus turned around out west…..
April 9, 2023 at 4:10 pm #216084If this bad start turns into a bad season do we think a lot of it will be on Marmol?
April 9, 2023 at 4:13 pm #216085Six base hits and six walks, but only one run. That is a recipe for losing.
Also, same pitching pattern as last year, at least one reliever has a melt down. Should have pulled Pallante one batter sooner.
April 9, 2023 at 5:01 pm #216087Pinch hitting for Donovan, one of the more productive and clutch guys we’ve got, who hits lefties just fine, with a 4A guy who had a good spring, coming in cold off the bench, is insane. Plain and simple, its crazy, whether Donovan was ofer 4 right then or not. I am conflicted as to whether this was Marmol’s idea or a computer generated move. I can’t believe Marmol would such a bonehead, but I can’t believe the computer would be either.
April 9, 2023 at 5:20 pm #216088with a 4A guy
Speaking of 4A guys, how would you characterize Knizner? Up there with bases loaded and strikes out. Why not pinch-hit for him in that spot?
April 9, 2023 at 5:27 pm #216089What sort of indication is transmitted to a very good everyday ballplayer by his field manager when he’s called back from a PA in a key hitting situation for the purpose of inserting a PH’er in his place who is a player who by the very skin of his teeth was barely able to obtain a spot on the roster? If I answer my own question, BW will revoke my privelage of commenting on this web-site, so it’d be in my own best interest to allow everyone else to formulate their own conclusions…
April 9, 2023 at 5:28 pm #216090They pinch hit for him later and Contreras also struck out with the bases loaded. Nothing is working right now
April 9, 2023 at 5:34 pm #216091Over the winter and well into ST, I thought Knizner would be a sufficient #2 catcher. He’s well on his way to proving me way wrong.
April 9, 2023 at 5:54 pm #216092how would you characterize Knizner
He’s a backup catcher who can’t hit. Well suited to playing behind Yadi when Yadi seldom took a day off. Not suited for any larger role, which we saw last year. On the roster due to either front office malpractice or ownership cheapness, or both.
April 9, 2023 at 6:34 pm #216093Well at least the good news is there are 4 teams in MLB with a worse winning % than we have!
The bad news is they are the Tigers, Royals, A’s and Nationals! Not exactly a who’s who of contenders
Finally a I thought of something today! In one year we have gone from the best young defensive outfield in baseball to the worst young defensive outfield in baseball! Quite an accomplishment!April 9, 2023 at 7:03 pm #216095

Indeed. That is a startling observation. To weigh against it, we have Montgomery. We pretty much had to get him and pay the the price, but there is no reason not to contemplate how it is we found ourselves in that desperate situation. No reason except that contemplating reasons doesn’t offer a solution right now.
Having thought it over for 45 seconds, I think maybe going back to Carlson in CF and O’Neill in LF is the way to go. Then put Noot in RF and Walker DH. Just go with that day in and day out. Screw the rotating cast of characters. Put your best team on the field.
April 9, 2023 at 7:20 pm #216096Blingboy, I agree getting Montgomery was great! He is the only starter we have that I have any faith in at the moment! However we may not have him for long as we just spent 20 million a year on Mikolas which seems crazy at the moment and with Boras as an agent I don’t see him in St. Louis after this year! I love your outfield of O’Neill in left Carlson in Center Noot in right and Walker DH! Makes great sense and they is why I’m almost sure it won’t happen! Lol!
April 9, 2023 at 7:55 pm #216097I can’t believe Marmol would such a bonehead, but I can’t believe the computer would be either.
Motter career vs LHP .204/.281/.299/.580
Donovan career vs LHP .292/.432/.339/.771Some of the malicious code Shildt left in Mo’s computers is starting to kick in.
April 9, 2023 at 7:59 pm #216098Makes great sense and they is why I’m almost sure it won’t happen!
I don’t think it will happen either, so we will see what happens. I think they think offense first is the way to go. I don’t so much disagree with that, after all, we couldn’t defense our way past the Phillies. But I am thinking that the alignment I mentioned might be our best offense as well as our best defense. Probably there is a roster utilization optimizer algo that would prove me wrong.
April 9, 2023 at 8:28 pm #216100With O’neill, Carlson and Nootbar in the Outfield and Walker the DH…where does Gorman play? Would he be traded?
April 9, 2023 at 9:02 pm #216101Nate,
They better not – NOT – count on great things from Nudie Bar. He’s a career .239 hitter. Our outfield is littered with guys that supposedly have potential but yet seem to usually come up short. The only exception was O’Neill in 2021.
April 9, 2023 at 9:23 pm #216102The Tampa team’s now 9-0. The Braves in ’82 and Brewers in ’87 share the record for consecutive W’s to start a season at 13. Brewers missed the post-season in ’87 and the Braves barely held on in ’82 to win the NLW by 1 game over the Dodgers. In any case, the Rays at 9-0 ain’t too shabby. I’d sure trade places.
April 9, 2023 at 9:40 pm #216103where does Gorman play? Would he be traded?
I think the answer is yes. He was outplayed for the 2B gig by Donovan, and he will be outplayed for the DH gig by Walker no matter who actually plays better. So that leaves nothing but a bench role, and he would be more valuable as trade bait for a pitcher.
The other plausible scenario is Donovan gets traded instead. That would be the inferior choice IMO even though Gorman may ultimately have better power production. Donovan fills a valuable offensive role very well, is an excellent defender and far better second baseman, great positional versatility, and adequate speed. He is also working on increasing his power. Gorman may develop as a power forward hitter. He may cut down his strike outs enough to bat up in the order. He may cut down his platoon split. But that is all speculative. Donovan does what he does now.
April 9, 2023 at 9:57 pm #216104Someone brought up the possibility of the Redbird manager being placed in the soup line before season’s end if his team were continue to perform in a manner that would place them at around 10 games under at the break. I don’t know about that, but I will say that in my view, the fact that he managed his team to a NLC title last season no longer carries any weight. Moreover, once the ’22 regular season came to a close, he’s featured several instances of decisions and judgments that could very well be termed as lousy. I’d have to guess that if he continues down the path that leads to inane line-up construction, lack of observation while a pitcher struggles, and puzzling in game decisions which don’t even resemble something that could mildly be termed as nonsense, he might find himself managing a collection of players who have little or no confidence in his abilities to see to it that this roster is manipulated in a manner that places this team in a position to consistently play well and win ballgames. If that happens and this manager’s boss clearly sees that’s the case, he’s in trouble.
