Oh, I was not suggesting the Cards drop a player to pick another in Rule 5. I was just wondering about 13/13 vs. alternatives for next year.
Rosters will expand from 25 to 26 players in 2020. A team can carry a maximum of 13 pitchers on its 26-man roster.
Even if 13 pitchers is the maximum Jones could still be a candidate for someone to select. Perhaps a rebuilding team looking to add depth.
MPWR2, that MassLive article you shared is nothing more than a very quick and dirty summary of a Jeff Passan ESPN article from March. Fortunately, MassLive at least included the link to the original news source. Here is the relevant section from the original ESPN article.
“A committee between the sides that will study the game is expected to make recommendations on the maximum number of pitchers allowed on the rosters. In negotiations, the league proposed 13 during the first five months of the season and 14 in September.”

I am going to get on my soapbox for a minute. So much of what is on the net is not original reporting. In this example, the shorthand version cut out important detail, incorrectly reporting a proposal as fact. Readers, beware!

March 13: Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have reached an agreement on a series of changes regarding roster construction, per both Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) and Jeff Passan of ESPN. While it seems that this wave of agreed-upon changes will not technically impact actual in-game rules, the two sides have agreed to make July 31 a hard deadline for the completion of trades, thus doing away with the convoluted August waiver system. That change will go into effect for the 2019 season, and beginning in 2020, the standard roster size will expand from 25 to 26 (with a 13-pitcher maximum).
I have followed this from the very beginning. I am really sorry you cannot distinguish the difference between a proposal and a final decision. Your reading comp needs work.
Here is what your MLBTR story says:
“A maximum number of pitchers will be designated by the Joint Committee. (Passan reported that the league has proposed no more than half a team’s players can be pitchers.)”
MLBTR is usually accurate, but their primary business is to regurgitate news from others. In this case, they cite THE SAME PASSAN STORY I linked to above. But they seemed to get the complete picture as they updated their article several times when more detail came to light.
The issue here is NOT what was proposed in March. The question is what the committee settled on later and what was ultimately accepted. At this point, I haven’t seen the conclusion.
Cardinals lose 1 in minor league phase, C-O’Keefe, and gain 3 MILB pitchers, Brink, Saldana, and Bosiokovic. The latter 2 made the switch from position player to pitcher.
When did the Cardinals sign Rob Kaminsky to a MiLB contract? Accord to D. Goold he was on the Cardinals list of eligible Rule 5 players today.

Since Kaminsky finished 2019 at Triple-A, I put him on the Memphis roster here. Spring training will answer the question, but in the interim, his roster assignment does not carry great significance, with me, at least.
I wanted to check up on Kaminsky’s career numbers which aren’t impressive. The Cards pick up former #1 picks from other teams on occasion but bringing back one of our own misses seems strange. To me it makes little sense to have another reminder of that around.
There may be a good reason for this signing and if anyone knows of one, please let us know.
Veteran Triple-A bullpen depth. They add a few guys who fit that profile every year and some even last the entire season. I doubt it is any more complicated than that, and it isn’t like he requires a 40-man roster spot. So, what is the risk being taken here? Finally, is anyone really concerned about reminders from the past?
I am reminded of the best hs curveball in the nation and that it appears he still can strike people out.
We need left handed pitching of any kind. I wonder where we would rank of all 30 teams left handed pitching prospects. Besides Thompson, who is in the top 5 to 10 group, only Krucynski and Warner come to mind as being top 50 at one time. That’s pretty sad in terms of quality and depth.
Lefty relievers they added last year off the scrap heap for Memphis included Cervenka and Layne. The year before, Gilmartin and Webb. In this game, 1-for-4 isn’t a bad result.
Prior to them signing Kaminsky, I had 10 relievers on my tentative Memphis roster. All are right-handed.
