Bottom of 6. Nick Martinez starts this inning with 73 pitches under his belt.

    Pez grounds out to short.

Albert on 3-2 walks on one just a titch wide of the zone.

Yadi hits it with authority the other way, but it’ll only carry to the right field track where it’s hauled in….2 down.

Donovan walks…..and that will result in a meeting at the mound with the entire Padre infield and pitching coach….. Martinez receives a vote of confidence and he’ll remain in this ballgame.

Bader flies out to short left, where Profar had to run the 100 yard dash to track it down.

A couple of sweet din-dins today served up by Cardinal In France and Bling. You can’t go wrong with shrimp scampi and scallops and all of the fixings……and speaking of fixings, Giovanni Gallegos is fixing to flirt with some 7th inning difficulties as Azocar promptly spanks a leadoff base hit to right. Let’s pick matters up shall we?

    Profar strikes out swinging.

Machado ….holy moly it does take Gallegos a bit of time in between pitches…a guy could eat a corned beef sandwich on rye and maybe even a bite or two from an apple in the amount of time it takes Giovanni to throw his next pitch. Manny foul tips it into Yadi’s glove, but Yadi doesn’t hang onto the ball and now the umpiring crew will meet to discuss how they’re going to call this one. The umps ring Machado up…..I don’t know legally how they arrived at their decision, but the Cards will take it.

It appears Pallante may be next in line for a rotation spot. Surprised Rondon wasn’t kept around, and given a chance. The organization seems to have a bias against Rondon. I don’t understand why a 40 man roster has been underutilized IMO.

The announcers think the Pads got rooked on a call by the home plate ump. With two strikes and a man on first, the pitch was swung on and missed and the ball bounced off Yadis glove and rolled away. The runner went down to second. The call was a strike out and runner returns to first.

Now the thinking is the backswing nicked Yadi’s uni so it is interference. So two outs, man on first.

Bottom of 7. Steven Wilson the new SD pitcher.

Edman grounds out to Machado at 3rd base.

Gorman (2-2 with a walk today). Lofts a base hit to right, just in front of Azocar. The rookie is now 3-3 on the afternoon.

Goldy ….thar she blows!…..hit very deep to left…..Profar to the wall and it’s long gone……5-2 Good Guys.

Arenado flies out to center where Grisham and Azocar nearly bopped heads in the process of Azocar holding onto the ball.

Pez walks. Nooty will pinch run for Pez.

Albert walks, as Nooty gets a little base stealing practice in as he slides into 2nd base…..that won’t count as a steal, Noots.

Yadi lines it over short and into left center field….in comes Nooty…..with Yadi checking into 2nd base with a double…..6-2 Birds

The Gorman and Goldy show continues. They are quite the combo.

I have 2 feelings about Goldschmidt month of May.

    1) he is a clear cut player of the month

    2) As a team, I feel like we wasted some of his extraordinary batting. Our record is okay to good for the month, but should be better. If we could only get 3 or 4 batters on the same page.

Top of 8. Genesis (properly pronounced “Hen-a-sis”) “Cabby” Cabrera still pitching for St. Louis.

    Voit strikes out.

Cronenworth grounds it out to Goldy about 10 feet off the bag at 1st and he’ll underhand feed it to a streaking Genesis Cabrera at 1st base for the out.

Kim walks…..and that will do it for Cabby as they’re coming to get him.

    Sweet post Scotty!

Ryan Helsley your new Cardinal hurler.

Nola ….on the first pitch he fouls out to Yadi behind home plate.

Bottom of 8. Hill still on the hill for SD.

Bader flies out to Azocar near the line in right…..and Azocar at the last moment had to veer off course to catch it as the wind was playing tricks with both the ball and the Padre right fielder ….2 outs.

    Edman grounds out

    Dickerson strikes out swinging.

Top of 9. Ryan Helsley still the St. Louis main man.

Grisham strikes out swinging on a nasty slider….wow, Grisham had no chance whatsoever of conjoining his bat with that particular pitched baseball.

    Azocar walks.

Profar grounds it thru the hole between 1st & 2nd and out into right for a base hit … Azocar stopping at 2nd base.

Machado grounds it up the middle and out into center field for a base hit … Azocar will score with Profar checking in at 2nd and it’s suddenly a 6-3 Cardinal ballgame.

Hosmer grounds into a sweet little 4-6-3 twin killing and that’s your ballgame!

    Your very fine final:

    St. Louis Cardinals 6
    San Diego Padres 3

Nice win. Maybe the Chubs can help us out vs the Crew tonight.

I’ve ripped on Marmol repeatedly (and justifiably) but his handling of the pitchers today was exemplary. (Now watch, he’ll try and stretch Pallante out into a starter and ruin him. The guy was barely better than mediocre in Double-A last year as a starter with an ERA just under 4.00, so there is zero chance that he’s an MLB-quality starter without many, many more minor league outings — if ever.)

A very nice victory, and I kinda hope Goldy does NOT break the record for Redbird XBH in May. If he stays where he is he’ll be forever linked with Stan & Albert, and that’s waaay cooler.

We need to find some starter innings somewhere.
