Gyroko has a history of burning his former teams. He used to roast the Padres when he played with us.
Ponce two runs thru 4 innings … 71 pitches … on pace to throw 89 pitches thru five complete. The fifth inning is probably his final inning.
Overall this is really not a bad outing for Ponce. He made the one mistake but we need the bats to come alive.
Speaking of cool bats a couple of us stated last week we would probably not offer a deal next year to Brad Miller because his numbers probably weren’t sustainable. He was hitting .320 at one time. He is now hitting .257.
Some like to point out the failures of the OFs. How about today’s stats:
OF – 8 of the 29 left on base.
Goldy, Miller, DeJong – 14 of the 29 left on base.It’s not just about the OF.
Goldy is hitting .217 in the last week, .240 in the last 15 days. Miller is hitting .158 in the last week, .208 in the last 15 days.
8 base runners for the Cards through 4-2/3 innings and it’s looking likely that it will result in 0 runs. The situational hitting by this team is awful tonight.
The Reds swept the Pirates tonight. If we get swept by the Brewers both of those teams are going to be all over us. A very tenuous situation obviously.
Ponce 81 pitches thru five innings giving up two runs. Has kept his team in a position to win if they can score.
Have the Crew switched back to these ‘80s style uni’s as their primary look? Those MB mitt-ball hat logos have always been popular.
The starters today get an A+ in game 1, and an A- in game 2. The offense is an F so far. Hope that changes.
Nice job by O’Neill beating out that dribbler to short to produce an RBI. Made up for his failure to score from second earlier on that Wieters hit. Call it even.
Lane Thomas seems like a great kid. I pull for him. But I just don’t see it.
Man we need to pull this one out somehow. Only one run down, but it feels like more.
This is about the best we could hope for from Ponce. He was way more efficient than usual and let his swing and miss stuff work. When right, he is a 5-6 inning starter with some walks but a good number of Ks. Long term, I still think he’s better off as a reliever in the Gant mold, but he at least spared the bullpen from being totally chewed up with a gutsy start.
Finally some clutch hitting! Goldy with the double and Miller drives him home. Bader now in to pinch run from 2nd.
