Oliver…It’s not fair because a WC winner is afforded the said same advantage as a division winner in the first round. The braintrust at MLB could at least create the impression of an extra advantage for the 3rd seed division winner by having the WC vs. WC series as a 2 home/1 away or vice versa, and all 3 games for the division winner and WC winner at the division winner’s HF. It also ain’t fair because my favorite team is the 3rd seed division winner this year…Haha!
I understand but in this case such WC#1 has a better record than the Cards so I have no problem with it. and if the Cards were the first wildcard then why not have that advantage in the future if needed.
Oliver…Yeah, I’m just griping because it’s the Cardinals that are the 3rd seed this season…Haha! And good point about seasons in the future. It’s always nice to have multiple ways to sneak in there. Heck, before too long there may be four divisions in each league.
Tonight’s game thread baseball trivia questions may look difficult at first glance, but if our elite panel of experts focuses their attention on specific timelines and eras, they should be able to come up with either some good guesses, or perhaps even square up and place the barrel of the bat on the correct answer…
1. In the 2011 WS, Mike Napoli led all Texas Rangers with 10 RBI’s and it seemed as though Redbird pitching couldn’t get him out with runners aboard. In the 1982 WS, Gorman Thomas K’d facing Bruce Sutter for the final out of that WS. Thomas also led the AL with 39 HR’s that season. In their careers, Thomas hit 268 HR’s to Napoli’s 267 HR’s. Sandwiched right there with both of them on the career HR list is a former Cardinal who hit 267 career HR’s and played against one of them in one of the two aforementined WS. Who is that former Cardinal player?
2. I’m pretty sure that at $43M, Max Scherzer is the highest paid baseball player on planet earth this season. Back in 1996, this player became the first guy in baseball history to be paid $10M for a season of work. Who was that player? Hint; Money makes most people happy, but it seemed like the more money he made, the meaner he got…
1) going through the players I remember I don’t think it’s going to be someone from the 2011 team and I’m not familiar enough with 1982 to take a guess.
2) I don’t know if I would have come up with this name without your hint, but I think it’s got to be the nemesis of former Cardinal Fernando Vina, Albert Belle.

In addition to becoming baseball’s first $10M a year player in ’96, Albert “Joey” Belle was pretty good at both hitting a baseball and smashing up clubhouses and boom-boxes with his corked bat…Legend has it that the Cleveland Indians billed him an average of $10,000 a year for damages inflicted on both home and road clubhouses and dugouts, and in most baseball circles it was considered that he was in fact, nuts. At any rate, I remember him to be the most intimidating presence on a baseball field as I’ve ever seen before or since. He was a mean looking son of a gun!
The 82 team was speed not power. The only guys who ever hit homers were Hendrick and Porter. We still had a half share in season tickets back then.
Bling…WINNER! You aced question #1. George Hendrick hit 267 HR’s in his career. I was looking all the way down the line at the career HR’s list on baseball refrence the other day and was a little astounded to see Silent George’s name sandwiched right there between Napoli and Thomas who both played in a losing cause against the Redbirds in a 7 game WS, so I thought I’d throw that one in there. You sure hit it for a HR, Bling…Haha! That long list can be interesting. You get down to the guys who hit between 200 and 300 HR’s in their careers and there’s so many names who were really good ballplayers, but not everyday names, that I was reminded of seeing play through the years. Ain’t baseball fun?
Funny thing happened getting into game tonight. We decided to go to the hall of Fame instead of getting in line early figuring on not getting a waino bobblehead. Well we come out around 5:00 and it’s crazy packed even more so than pujols. Well we go down street and just lean up by wall waiting for the stadium to open up. Well line starts moving, we waited til end comes up and get in. Mind you we are still a long ways from gate which was number 5. I commented to my son how crazy it would be if we still got a bobblehead even though we had basically given that idea up and funny thing is, we still got one each.
1982willie…Cards667 aced the first question which was Albert Belle. Clemens could certainly be an intimidating and malicious presense while situated on the mound, but Belle impressed me as the type of guy who’d hit his mom if she burned his pancakes…Haha!
I had an advantage on that 1982 question since I attended 40 or more games that year. The only WS game I attended was game 1 when we got creamed. The only thing I specifically remember was Ted Simmons hit a homer off Bob Forsch. My mom and dad had our regular seats and I was in the bleachers, which were wooden benches, game day first come, first serve seating. I got a good look at Thomas in the outfield.
Lineup looks good tonight, at least top five. I consider yepez to be a hindrance but oh well
I think this is the lineup I’d roll out for all 3 home games and let Flaherty, Montgomery, Wainwright work as normal.
Then in Pittsburgh I’d treat them like spring training games and go with Mikolas and Quintana 3 innings each in the first game. Woodford and Matz in the 2nd game. And tell Hudson I need as many innings as he can possibly give in game 162. Get the regulars AB’s in all the games, but pull them after 2 AB’s and get everyone in there and stay pretty fresh. Then any of the main 4 starters would be ready to go in any of the 3 games and pen rested. But we’ll see what they decide to do.
If Hicks is healthy enough I could see Woodford start 161 and then be optioned to get Hicks activated and get him in 162 to see him in game action.Bling…Yeah, it didn’t look good during that ’82 WS opener. They were down in game 2 as well until a Porter 2 run double down the LF line. I can’t remember the exact total, but at the time I think they said he’d only had 1 or 2 base hits that entire ’82 regular season that were hit to that area of the field. Everything he put into play was normally pulled to the right side. I probably attended more games in ’85 than any other season, but went to quite a few during ’82 as well. I was in my 20’s and could still go to the games and party on a work night and make it to work the next day way back then…Haha!
It’s a tough call, but if I were forced to choose just one, I’d really have to say that the 1982 edition of the Cardinals has to be my favorite. They didn’t have anyone on that team who was a household name or a big star at the time. It was Ozzie’s first season as a Redbird and the most well known names were probably Sutter and Lonnie Smith who had already made his bones with a WS Championship with the 1980 Phillies. That was genuinely a team effort championship ballclub that wore opponents down with defense and speed. And if they held a slim lead in the 7th, Whitey simply handed the baseball to Bruce Sutter. Game over…
