Cards embark on a nine game road trip. WhiteSox, DBacks, and Dodgers. I am hoping to go 4-5 on this trip, that will make me happy. Offense needs something to happen after scoring a grand total of three runs in the last two games against the Cubs. And one of those runs was pretty much a gift.

Not sure what the answer is but perhaps a lineup change might help.

This is going to be a ugly week for the Cards they have a very good chance the cards end up middle of the pack of the central by the time the week is over.

That dire prediction seems an exaggeration. The Sox are a first place team but are coming off having been swept by the Yankees. The D-backs are the worst team in the NL and the Cards play them four times this week.

My mistake, it’s a ten game road trip with four in Arizona. I’ll gladly take a 5-5 record and be happy.

And I am wondering what everyone on here thinks about Goldschmidt. Would it be safe to say that he has been somewhat of a disappointment since coming over in 2019?

In 2019 his homeruns and rbi’s were fine but he only hit .260.

In the shortened 2020 season he hit .304 but with only 6 homeruns.

And now, so far in 2021, he is hitting just .247.

So, what do you guys think? And yes, I know he’s got a BAGIT of 239 and a fWRZ of 11.3 and a BLCZ of 13.58.

There is an entire thread on this board devoted to the topic.

If I wanted to look at only one stat to make a decision, I would be disappointed by looking at batting average. Looking at his whole body of work with the Cardinals, I am happy with the trade.

I am happy with Goldy. Now I don’t think we should resign him after his contract is up and that’s not to say he’s not going to be any good but he’ll be up their in age and perhaps his best years behind him but I don’t think we’ve come to that point yet. I don’t think we’ll ever see the Goldy that Az was privileged to for so many seasons but it’s safe to say.. he won’t be another Carp or Fowler.

Only 1 lefty in the Sox lineup against KK. One of the biggest issues we have had is issuing free passes. I’d be interested to know the stat that showed the percentage of runners scored after getting on Via walk or HBP to runners that earned their way on and scored in our 20 losses. And on the flip side… with our 26 Wins.

I can see Molina having a good game tonight only because he caught Lynn all those years in St. Louis so he kind of knows How Lynn likes to bring it.

A quick comment on Goldschmidt. He is hitting .247, and his OPS+ is 98. Basically he is an average hitter right now compared the league. To help put that in perspective, Tyler O’Neill is hitting .250, but his OPS+ is 127. He is being some 25-30% more productive than Goldy, despite each guy getting a hit about every 4 official at-bats.

The primary reason for that is Ty has the least plate appearances of anyone who would be considered a regular in the lineup, yet has more home runs than anyone not named Arenado. If Ty can improve his plate discipline just a bit, he will be a terrific player and possibly better than Arozarena. As it is, swinging at too many bad pitches is holding him back.

Agree with your comments on O’Neill, BikeMike. He is just decent plate discipline (not even good plate disciple) from being a very good all around player. His K rate has been coming down since he came back from the DL the first time. Hopefully he can step back in when he returns this time as well and play as well as he did this last stretch. A few more walks might not hurt.

Well said bicyclemike. I think right now we are just hoping that Goldy figures it out and in August the post will start something Like Remember when Goldy wasn’t producing in May.. now look at him.

As far as O’Neill… I agree, he does need more plate discipline but I just don’t think he will ever become that great all around hitter. He’s a 240-260 at best, Maybe 35-40 homers. And a good season 115-120 games played.

Here is a trade proposal to consider Sosa or O’Neill for Trevor Story? I’d say DeJong but let’s give the Rockies some credit even though we basically got Nolan for next to nothing, I don’t see the Rockies being that giving with Trevor. And I do realize that obviously it wouldn’t be a straight up trade as the Rockies would want more but if the deal is right and we’re not losing a lot, I’d say consider it if it comes up on the table.

How does everyone else feel about that.

I see Carp is in the starting lineup. Normally I would disagree with this but being that he’s a fastball hitter facing Lynn who’s a fastball pitcher, it makes some sense. I don’t agree with having Sosa hitting 8th. I’d like to see him at least hit 6th..

I don’t understand why Goldschmidt is the DH and Carpenter is at 1B. Goldschmidt is great defensively.

Maybe a bit of a rest for Goldy, since he plays every day. Carpenter hitting 6th is ridiculous. Really should have Sosa there.

With Carp’s one asset these days being drawing walks, I might hit him 9 – sort of a lead in to Edman and Carlson. But maybe he will run in to one tonight and knock a homer, between a couple of Ks and a walk in his other appearances.

    Shildt pregame comments today:

Mikolas to Dr. Andrews on Wednesday for 2nd opinion.

DeJong is on the trip. Took light ground balls. To return to StL after Chicago. Might start rehab later in week (corrected).

Miller to pitch in rehab games for Memphis on Tuesday and Thursday.

Oviedo is the only taxi squad member on this trip. Will throw side Tuesday. Possible that he will start Friday.

Goldschmidt’s moonshot had home run power, but it’s distance (456mm) was somewhat dissipated by the 89.99 degree launch angle.
