If you are a leadoff hitter and get on base 30 out of 100 times, that’s not good. As a leadoff hitter, you should be getting on base at least 35 out of 100 at bats. You need to be on base when the meat of the lineup is hitting. A player who hits .270 but hardly ever walks isn’t going to be on base enough. Another hitter who is batting .225 and getting a walk every 12-15 plate appearances could possibly be a better leadoff hitter. He is getting on base.

ParticipantTotally agree with all of that for a leadoff hitter, Forsch.
July 2, 2021 at 11:20 am #165352One of my disappointments is how several guys who were brought up and given a shot didn’t step up and seize the day by producing at the plate. Thomas, Williams, Nogowski, Nooty. All have done well enough at Memphis that they have the skills to have done more with the chance they got.

ParticipantAdd Dean to that list.
July 2, 2021 at 11:59 am #165355I wouldn’t throw Nootbar in that group, yet. He barely got a toe wet.
July 2, 2021 at 12:10 pm #165356So which is better: a guy who drives in 100 runs with 40 home runs or a guy who drives in 100 runs with 80 singles and 10 home runs?
July 2, 2021 at 12:23 pm #165357Tough to say which is better with just that information. You need to have a context to put the comparison to in order to fully know which is better.
On that ‘85 Cardinal team, Tommy Herr was very valuable as a low homer, high RBI guy. That team was built to use speed as an alternative to power. Coleman and McGee were on second and third base so much that Tommy only needed to put the ball in play a lot of times to deliver the run.

ParticipantBoy, that’s a great question. I think I’d have to know how many runs each player scored. The first guy could have scored only 40 times. The second guy up to 90 times.

ParticipantBccran, it wasn’t me who was bringing up OBP. Though I think it’s an important stat depending on batting position. It’s great anytime but guys in 3-5 position, it’s less so if they are producing otherwise. Unfortunately our 2-5 guys aren’t producing. It’s really about stringing hits together at same time. We don’t get enough of that. I agree with you that on paper a lot of guys should be doing better but baseball isn’t played that way.

ParticipantTrue, willie, but that’s how a team is put together. On paper. And the way this team is put together it should be scoring more runs.
July 2, 2021 at 1:14 pm #165364Going from AAA to the majors is a big step. Some guys just don’t have the talent to make the jump. A majority of prospects turn out to be busts. The front office wanted to know what they had in the system before making any moves. Good idea. They know now that Carlson is a keeper and probably O’Neill, though I’m not sold on him yet. They know that Williams and Thomas are expendable and they already dumped Nogowski. They are answering their questions about the talent in the system. I also think Nootbar needs some more time. This was never going to be a year where they pushed for the WS or to even make the playoffs. It was an information gathering year. I think they already know much more about the young talent in their system. What will they do in the off-season? I’m never optimistic about Junior and his gang but I’m always curious.
July 2, 2021 at 1:15 pm #16536580 singles would result in advancing the runner a bunch of times, some of whom likely would score. Probably would also generate some throwing errors. Possibly cause pitcher distraction benefitting other batters.

ParticipantWell bccran, that maybe your opinion about a team but not mine. I wouldn’t put a team together by paper. As far as this team goes, before this season started I don’t remember anybody saying this team was going to be a top run scoring team, in fact mostly I heard doom. So really no surprises. Should they be doing better, yea probably but maybe it’s not a great mix. Could be coaching, could be the players. Probably both. I want to see more consistency from our top players whether that be top paid, top drafted, those are the guys that have got to be better if we still have any chance at all this year.

ParticipantAll teams are put together on paper. With results to follow. Every member of the Cardinals lineup had projections for 2021 prepared by the Cardinals front office. Runs produced, and for pitchers runs allowed. Those projections would have led us to the Division title and probably fairly deep into October. So what happened?
July 2, 2021 at 6:53 pm #165394Who is the last Cardinal to hit 40 homers in a season? Is it Pujols? I’d say 40 homers is way better, just look how rarely it happens for us. I’m not even sure we have anyone on our roster capable of hitting 40 homers in a year! Goldschmidt and Arenado are no longer gonna do this IMO! Maybe O’Neill would be most likely! We’ll have a few with 80 singles this year and they sure ain’t gonna make us winners! I think a bit bat on the middle of our lineup that hit 40 homers would be a godsend for this team!

I don’t think linear weights are above your paygrade. Perhaps you forgot outcomes can be and are weighted.
To double down on “context”, RE24. The 24 base/out states, by outs at that time, compared to every other players outcome, in that same exact base/out situation.
