Just tô show how box scores can be misleading — Stratton apparently got hit harder than Pallante but from the box score Stratton looks like he pitched way better.

Sanchez is the sort of pitcher that lulls you to sleep. When you look at his career W/L record of 113-118 and couple it up with a lifetime 4.07 ERA, you wonder to yourself how he’s hung around to pitch in the Big Leagues for 16 years. He must also have the ability to lull front office personel to sleep in the same manner that he displayed vs. Redbird hitters in today’s game.
Milwaukee comes back from an early 3-0 deficit and wins at Colorado. 6-4 Brewers your unhappy final. Only 7.5 games up now.
Very true CC about the box scores being misleading…. That is what I was referring to regarding Jack. 5 IP and giving up 1 run isn’t bad but just by watching him you could tell he didn’t have his top shelf stuff. Hopefully he gets it back before October.

Didn’t see much Pallante / Stratton because Pallante entered a little before I quit watching. Agree Flaherty was not sharp overall, so giving up just one run was a good result for him. He did flash some good stuff (movement and velo), so it looks like the bigger issue might be rust rather than the shoulder, and if so, that’s obviously a good thing.
Why can’t Flaherty be working this out in Memphis?
They still have games to play, right?
He’s been out most of two seasons for one thing or another hasn’t he?
Let’s step back and consider the big picture.
If Flaherty is healthy, which he is, he is not required to continue to rehab in the minors. He made five starts already between Double-A and Triple-A.
Since he has to be activated, do folks prefer Jack be moved to the pen? Or optioned to Memphis?
Bottom line, isn’t Flaherty better starting than Hudson? Maybe he deserves a second start to see how it goes?
Maybe better. But isn’t the issue whether he can be a better starting option than Quintana? How much need do we have for 5 regular starters now? If we are serious about challenging for #2 seed, we have to go with the best option every day. So give him another start and see if he’s got enough to be one of the 4 regulars. If not, this is not the time for him, or anybody, to be searching for their mojo on company time.
It was not Jack that cost us this game. It was an offense that was flat because they put every motion they had into sweeping the Cubs. Didn’t matter who was on the mound for us today because the offense did not play their part in a TEAM sport.
With that being said I think it is better for Flaherty to have his first game back against a Nationals team than against a stronger team so that he could build up his stamina and work on the mechanics. We applaud other pitchers when they go 5 innings and only give up a couple hits and a run so why can’t we be consistent and do the same for Jack!?
Anyone hoping to see the old Flaherty is dreaming. To continue a career with a bum shoulder, he has to relearn to pitch with mechanics that his shoulder can tolerate. I doubt he will be effective this season and we probably will not see a whole lot of him.
I was thinking last night the real question is will it be Q or Jack as the number 4 in the playoffs. I’m not worried about starting Jack over Hudson before the playoffs where the Cards have to use a 5th starter. I actually prefer Jack after seeing him last night, but don’t think it matters. I think the Cards have a snowball’s chance in hell of passing both the Braves and Mets regardless of how they play it.
Q just doesn’t seem to go beyond the 5th. But is that a big issue in October? Managers operate differently in October. Many pitchers who routinely go past 5 in the regular season get yanked early in the playoffs where each game is so important and there is little tolerance to see a guy work through a struggle. I think they are elated to get a solid 5 in most cases.
