Yup. Just more political pandering from the Redbird front office. (As everyone knows of course, Nabil Crismatt is only on the team because he’s an anagram for “BLM antiracist.”)
But seriously folks, game 2 was lost when Shildt pulled Gant from game 1. Gant was fantastic, fanning 3 of 4 batters and requiring just 13 pitches to do so.
But Shildt pulled him. After those 13 pitches. And inserted Gallegos — who should have and would have been available for the high-leverage sixth inning of game 2. That would have been nice, wouldn’t it? To have Gallegos available?
(In case anyone is interested, Gant threw between 27 and 37 pitches on 11 occasions last year, and only once did he allow a run in his next outing. So obviously he can throw A LOT more pitches, with no lingering after effects.)
Leaving Webb in did lose the game — but it was largely lost before it even began. Stupid managers make knuckleheaded decisions that have ripple effects like a turd tossed in a reflecting pool.
To clarify, the three-batter rule applies whether or not the pitcher started the inning.
Webb’s first three were:

Happ sacrifice

Correct for completeness, but not applicable to this case since Webb needed more than three batters to finish the inning. (He faced six.)
However, had he been able to retire his first two batters, then yes, the half-inning and potentially his night would have been over. Clearly, that would have been a much better outcome.
I haven’t yet read any game comments but I see Dylan Carlson’s efforts as one of needing experience on big league pitching (but some were Alternate site guys). His fielding is spot on and he has a good eye with the bat but, at this point, he is a swinger. You could see at his last AB he woke up to that and decided to watch but #3 was right down the middle. He will be a keeper for sure. Also the success of the Alt Site pitchers can probably be partially attributed to the fact that they have been working out while the main team was quarantined but I have to say I was overall impressed with them. Sorry to say that most will be sent back down when the regulars recover. That’s just the way of the game but we have learned a lot about some of them. The Cubs were not just any old team to be pitching against.
It seems like Shilty’s good move to walk a batter in Game 1 came back to bite him in Game 2. You can’t win them all I guess.

I think we will all have to come to grips with the fact that due to the situation we are in with so many doubleheaders and a reduced roster, we are going to lose some games simply due to attrition. It stinks, but it’s where we are at. Getting Cmart, Helsley, Dejong, Yadi, etc back should help a bit. But we will have a lot of B lineups for 2nd games of double headers and guys at the end of the bullpen pitching in critical situations. Shildt has to be better, but it’s going to be beyond his imagining at times.
On another note, I love the shorter 7 inning games. I’d be in favor of adding some scheduled double headers to the schedule going forward that are played as 7 inning games. Not sure it would make owners money so who knows if it would ever happen, though.

Yep… unfortunately, you are correct. I do think that shorter games are something that could help attract a potential fan who sees 3.5 hour+ baseball games 162 times as a deal breaker (as my non baseball loving friends seem to all indicate). It is refreshing to have games go around 2 hours again.
I am not a fan of 7 inning games, but they are a necessary evil to relieve pitching staffs beleaguered with many double headers in a short span. I also don’t think the borderline/casual fan would be attracted to shorter games in the long run.

This is very true and is why I am skeptical we can mount a serious challenge at winning the division. We just need to make sure we finish second so we are assured of a playoff spot. There are two wild cards but as long we finish second we are in. I feel confident we can finish ahead of the Brewers, Reds, and Pirates.

I agree with this too. They are a breath of fresh air. Of course the minors have done this for quite some time. I would like to see 7 inning doubleheaders become a thing of the future. Maybe the owners could slap an extra fee on hot dogs on doubleheader day. :o)
I will also say, and I know my long time NL friends will disagree, but I like the DH. I hope it stays too.

I am afraid that we have been DHed permanently. I know it was only supposed to be for 20 & 21 but once here I don’t see a prayer of getting rid of it. I am looking for the electronic strike zone. Since they started showing the little box a few years back they have created a demand for more accurate calling of balls and strikes. Inconsistency seems to be the name of the game with various umpires and this season there are 10 of them opting out so the players have 10 more to learn their tendencies. Oh well, as long as they say PLAY BALL who am I to complain? I sure like the pitching we have from the alternate site.
