This thread is for general news and talk about the Cardinals big league camp…
The #stlcards have welcomed 21 non-roster invitees to their 2022 big-league spring training camp. That is down from 28 in 2021, but no one you’d expect to see there is missing. Dig into the details in this free article at The Cardinal Nation! https://t.co/FShZIeovjx pic.twitter.com/I6EJZ4yDKP

March 28, 2022 at 8:00 pm #181380March 29, 2022 at 9:26 am #181397Assuming the Cardinals take 15 pitchers north and assuming Flaherty is on the IL, who is the 15th pitcher going to be? According to the matrix there are currently 14 pitchers on the active St. Louis roster (not counting Flaherty).
March 29, 2022 at 9:40 am #181399Blake Parker maybe?
March 29, 2022 at 9:53 am #181400Good question, gscottar. I just want to make a clarification. The St. Louis part of the Matrix includes the players who finished last season in MLB or equivalent – as long as they are on the 40-man now and haven’t already been optioned out.
So new guys Pujols, Dickerson, VerHagen, Wittgren and Brooks are with StL but non-40-man NRI contenders to make the team like McAllister, Parker, Ryan and Naile are not.
One other related observation. They could keep Walsh on the team and not have to DFA anyone to make room for one of the NRIs. Give him a month of MLB experience and then option him to Memphis for later. The problem with adding a veteran like Parker is what to do with him when the rosters shrink? Of course, Whitley and Helsley have options, too…
Off-day #stlcards bullpen observation. Taking nothing away from NRI contenders McAllister, Parker, Ryan and Naile among others, but RH Jake Walsh is the last 40-man roster pitcher still in camp without prior MLB experience. Walsh is The Cardinal Nation's no. 27 prospect for 2022. pic.twitter.com/Ro2C8tif0o

ParticipantWoody has looked good this spring, of the 7 hits recorded against him, 3-4 would have been made if regualar starters had been in. Really only remember maybe 2 hard hit balls against him, alot of weak contact.
He needs to be the 5th starter, with Ver, as long man.March 31, 2022 at 3:49 pm #181591April 1, 2022 at 5:35 pm #181662I recap the four player moves made by the #stlcards in the last 24 hours and the resulting roster implications. (free) https://t.co/Nlx63C1xzj pic.twitter.com/dvq8ZLgt1z

April 1, 2022 at 11:31 pm #181678What has become of Angel Rondon? I am surprised a 40man roster member would not see action this spring with the big club. Is he injured? I see he was optioned out.
April 2, 2022 at 3:10 pm #181693#STLCards will go: Wainwright, Mikolas, Matz, Hudson to open the season in a four-game set against PIT.
Their fifth starter is still TBD for April 12.

April 2, 2022 at 3:50 pm #181694Is it possible that the team goes north with 14 pitchers instead of 15?
April 2, 2022 at 4:15 pm #181695Bader gets 2/10.5

jj-cf-stlParticipantLocks up his Arb seasons this year and next. Glad to see it. Now I’d like to see a full season from him. SHO-ME!
April 3, 2022 at 12:33 am #181706“Now I’d like to see a full season from him.”
Where does this narrative that Bader can’t play a full season come from?
In 2018, he missed two days due to a hamstring.
In 2019, he missed 9 games due to a hamstring and one day due to a stiff neck.
In 2021, he missed 25 games due to a forearm strain, and he has said he has changed his workout routine because of it. He also missed 34 games due to a rib injury from landing on a ball on a play he makes 98.99% of the time.
So, where does this narrative come from that he can’t play a full season?

April 3, 2022 at 6:12 am #181708Where does this narrative that Bader can’t play a full season come from
Probably comes from his historical stats showing he is good for 400 PAs a year.

ParticipantThe 400 plate appearances stem from him either being a platoon player or from being sent down to the minors some. Otherwise he has been relatively available.
April 3, 2022 at 8:59 am #181713Matheny would bench Bader to get the mighty bats (and horrific defense) of Dexter Fowler and Jose Martinez in the lineup.
Shildt benched Bader to get Dylan Carlson in the lineup when Carlson’s OPS was 500 points below Bader’s.
Both of them were fired for not buying into analytics.
So again, where does this narrative come from?
April 3, 2022 at 9:33 am #181714You could interpret the post about Bader either way:
1. He hasn’t been able to put up a full season because of injuries or poor performance or manager choice due to circumstances, OR
2. He hasn’t had a full season as the starter so it would be nice to see what he can do.
Either way, it would be nice to see what he will do over a full season
April 3, 2022 at 11:16 am #181716I don’t know how Ollie’s use of metrics will play out, but Bader really stunk at home last year as well as in 2019. At the plate I mean. He also will probably not be the best option against lefties pretty often. The elite CF defense should keep him in the lineup mostly I would think, but my guess is we will see 400 or so PAs again.
April 3, 2022 at 11:33 am #181717Bader actually has a career .836 OPS against lefties.
As for the idea Bader is platoon only:
In 1,083 PA’s against righties, Bader had a career.238/.320/.386 slash line, good enough for a .706 OPS.In 977 PA’s against righties, Edman has a .266/.318/.382 slash line, for a .700 OPS.
Edman is our lead off hitter and Bader can’t hit.
April 3, 2022 at 12:09 pm #181720Maybe if Bader would quit trying to be such a pretty boy, get a hair cut, quit trying to prance around the bases like’s he’s really cool, etc, etc, and start acting like a hard-nosed baseball player he might be more of an asset.
And Sean Manaea was traded to the Padres.

April 3, 2022 at 12:40 pm #181721Let’s keep moving the goal posts.
What is the definition of hard-nosed?
Bader gets a lot of his value from defense. Isn’t that where the definition of hard-nosed comes from?
Bader – 10.6 bWAR in 1451 PAs
Edman – 8.8 bWAR in 1267 PAsBader averages 4.38 bWAR / 600, Edman averages 4.17. But now Edman is hard-nosed and Bader is a goof.
April 3, 2022 at 12:44 pm #181722I don’t dispute that Bader hit lefties good in 2018. But I think what he did since then is what the stat crunchers will be looking at. Matt Carpenter was good in 2018 but that didn’t matter last year and what Bader did in 2018 won’t matter this year. Anyway, we will start finding out in a few days and if I have to eat crow pass the mustard.
