9:10 p.m.
RHP John Gant (4-3, 1.81) vs. TBA
BSM // KMOX
Also BSSW+ in Oklahoma and Arkansas and BSSE in TN, KY and MSJune 1, 2021 at 10:48 am #162960We are now in 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Cubs. We really need to win one of these next two games because the Cubs have the Padres the next two days and then go to San Francisco for a four game series. Then their next stop is three games in San Diego early next week. Plus we have the Reds at home for four games this weekend. We might be able to pick up 3-4 games on the Cubs in the next ten days or so.
Me and Whitey Herdog will be tuning in to this one late tonight. The really major disappointment about last night’s affair was that it was Scott Warman on the pre/post game instead of Erica Weston. Shux.
Din-din today will be a Subway Chicken Teriyaki sandwich and a piece of Strawberry cream pie. Yum yum.

ParticipantHas there been any news about Flaherty? I could see him missing his next turn just to be safe, so they might as well IL him. There’s an off day on the 7th so that might be the way to go. That would leave us with four starters Kim-Wainwright-Martinez-Gant. Woodford? or ARondon?(started Sunday’s game for the Redbirds). IL is starting to devastate this team.
June 1, 2021 at 1:26 pm #162975The Cubs are really playing well, and unfortunately right now are the best team in the division. Their RS/RA is much better than ours, so it is no fluke.
I doubt Gant will get away with his putting guys on base all the time routine tonight, if he cannot throw strikes. So this one could get ugly like last night.
The alarming stat of the night was the one Dan mentioned about how this club is now tied for second all time in walks with the bases loaded at 15. The 1929 and 1970 clubs did that. The all-time record for a Cardinal team is 17 in 2008.
This outfit looks to blow that record away, with 15 already in the books in the first two months of the season. Yikers!
As for a positive from last night, I do not recall a game where we had two home runs of the magnitude displayed by Williams and O’Neill. Man, those pitches were crushed!

Unfortunately you are correct Mike. The Cubs have played better than I thought they would. Bryant is looking like his old self, their rotation has been fair, but the real surprise has been their bullpen. Kimbrel has been good and the rest are a bunch of no-names but have done very well.
I will say they have had a bit of a soft schedule so far. They have to play some big boys in June. We will see how they do.

Which is part of our struggles as well. We had a fairly soft schedule until mid-May or so, and have had some recent series against tougher opponents. We have not done too well against the good clubs. If memory serves me correct, I think we lost series to the White Sox, Cubs and Padres. Fortunately we are winning series against teams like the Rockies, D-Backs and Marlins. So we are winning most of the games we should win.
But we have not matched up well against the .500+ teams, at least it seems that way.
June 1, 2021 at 4:06 pm #162986The Cardinals are 7-13 against clubs above .500. The Cubs are 12-9.
June 1, 2021 at 4:23 pm #162990The Cubs caught the Dodgers at the right time earlier when the Dodgers were struggling. We aren’t so fortunate.
They have also played the last place Pirates 12 times, the last place Nats 4 times, and the dreadful Tigers 3 times.
In June they get a dose of the Padres, Giants, Cards, Mets, Dodgers, and Brewers, along with the Indians and Marlins.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMr. Gant, I realize you have extinguished two, three-game losing streaks in your last two games started. We’re currently on a 2 loss skid. If you would be so inclined….
Thanks in advance, The Cardinal NationJune 1, 2021 at 6:11 pm #163001
jj-cf-stlParticipantSame lineup as yesterday, but with Rondon in RF instead of Williams, vs the lefty David Price
June 1, 2021 at 6:47 pm #163003So far we’ve increased our win total by 2 each month… and looking ahead to our schedule in June… it’s promising that we can do at least 18 wins. I’m saying 18-9
June 1, 2021 at 7:04 pm #163005Arenado and/or Goldy needs to start carrying this club for awhile. It’s what is expected from them. So far this year, I would give Arenado a comprehensive grade of B- and Goldy a solid D. They need to take their game to an elevated level, especially Goldy. I think one them does exactly that in tonight’s ballgame and the Cards defeat LA 6-4….. I’m getting a crystal clear vision….. it’s Goldy….Goldy is going to ramrod a very long homer tonight.
What’s for din-din one may ask? Prime rib drenched in melted butter, mashed potatoes, asparagus spears, 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies and Newman’s lemonade to wash her all down with.
June 1, 2021 at 7:34 pm #163008Flaherty going on the IL kinda puts an entire damper on the season. I’m not sure how this team can succeed with him out for any extended period of time.
June 1, 2021 at 8:10 pm #163010Flaherty getting injured while batting makes me want the universal DH more and more.
As for grades on Arenado and Goldy, I would go with a B+ for Nolan. He has been solid and we would likely be down at about the Reds level without him.
I agree with the D for Goldschmidt. I doubt too many teams are getting less production from the third spot than St. Louis, and that really hurts as that is supposed to be your best all around hitter.
June 1, 2021 at 8:59 pm #163014Cubs lead the Padres 4-3 in the 7th. Patrick W. Tooth another homerun.
How is the Cubs ‘B’ teams beating the might Padres???
r/Esteemed Rat
p.s. my supper tonight was three pieces of French Toast. Beat up eggs, brown sugar, milk, cinammon, pinch of salt. Put in the non-stick skillet with melted butter in it. Yum yum!
June 1, 2021 at 9:07 pm #163016How’s that diet of your’s working out, Rat? Kinda looks like it’s being shoved to the back burner for now. Diets are for the off season anyway. Tomorrow is Wednesday….. Gustof buffet day.
June 1, 2021 at 9:30 pm #163018Well it could’ve been a real nice start but we only manage 1. I don’t have any stats, but I do feel like Arenado has failed to break too many innings like that open this year. Even one sac fly from the middle of the order would’ve worked
June 1, 2021 at 9:31 pm #163019I can boil down our season so far to our inability to make the most of our opportunities, and our opponents have not had that trouble, including many, many bases loaded walks by our pitchers. Very frustrating, since I think we could have won 3-5 more games. But enough of coulda, woulda , shouldas
June 1, 2021 at 9:36 pm #163020No Bellinger tonight?
June 1, 2021 at 11:53 pm #163027Well the bullpen problems have even gotten to Gallegos tonight. That’s unfortunate. Would’ve been nice to pick up a few more runs when the middle of the order had the opportunity tonight
June 2, 2021 at 12:46 am #163028What a catch by O’Neill to end it! Not as easy as it could’ve been, but it’s a win in LA!!!
June 2, 2021 at 12:58 am #163029Let’s take series. And it’s time to whack Bueller around.
June 2, 2021 at 4:44 am #163031Gant unbelievers repent now before its too late.
June 2, 2021 at 7:20 am #163035bccran
ParticipantReally, really glad to see O’Neill playing so well. He and Carlson give us high hopes for the outfield.
June 2, 2021 at 8:31 am #163040
stlcard25ParticipantNice to get the win to tie the series up. Gallegos has been a little iffier this year for sure, but still mostly solid. O’Neill’s speed in left field is game changing at times. It would be nice to have our entire outfield available, and the staff too.
Gant keeps on humming along. I’m starting to become a believer, which has me scared that the regression will come. But keep riding that hot hand as long as you can, IMO.
