Any news on whether the first cases of Covid will be game ready soon? If not, is it too soon to outright Ramirez. That doesn’t seem fair, but with only Seijas and Sanchez to call up their options are few. Optioning Elledge out could be an option too, but there is no one to replace him with, unless starting Oviedos clock earlier than planned. Another long shot, Rondon.
Also any plans on when Flaherty might pitch?

The first COVID IL players will not be back until sometime after Chicago. It is going to be a while. I wrote about it here. Scroll down to Mo’s remarks.
In addition to Gomber coming back tomorrow, I mentioned on yesterday’s Game 2 thread that Woodford can return as soon as tomorrow as the 29th man. It is not as dire of a situation as it may appear.
As the Wednesday Game 1 thread indicates, Flaherty is the scheduled starter…

Where “he” is Sanchez, the answer is “no”. When Woodford was optioned out, Sanchez essentially moved from no. 29 to no. 28.
The broader point is that the designated 29th man doesn’t have to be the one removed the next day. It can be anyone.
The Cardinals plan to use it to rotate out guys who pitched earlier that day (like Woodford’s three innings) since he will be unavailable for a few days anyway. Better to keep Sanchez around since he is “fresh”.
This is not a good year for anyone in the baseball business, especially those focused on the minors, but we will survive.
Good news on Gomber returning. I would guess he and PDL might be candidates to start game 2, either Monday or Wednesday. Hopefully they eat a good chunk of the 14 innings. Hopefully they won’t have to use a bunch of pitchers tomorrow.

Check the Tuesday game thread. Ponce is the named starter.
I guessed on Monday Game 2 thread that Gomber will be the starter. However, if KK bombs early in Game 1, Gomber could be the long man there.

As a practice, I avoid nevers and always, but if claimed, yes Ramirez would be gone for the foreseeable future for sure.
However, as noted by C27, he probably would go unclaimed and have to return to the minors. A team can only do that to a player once, however.
I am guessing the next transaction would be sending Ramirez down, and adding Gomber. Or possibly sending Elledge down, and adding him as 29th person Wednesday.

The Cards may have just pulled a Mike Mayers with Roel Ramirez. That one got out of hand quicky.
I’m still annoyed how the Cards treated Mayers and he has carried his debut with him even to this day. Fans still remember the Wong pick-off…. this will stay with Ramirez and his rep for the rest of his life. Three dingers may not have been so damaging. Too late now for Shildt to pull him. Brutal.
The bottom line is that we currently have a depleted roster and a lot of doubleheaders coming up, which is not a good combination. Taking two out of three against the Sox was good. Hopefully we can win two or three at Wrigley. The Cubs aren’t looking quite as formidable after the Brewers beat them three times in a row. I still think the Cubs have some weaknesses with their pitching that can be exploited.
Other than Ramirez, the Cardinals got pretty good production from everyone over the the weekend. We just need to hold things together until our covid IL players come back. I am not so concerned about winning the division. Just get in the playoffs and see what happens. There isn’t a big advantage to winning the division this year anyway.
Speaking of Mayers, as of a few days ago he had one bad outing, but all others he hadn’t given up a run. It is quite amazing how we have drafted and developed pitchers.
So what’s the bullpen look like when everyone gets healthy?
