6:40 p.m.
RHP John Gant (2-3, 2.15) vs. RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-1, 1.73)
BSM+ // KMOX
Also BSSW+ in Oklahoma and Arkansas and BSSE in TN, KY and MSMay 12, 2021 at 4:11 am #160917This is going to depend on how many innings Gant can hang in there.
It is time to drop Dejong down to 7th and move O’Neill up.

stlcard25ParticipantFacing Woodruff and then Burnes is a tall order for the Cards, but the Brewers offense hasn’t been something to write home about, exactly. I had literally never heard of their #3 hitter last night before I saw him up to bat. It’s sort of like how the Cardinal offense looked at times last year, except their “Goldy” (Yelich) is missing. I still worry about Gant, but think he’ll perform OK in this one. I’ll say the Cards score 3 early on Woodruff (who still makes it 6 innings with no other runs allowed) and 2 late on the Brewers’ B bullpen to win it 5-2.

stlcard25ParticipantThe batting update, using Fangraphs this time (so wRC+):
Edman 109
Carlson 130
Goldy 94
Arenado 130
Dejong 87
Yadi 156
O’Neill 107
Bader 106Carp 56
Knizner 59
Williams 62
Sosa 71
Thomas 83Team 95
The starting lineup is pretty solid all around, with two guys just barely under average. The bench has been very bad and that’s what driving the overall team metrics down. That 95 wRC+ mark is 17th in the league. Despite that, they are 10th in base running and 8th in defense, to rank 13th in MLB in lineup WAR. Going by more traditional metrics, they are 7th in runs scored and 14th in OPS. The Cards have an average offense, it seems, with the potential to be a bit better than average if things go their way a bit. Getting Goldy back up to his expected 115-125 wRC+ and Dejong to around 100 would be a good start.
May 12, 2021 at 9:30 am #160942The Padres are having Covid issues. MLB said Tatis will be out for 10 days. And they also mentioned something about Profar, Myers, Mateo, and Hosmer. Looks like we might be catching them at about the right time.
Din-din today is the weekly trip to the Gasthof, the Amish restaurant. Would be nice if they finally had sweet potatoes but I am not expecting it.

May 12, 2021 at 9:32 am #160943Nice analysis. It could be mentioned that the two below average performers could hardly be more poorly placed at 3 and 5 in the order. Bad luck there.

Brian and Danny Mac were talking this morning about the potential for canceled games if things get worse. Hopefully they don’t, for all involved. But yes, it would be a stroke of luck to catch them missing a number of key players. Sort of like how teams caught us that way last year.

True..the one saving grace for both those guys is that they’ve shown decent pop so far, so the lack of OBP in particular hasn’t been super crippling. But we will need both looking better to be a true contender come October.
May 12, 2021 at 10:48 am #160953I’m afraid this one doesn’t bode well. Gant’s inefficiency with perhaps a couple key relievers not available is a problem. Plus, if Rat doesn’t get his sweet taters, go ahead and lay a bundle on this one. Better to lose and get paid than to just lose. But then again, my prediction should give the Cards hope as I’m not the best at this.
I plan to have shrimp/chicken combo with appropriate sauces and spinach sautéed in VOO.
May 12, 2021 at 12:10 pm #160964Saw that Carl Edwards Jr was released by Atlanta. Wonder if management might want to take a flyer on him with Hicks out for awhile. He has not pitched as well as he once did with Chicago, but still might be worth a shot. Like so many bullpen guys, Edwards is one of those who occasionally has control problems, but is quite effective when he can command his pitches.
May 12, 2021 at 3:38 pm #160975Consecutive win No. 5 is on the line for the #STLCards tonight in Milwaukee. pic.twitter.com/VCnUk2BElf

May 12, 2021 at 4:49 pm #160982Cards get some good news earlier today as the Cubs lose 2-1 in ten innings at Cleveland. The Reds, however, came away with a 5-1 win in ten innings at Pittsburgh.
I am going out to do some trimming/weed eating with the Echo and then hit the shower. Me and Whitey Herdog will once again be on the couch tuning in tonight. Along with a couple of cigars. And then later tonight we’ll catch the last part of the Mariners/Dodgers from Chavez Ravine. Late heroics by the Dodgers last night might have been the spark they needed to get things turned around.

May 12, 2021 at 4:52 pm #160984Wow! What are the odds? Not of a Cardinal victory, but rather that Euro Dandy and Pugs are dining on the same assortment of shrimp/chicken and creamed spinach on this fine Tuesday evening…..but I have no idea what Euro’s “VOO” is? For dessert, it’s pecan pie with Breyers ice cream gracing it’s top. Too bad you’ve been whiffing on being on the receiving end of some Gasthof sweet potatoes, Rat. You better start tipping those Gasthof waitresses more than just an 8×10 glossy pic of the esteemed Rat.
Tough game tonight. I’ll be watching it from the comfort of my living room vs County Stadium, as Rat would say. Carlson should have a big night….two maybe three extra base jolts.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGant is due for a clunker, SINCE HE DOESN’T HAVE ONE YET!

Get your a$$ off your couch and go find Front Row Amy. That’s Amy Williams to most people. Get her back in County, I mean, Miller Park.

May 12, 2021 at 5:55 pm #160991I love it when you’re forceful, Rat. Dreamboat Amy Williams aka Front Row Amy, returns to action this weekend when capacity hits 50%. I’m sure she’s chomping at the bit for some action. If you want to take Amy on a date ( dinner, Mannix and a trip to Inspiration Point), I just may be able to arrange that for you.
I can’t wait for this one to get started. Hope we see an encore performance from David and The Hammer.
May 12, 2021 at 6:40 pm #160995I can’t imagine GG and Reyes will be available tonight… so hopefully Gant can go deep at least 6, 7 would be better. Go Cardinals
May 12, 2021 at 6:41 pm #160996I hate it when we can’t touch a starter until he wears down right after my bed time, like last night. They better light some fireworks early tonight. Don’t make me come down there.
May 12, 2021 at 6:42 pm #160997It’d be nice to get an early lead.
May 12, 2021 at 6:49 pm #160998Another Palma stogey tonight, Rat?
May 12, 2021 at 6:50 pm #160999Gant needs to limit the walks, trust his stuff and get the outs. Keeping the pitch count down is key .
May 12, 2021 at 6:50 pm #161000Good start. 1 pith 1 out.
May 12, 2021 at 6:52 pm #161001Maybe it’s the hair, but Gant reminds me of A young DeGrom.
May 12, 2021 at 6:54 pm #161002Too fast. Even a sting throw doesn’t get him
May 12, 2021 at 6:55 pm #161003From left to right field tonight, it has to be kind of refreshing for O’Neill, Bader and Carlson, knowing you’re not going to get much action with a ground ball machine like Gant dealing. Always nice to get paid to daydream.
