Not really that close. Trailed the whole game. Pitching was pretty spotty. We only had 2 SO and gave up 12 hits. Don’t know how many walks. Will be better tomorrow. Day game I believe. Go Cardinals!
Didn’t get to watch today though I usually don’t watch the games when they play the hideous cubs. Our pitching has got to be better, that’s all I got to say.
Just checking in for my morning Redbird review. Only cheery note here is Pug’s relish/pickle remark, inadvertent or not. Otherwise it is a gloomy start to my day after overnight thunderstorms. I need a cuppa to raise my spirits.
Liberatore with a game score of 30. blek. As of now his pitching line looks horrible. 1.769 WHIP, 5.54 ERA, 1.25 K/BB. Like the little kids would say, we need a pitcher not a glass of water. The pen failed as well. 5 should be enough to win. I also note that Albert’s BA is nearing the Mendoza line.
It would be helpful to look at the career arc of Adam Wainwright as a comparable for young Libby. Now, it would be preposterous to suggest that he will become a Cardinal HOFer, potential MLB HOFer and multi time Cy Young candidate. But to me, the stuff looks similar and the resumes look similar to this point. I still expect Liberatore to be an innings eating, solid rotation member for many years. It may just take a few bumps along the way, just as it did for Waino.
Thus far this season it feels like the Cardinals are being much more proactive in shuffling through the pieces they have in order to try to find out what’s what earlier rather than later.
I think this will position them to know what pieces to go get prior to the deadline.
They seem to be willing to make changes faster than in the previous few years….
I think it is time for the Cardinals to cut bait with McFarland. He was good for us last year but just doesn’t have it this time.
And why oh why was Pujols starting against a RH again? This is really irking me.
And once again our starter can’t even go 4 innings.

I gueds it was only Liberaores third start so I’m not suprised. Kinda of a game by committe though. Witgren bails out Libby and Whitley bails out Witgren who got bailed out by Witgren the the night before. Lot of bailing going on in the pen lately. Will be an interesting weekend. Don’t see keeping Albert against rightys.Dickersob should do that. Albert maybe occasionaly late in the game for rbi’s.
Liberatore needs more seasoning in AAA. McFarland needs to go down to AAA and find himself. Whitley ditto. Get Woodford back up for spot starts and relief. Maybe Rondon as well.
They can’t keep throwing these guys out on the mound when all they do is give up runs..!!Ha….. you’re right, a lot of “bailing out” going on within our pitching ranks, Wooster. Even though Albert’s numbers vs righties are pretty abysmal, he looks pretty darn comfortable in the box vs them at times. Take last night vs Thompson. Albert had some pretty healthy hacks against him. In his first two at bats, he fouled off a few balls with authority, but he was getting around too quickly. I thought for sure that Albert was going to adjust and take Thompson deep. And I totally agree with Scotty and Lee about McFarland. I think it’s time to put him out to pasture.

I agree. Adam was not exactly a dominant starter in AAA either. Basically .500 with a rather lofty ERA. The difference is Adam had around 70 starts between AA and AAA and Liberatore has had about 25. Another year and a half worth of AAA starts would put them on a similar footing to break into MLB successfully.

I agree GS, but we’re not the lone ranger on this one.
Remember when Quality Start was a ho-hum stat? 10yrs ago mlb averaged 54% quality starts. Today it’s 32% across mlb for this season with us at 35%. So we get a QS every third game.
Starting pitching has become the new inefficiency that clubs COULD exploit.
