Well…this series is one that reminds me of the old saying, “Ya gotta make hay while the sun shines.” The Reds are not playing well, and the Cards are. Solid, fundamental baseball should ensure at least two wins in this series.

Homer has actually pitched ok against the Cards this year…19 1/3 innings in three starts with 8 earned runs. The Reds have lost all three of his starts against St Louis by a combined 4 runs. Let’s hope tonight is the time the Cards offense breaks out against him.

The Reds aren’t playing that badly. They just can’t finish. They just played the Brewers very tough at home. Though they won only the opener, they dropped Games 2 and 3 in extra innings. Their pitching gave up 21 runs in the series and they scored 21.

Well, they’re 2-8 in their last ten games and have been outscored by 25 runs. They’re the main reason the Cards haven’t been able to make up ground on the Cubs and the Brewers lately.

Maybe it’s not abysmal baseball, but it’s definitely not good. I hope it continues for at least three more games, though. ?

The Giants send McCutchen to the Yankees. One less bat we will have to contend with in September when the Giants come to Busch.

I am going to have to miss the game tonight as I will be at the high school football game. Boonville at Jasper. Home Opener for the Jasper Wildcats. I am picking the Cats in this one 35-14.

Votto gets activated to play against us after he missed the series against the Cubs and Brewers. Figures.

Great to see Cards winning in spite of the injuries.
    Still there are some concerns
1.Tyler O`Neill seems to be going into one of his bad streaks and I hope Budaska can get him to just worry about contact instead of trying to hit a 5 run Homer every time. With his power the homeruns will happen naturally.
2.Hicks and Hudson and Shreve all having control issues.
3.Injuries,injuries,injuries……how many times can the Cards fight back with a depleted roster?
4.DeJong-i think his hand is obviously still having a effect on his game.I don`t think we see the good DeJong till next spring.
Kudos to the manager and coaches and the team for playing like it means something again.Nice to see most of the kids stepping up and some vets helping show the way.

O’Neill and his strikeouts are worrisome. Same way with a lot of the Cardinals. Sometimes I wonder what the minor league coaches are doing since the players seem to strikeout all the time. Choke up, shorten the swing, become a punch and judy hitter with two strikes.

And speaking of strikeouts, I see Randall Grichuk is about his normal self for Toronto. He’s hitting .247, 19 homeruns, and has struck out 87 times. About a 25% K rate this year. Maybe a little better than year’s past, don’t know.

Enjoy the football game, Rats. That is great that you are supporting the local teams. It’s to the point now where I enjoy watching youth sports more than the pro’s.

As for this series, as stlcard25 says we need to sieze the opportunity to take advantage of a below-.500 ball club. 2 of 3 is the minimally acceptable success rate for this series.

Grichuk has done a remarkable turnaround since the first 4-6 weeks he was hitting under .200 by a bunch.Grichuk is wha he is.Big power, solid defense ,bunch of strikeouts.I liked him as a Cardinal and wish him well.
I hope Budaska can help ONeill improve his plate discipline and he has helped him before.I think ONeill and DeJong are trying to do too much at the plate and not taking what is pitched and dealing with that.I think both can and will improve with experience……DeJong still has barely 200 MLB games experience and O`Neill is still a raw rookie.

Is this the last easy contender that we play? We need a good series against Cincy.

We sure do, RememberDiz. Oh, and Rat…your Jasper team has two chances of winning tonight…slim and you know what. I’m calling it Boonville 53 and Jasper 2.

Would love to have this Suarez fellow manning the hot corner for us. Sign Machado in the off season and what an infield that would look like…2-3-4-6-5 around the horn….Yadi-Carp-DeJong-Machado-Sanchez. Gomber yields 2 runs and 4 hits in the 1st.

Homer Bailey dealing for Cincy…his father, Triple Bailey, and mother, Single Bailey, in attendance for this one.

    Carp skies out to left.

Yadi grounds out to the aforementioned Suarez at 3rd….and Bailey has only had to fire 4 pitches thus far.

Jose spanks a single up the middle.

    Big City whiffs.

    2-0 Reds

This one cannot be starting out as Shildt had planned. Long long way to go in this puppy though.

Reds leave a runner stranded at 2nd as they do not score in their half of the 2nd.

O’Neill pops out to Gennett at 2nd.

DeJong grounds it off the glove of Suarez at 3rd and that’ll go in the books as an E-5.

Bader reaches 1st on the 6-4-0 fielders choice….that would have been a twin killing for anyone else on this field not named Billy Hamilton.

Munoz lines a base hit to left as Harrison will motor around to 3rd.

Gomber blisters one deep to center!….Hamilton races back…jumps..and it’s over his head and going to the wall! Bader scores…in comes Munoz and this game is tied at 2 on the Gomber double!! Boy our pitchers sure have been getting some big hits of late.

Carpenter ramrods a long drive to right!…back and long gone!! Home run #35 puts the Birds on top 4-2!

Jose looks so unsure of himself out there in right….kind of the opposite of Dexter Fowler who looks way too nonchalant. You like to have your outfielder look and act smack dab in the middle of those two.
