Good morning all. The 20 game streak is coming along nicely. Luckily they don’t have 2 hour games any more so I should get home from work for the end of today’s thrashing of the Flubs. Oddly enough, Bader may end up deserving a bobble head day in recognition of his contribution to the team’s success.
We don’t want to count our cardinals before they are hatched, but if Libby has revived himself and if Jack is actually back in good form, we could head down the stretch flush with starters.
I always look forward to seeing Wainwright take his turn. The athletic talent and intense focus is plenty enjoyable enough, but what I find even better is the manner in which he’ll skillfully maneuver a hitter into check, and then mate him with that top shelf curve, or induce the hitter into a foolish guess before sneaking a fastball by him. When he’s at his most effective, I find myself laughing a lot as I watch him work his craft on bewildered Big League hitters. At any rate, he’s fun to watch as he’s working the genuine art of pitching.
Another thought on Wainwright…I really don’t think he’ll unlace them for good after this season. I genuinely believe that he returns in ’23 to end his career with well over 200 W’s. His career W/L pct. is a staggering .631…I did some checking around, and in a long line of all time great Big League pitchers, it’s extremely rare to find one that has recorded over 200 W’s to go along with a W/L pct. at or over 600 pct. who isn’t a HOF’er. Net bottom line is that if he ends his career with 200 W’s and a W/L pct. over 600, I feel he punches his ticket to Cooperstown.
Nice eloquently stated Waino posts, TD. I don’t think Waino has to worry about Cooperstown induction, for if he were to inadvertently step in front of a swift moving Wonder Bread truck on this very day, his Cooperstown ticket would already have been emphatically punched.
I would venture a guess that roughly 70% of twin bills end up being split. Let’s hope today falls into that 30% category. I had a clear vision coming into this series that Gorman was going to come up huge in this series. He should be out there today, so get ready for some bombs. Matter of fact, if I resided on Sheffield avenue , I would baton down the hatches and keep the young children inside when Gorman comes to bat in this series.Excuse me Pugs for not minding my own business, but I have a nit that simply must be picked: I think those folks on Sheffield Ave. probably should batten down their hatches, as in snugging up their tarps, rather than baton them as in Baton Rouge, or cheerleader twirling objects.
I hope Waino’s HOF prospects aren’t affected by modern day pitcher management practices which have changed the emphasis somewhat on W-L.
I think so too, Pugs. The days of 300 W’s for a pitcher may well be over and I certainly think Adam belongs in the HOF. 200 W’s is probably the new metric and when coupled up with a .631 W/L pct. I don’t know how anyone can possibly say he doesn’t belong. He’s simply such a smart pitcher. I can’t think of anyone in recent memory in whom I would place so much confidence that in the event of trouble, the ability to work their way out of it and escape unscathed. He’s solid all across the board, but his longsuit may very well be the extraordinary focus and composure between the ears.
Looks like the Redbirds face a 25 year old RHP that will make his Big League debut in today’s 1st game at Wrigley. Normally I feel bad for a young guy who’s finally getting his chance to pitch in the Big Leagues and is unmercifully pummeled, but not today.
Waino would be a pretty safe bet for the Hall if he hadn’t had such bad luck with the major injuries. Losing essentially two seasons hurt. Not only that, but Waino was notoriously slow in coming back from those off years as he took a year or so to readjust. It’s entirely possible that he’d be at 230 wins, 60 WAR if he’d remained healthy.
As is, he’s probably not making it to Cooperstown, which is a shame. But you never know…maybe he’ll get a bump when Albert and Yadi go in.

Alex Reyes was 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.454 WHIP when he got the call in 2016. So there’s that…
Hack Wilson purportedly had a “penchant for festivities” and his Cub’s manager, the legendary Joe McCarthy, seemed to be always trying to protect his great slugger from the pitfalls of drink. Legend has it that McCarthy once called Wilson into his office and asked him to sit down. He then produced a bottle of bourbon from his desk and proceeded to pour a portion of it into a tumbler glass at which time McCarthy produced a live worm and dropped it into the glass of whiskey. The worm quickly died and McCarthy looked at Wilson and solemnly said, “You see that Hack? Do you know what that means?” Wilson replied, “That I won’t get worms?”
14NyquisT…Yeah, don’t know if it’s true or not, but I got a good laugh when I first heard it. LeGrand posted a photo of the great slugger earlier in this thread that reminded me of the story. In reality, if you do a little checking on the life of Hack Wilson, it’s a bit of a sad story. The booze really got the best of the poor guy, which is usually the case. In any event, enjoy today’s game! Or, both games!
The Dodgers laid an egg last night and lost to Milwaukee 4-1. Me and Whitey Herdog tuned in. The Dodgers hit alot of long flyballs but not far enough. It was 1-0 heading to the 9th and the Brewers plated three runs off of Bickford.
Tonight it’s Burnes and Gonsolin. Might be entertaining.

I agree Waino will not be a Hall of Famer. I considered Mike Mussina borderline and he made it. His stats are similar to Waino’s regarding ERA and WHIP but that’s where it ends Mussina won 270 games.
Not sure whos pitching for the baby bears this afternoon. One site had Assad a minor leaguer. We’re on a good roll right now. Got some hits and walks last night even against some tough pitching. Montgomery really blanked them.One hit shutout with no walks.9 complete innings. Read Montgomery was rated 3 with the Yanks but wasn’t needed for post season. They really wanted Bader.
