Hadn’t realized flaherty has had that good of a era since first game. To me he’s never looked really great, laboring a lot during games. But he’s not giving up lots of runs. Ended the game great tonight.
Well I thought this game might be over, had peeked in to watch kluebers no hitter but when I pop back, Whitley has gotten it bases loaded and now we have Webb on the mound. It may not be over.
Wow, things getting a little scary. Cards effective bullpen down to Cabrera, Helsley, Gallegos, and Reyes. I was hoping Whitley could help, but no much so far.
I think acquiring a bullpen arm and a backup outfielder should be a priority. Of course there are pitchers on the 40 man roster like Fernandez, Rondon, or Flores Jr might help.

What’s the first thing that pops to mind when you see “Genesis Cabrera”? Yep, plunking those two Phillies (mainly Harper) in succession earlier this year. In one respect, it’s a shame really. Because he deserves so much more than that. Cabby is very very good and stay tuned, as Cabby is even going to get better. But on the other hand, if we all are locked in with those thoughts regarding Cabby, then you know batters are thinking the same as they step in vs this fellow. And that’s a good thing.
Good to get two wins to get back on track. Now it’s time to see how they fare against the loathsome Cubs. Having Cmart and Mikolas back will be interesting.

Yep we have been discussing that on the Trades/Acquisitions thread. There should be some interesting names available in July.
While I have steadily been beating the drum for Jose Rondon to get a chance I have to give a shout out to Edmundo Sosa. He has played really well the last few games. I think we would all rather see him in the lineup everyday while DeJong is out instead of Carp. Heck, maybe Sosa should be in the lineup even when DeJong returns.

I have been a little outspoken on that point for the last month. Just from what I have seen of Sosa, his approach in the batter’s box and his athleticism, I think he has a good chance to take over the regular shortstop position if Shildt gives him the playing time. DeJong has trended down offensively for awhile now. He’s not nearly as bad as Carpenter, but similar in that he has lost some of his earlier hitting ability.
In the bullpen, it is probably time to put Fernandez in a middle inning role and release Webb. It would be nice to have another lefty, but the main thing is to have your best pitchers on the staff, regardless of L/R.
Back to Sosa and DeJong and the SS position.

StoryFour shortstops that will hit the free agent market this winter, correct? If DeJong comes back and struggles the rest of the way in 2021 would we be interested in any? I assume all four are going to command somewhat big contracts.

Might not be interested in any of them if Sosa can play. Anyone have info on how long we are committed to DeJong?

I asked this on another thread a few days ago. I thought somebody said thru 2023 but I could be mistaken. I hope DeJong doesnt become another albatross like Fowler and Carpenter.r/Esteemed Rat
Yeah, no kidding. I have never thought Fowler was as much of a bad contract as a lot of folks. He had one really bad year, but was acceptable in the two other full years. Course we punted on this year. But he was not nearly as bad as the Cecil contract. The Carpenter extension looks to be a bigger gaffe as well, but was not for as much money as the total deal for Dex.
If we are stuck with DeJong for two more years after this one, I don’t think we would go after a shortstop given the commitment to Arenado. Now if Nolan opts out, we might be interested as we may rush the “other” Nolan, Gorman up and back to his original position. But I doubt we would do anything to bring in a shortstop regardless of how things play out.
If Sosa’s career takes off and Arenado stays, we would probably shop DeJong in the off season, depending on the contract (no trade and all that). But who knows as there is also the CBA negotiations, which could impact how much a club maneuvers it’s roster.
Worst case, if DeJong becomes sort of the next Carp, you would think he will at least be a little better. I think he can keep his average in the .200s anyway, plus he is a lot better defensively.
DeJong is signed for $4.0 million for 2021, $6.0 million for 2022 and $9.0 million for 2023. The Cardinals could buy out his options for $2.0 million after the 2023 season or pay him $12.5 million for 2024. They could then buy out his last option for $1.0 million after the 2024 season or pay him $15.0 million for 2025.
