Do you know if numbers are handed out for non roster invitees, or do they get to choose from ones that are available?
It seems strange that 15, 16, 23, and 25 are still open. Thanks.NRIs get what they are assigned. As I noted in the article, we don’t know what numbers Sanchez and Szczur will get, but they will certainly be two of the unassigned ones.
It is not unusual that some lower numbers are kept open. It is similar every spring, though with a slightly smaller camp in 2021 (about 10% fewer players), there is less demand for numbers overall.
I am not a believer in retiring numbers because there are other ways of honoring great players. One thing I don’t understand is that the Cardinals retire the numbers of former players who make the hall of fame. Ted Simmons’ number is not retired, though.
That too-generous retired policy fortunately changed with the long, long overdue creation of the Cardinals team Hall of Fame. Now there are multiple levels of recognition. Was only 50 years too late. The Reds, for example, started their team Hall of Fame back in the 1950s.
Thompson is taking Darryl Kile’s #57?
Why aren’t those lesser status coaches numbers used by players and just put some sort of descriptive lettering on those coach’s uniforms?
