Uh ok Shildt. He pinch hit for O’Neill twice last week as I recall.
O’Neill has played in 23 games this year. He finished 21 of them. He was pinch hit for twice, both times replaced by a left-handed hitter to try to get a better matchup in a close game late. That was not the situation last night.
I do not see this as “flip-flopping.”
P.S. I stand slightly corrected. Carlson was the one batter on the bench who could have hit from the left side. But was that option appreciably better than O’Neill? Shildt apparently did not think so.
(Updated to correct game counts above.)

ParticipantCarlson hitting left handed vs. O’Neill against right handed pitching? Actually this year O’Neill has been better against righties, though. He’s batting .190 against RHP and .100 against LHP.
September 3, 2020 at 10:20 am #138418I am surprised that we watched 3 Reds games and there right behind the left hand batters box and two rows up sat the cardboard version of Marge Schott and nobody mentioned her. Marge was a piece of work in her day. Was she there when Pete Rose got axed?
September 3, 2020 at 12:02 pm #138426Brian, when Shildt says that “these guys have to face these kinds of situations to be every-day players”, does that not apply to the two times O’Neill was pinch hit for recently? That is why I labeled it flip flopping.
September 3, 2020 at 1:58 pm #138441As I watched, I didn’t want Yadi to bunt. Cards already had Miller in scoring position and I thought Yadi was a better bet to drive him home from 2B than O’Neill and Thomas were to get him home from 3B. I thought the first show at bunting by Yadi was just setting him up to swing away against a moving infield. After Yadi put down the perfect bunt, I felt like it set the Cards up for you know what — and then it happened.

ParticipantAll it took was a sac fly, a squeeze, a passed ball, a wild pitch, a balk, etc.
And on the outside of the equation, maybe even a hit! Anything but two unproven prospects striking out.September 3, 2020 at 2:25 pm #138444gscottar, I understand what you meant and I believe your expectation is unreasonable. Shildt did not paint himself into a corner by making a promise that he would NEVER, EVER PH for O’Neill and Thomas. That would be stupid, especially when he has a better LHH on the bench with an advantage. That was clearly the case in one of the only two times O’Neill was hit for. Unfortunately, Wong was not on the bench again last night. (The only other time was during Shildt’s brief infatuation with Max Schrock, apparently because he had an eight-pitch at-bat one night.)
You call that flip-flopping. I call it managing.
September 3, 2020 at 4:27 pm #138452Euro. I agree. I did not like the call for Yadi to bunt in that situation, for the reason you mentioned. How many times have we seen Yadi serve a little bloop single out to right center to score the run from second. A bunch.

And how many times have we seen him hit into a double play. I don’t know what I would have called but the bunt moved base runners along and only resulted in one out. Good by me.
September 3, 2020 at 6:09 pm #138455Good point, MM3.
And normally I’m a move the runners along type guy. So I am kind of surprised I didn’t like that move at the time. But I didn’t. Just had a bad gut feeling. I’m not going to kill Shildt over that move. I like his moves more often than not.
September 3, 2020 at 7:34 pm #138461The DP with Yadi was certainly a concern and I’m sure factored into the decision. You had to weigh that against the likelihood O’Neill would whiff against Iglesias. That decision is not a layup.
September 4, 2020 at 8:59 am #138493Normally moving the runners along is a solid baseball move but until this team gets better at hitting with runners in scoring position I’m not sure it is the right strategy. We don’t need to give away outs.
