For very reasonable and unforeseen reasons (COVID), Oviedo was rushed to StL last season. But in 2021, he should be in Triple-A completing his development. The reason there are no other options is a plan that failed.
This past winter, the team chose to stand pat with their perceived pitching depth. Wainwright was the only signing and he was a return. Experienced free agents were available and relatively inexpensive but the Cards passed on bringing in any outside pitching (perhaps to save money?). This decision was made despite advance concerns across baseball that injuries could be up in 2021 because of the significant disruptions in 2020 – which is what has happened.
Now they have to deal with the result.
Oviedo was definitely rushed as was Thompson and Liberatore. Liberatore seems to have stabilized but Thompson has not. He should be in Springfield instead of getting pounded every start.
Bottom line is the Cardinals way overestimated and overvalued their depth.

The FO flat out underestimated the pitching prospects that they traded for Ozuna/Goldschmidt/Arenado. That was giving away the future for players that have underachieved since arriving here. They should be red-faced about having to put LeBlanc in the rotation. BTW one of the better rotations is now the worst in baseball.
What can we expect from Hudson-Hicks-Mikolas and even Flaherty when they return???
The team has to go into the free agents big-time. What the rotation will look like next season is anyone’s guess. I can’t name three that we can rely on right now.
The clouds are thickening upstairs in the Front Office. Does anyone remember who our GM is?
