    gscottar asked:

Is it possible that the team goes north with 14 pitchers instead of 15?

Until the final decision is communicated, anything is possible. It doesn’t seem likely though.

Donovan was optioned out today. If they did have 14 position players, Spangenberg is the last man standing.

Spangenberg is a really fine bench piece, as long as he isn’t permitted to face any southpaws. Just turned 31, so not terribly old. Sure looked good the other day, driving the ball for a pair of opposite-field doubles — and turning on one for a third double in the same game, of course. He and Edmundo Sosa could both start for some teams, I reckon.

At any rate, I’d much rather keep Spangenberg than a 10th reliever, especially since the Birds will be carrying multiple bullpen guys who are classic swingman types. Hope that’s the way Marmol sees it.

Adding to the Bader debate, I’ll be looking for better base running and for his situational defense to improve. Bader got picked off a lot and overran bases. For defense he’d throw to the wrong base a lot. None of these issues were improved upon as the season ended. So I’ll be watching to see if Marmol picks up on this since Shildt did not. I sometimes wondered if Shildt was really watching the games or if he often got bored and zoned out.

As we all know errors don’t mean much in baseball as they tend to favor offense. So we have to really look at the fundamentals and look objectively at plays to get better. Just because they didn’t call an error doesn’t mean there wasn’t one made. It’s sickening to me that the play by play and commentator will often look the other way or make excuses in favor of their marketing. This way the fair weathered fan won’t know their defense really made a mistake. It’s dumbing down the fans and should be quite insulting to them.

Really impressed by Bally Sports. Not showing the rest of Spring Training sure does make the fans happy.

According to Goold it is 15 pitchers with the 5th starter situation and last reliever still up in the air. Bench is Pujols, Dickerson, Sosa, Nootbaar and Knizner.

Bader hasn’t put in a full season at mlb. He “can’t” is a narrative that belongs to another poster. “Hasn’t” yet is due to change if he stays healthy. SHO-ME!

Goold says what I’ve been saying for days. 😉

If Spangenberg had made the team, what would you have done with him in a month when rosters are reduced? (He can’t be optioned.) On the other hand, sending him to Memphis now and waiting to add him to the roster until later means he can be used later when really needed (when someone else is injured). He wouldn’t play now, anyway. Sosa is the reserve infielder.

Hummel is reporting that Connor Thomas made the team as the third lefty in the pen. That means a 40-man roster spot is also needed.

As evidenced by the game I watched the other day, bader will still throw to the wrong base at times. He tends to be aggressive and that’s the result of that at times. You only have a split second to make a decision, he’s not sitting at home on the couch. He doesn’t need to get a hair cut. Some people need to get a life though. What bader wont or will rarely do is be lazy going after a ball causing someone else to get an error cause they are having to go way out of their area to try to catch a ball.

I liked spangenberg but I agree, best for him to go down now. It seems injuries are an inevitability, so he will be ready to come up when needed.

Wow! Commish whiffed big time. It is Pallante who made the roster, not Thomas. Flaherty to the 10-day IL. 40-man roster move still coming.

The P-D rewrote the entire article with no explanation of why they changed it from earlier this morning. Surprising.

That’s a surprise to see Pallante make the team. He does have really good stuff and probably won’t be a starter long term, so hopefully he can be a good middle innings guy for now.

    A couple more roster-related factoids:

Should have saved the roster spot and kept Walsh. Little chance you will need a 15th pitcher in a meaningful game

The fact that Flaherty opens on the 10 day IL instead of the 60 is encouraging at least.

So Walsh is losing his 40 man spot?

Surprised pallante made it based on his age and such. I’m not surprised based on what I saw of his talent. I’m still not sure he is starter material but for a inning or two he could be lights out if used right. Maybe in time, a starter right might be in the cards. I hope the moment isn’t too big for him.

Not likely, but someone will have to – unless someone besides Reyes is injured enough to go on the 60-day IL. We may not know until Thursday.

My candidates include Waddell, Naughton and Zeuch.
