Note the one hour early start.
6:15 p.m. RHP Jack Flaherty (6-6, 3.22) vs. RHP Tanner Roark (7-12, 4.12) FOX Sports Midwest/MLB Network/KMOX
It may not be obvious by looking at the daily matchups, but despite it being a four-game set, the Cardinals will avoid Scherzer (and Strasburg is on the DL again).
Update: Late change to Luke Weaver as starter with Flaherty moving to Friday.

stlcard25ParticipantI was gonna mention that Dan said so on last night’s broadcast. That’s a break for the Cards there. Hopefully they can take advantage and win another series.
August 12, 2018 at 6:37 pm #65177Never ceases to amaze me how often (far more than the normal odds of probability would dictate) teams on a roll will miss their opposing team’s ace. In this instance, we missed two of them…..which is a very good sign from the baseball Gods.

stlcard25ParticipantI’ve been thinking lately of a Cards team that this reminds me of. The 2001 team came to mind. I even had remembered that they had a stretch of wins that left them “stuck” on 55 losses for a while. The bullpen seemed to get as the year went on, as did the rotation after a bit of a shaky start trying to find starters.
Looking at BBR, they had an 11 game winning streak that started when they were 57-55 on August 9 and ended August 19 with the dust settling at 68-55. That same team also had separate 9 and 6 game win streaks in September and ended up with 93 wins and a tie for the division.
Of course, that team also had Albert, Jimmy and the best version of JD Drew mashing and a good rotation that was bolstered by the Woody Williams trade.
Still, I can see some similarities with the way this team is playing. Hopefully this version of the Cards can keep rolling.

ParticipantWeaver tonight… Flaherty tomorrow.
August 16, 2018 at 9:18 am #65645This is a very puzzling Nats team. It just doesn’t add up how they could be where they are in the standings. They have a scary lineup and the best starting pitcher on the planet. Unfortunately for them the rest of their rotation has been very pedestrian and their bullpen is depleted. The biggest blunder is they keep switching managers every couple of years. I just can’t fathom firing a manager after winning 97 games. I have a suspicion their front office isn’t the problem. It is probably ownership who are trying to do their George Steinbrenner impersonation. Poorly ran organization.
Regardless, let’s get the sweep and send them on their way.
August 16, 2018 at 10:16 am #65657bullpen has been a mess and injured for a while…Strasburg cant stay healthy…Gio Gonzalez has went from a rock to mercurial…the rest of the rotation is so so… Murphy has been hurt almost all year, Turner and Eaton have struggled to stay healthy consistently, Robles and Taylor havent been consistent, Harper is having a super down year and is leaving so focus may be an issue… Soto has been a highlight and Rendon and Zimmerman have stepped up…to go with Scherzer…
to me it reads like a pretty typical .500 team…lots of underperforming players with 2/5th of a rotation and no bullpen…
i still dont want to play them as the bats could wake up at any time..and Scherzer can carry a rotation by himself at times…still without a healthy Strasburg there isnt much to fear in after you deal with Scherzer…just wait out the starters and eat up their pen
August 16, 2018 at 10:16 am #65658Strasburg is on the DL again – Shocked I tell you shocked.

August 16, 2018 at 3:57 pm #65671Hey Yasiel Pugs?
Whats the weather like in downtown St. Louis now? Any chance of a delay here? Its been raining a lot here in SW Indiana today. We really needed it too.

August 16, 2018 at 4:19 pm #65674Sorry Rat! I’m hanging out in the great State of Colorado this week. For what it’s worth, it’s 83° here in Colorado Springs under light hazy clouds….winds out of the west north-west at 6 mph…barometric pressure nestled presently at 30.13 with particulates hovering right around the 46 mark and the ozone at 56. Spotty and storms are very possible late this afternoon and early tonight….but these should have no effect on tonight’s game vs the Nats.
August 16, 2018 at 4:21 pm #65675
jj-cf-stlParticipantO’Neill and Garcia get a start.
Tyson on 3 days rest. Wonder if he will piggyback weaver?
Hicks, Hudson, Mayers and Shreve on one days rest.
(omitting Cecil. I’m in denial)
August 16, 2018 at 5:16 pm #65680On a good note……the Phils trail the Mets 15-4 in the 6th or 7th inning. Assuming, of course, the Mets hang on and another Redbird win tonight we would be tied with the Phillies for the 2nd wild card spot.
Correct?
August 16, 2018 at 6:00 pm #65681Correction……The Phils now trail the Mets 22-4 in the 8th. I think this one is a safe bet.
No letups tonight, guys.
August 16, 2018 at 6:14 pm #65682I think we would be percentage points being the Phillies. The last forty-one games may be so close that we are looking at ties with head-to-head games deciding the races.
I worry with Weaver.
August 16, 2018 at 6:14 pm #65683
jj-cf-stlParticipantCorrect
August 16, 2018 at 6:28 pm #65684
jj-cf-stlParticipantCorrect rats, both would be plus 12 wins.
The example would be phillies and brewers tied this morning, with brewers having played 4 more games. Viewed as tied.August 16, 2018 at 6:57 pm #65685wagee12
ParticipantSomeone please tell me that Weaver will not make another start for the Cardinals in 2018. Send him to Memphis and open up a spot for one of the guys coming off the DL, please, please.
August 16, 2018 at 7:06 pm #65686I tweeted this just prior to Bader’s solo home run, his ninth long ball of the season.
#stlcards Harrison Bader is slugging .672 (39 total bases in 58 ABs) when leading off an inning this season — 6th best in MLB among hitters with at least 177 PA's; League Avg: .433. (per @InsideEdgeScout)

jj-cf-stlParticipantI hope the FO makes Bader a DeJong like contract offer.
August 16, 2018 at 7:22 pm #65690
jj-cf-stlParticipantUgh, our leadoff DH strikes again.
August 16, 2018 at 7:28 pm #65691Those 2 runs are on Carp’s head for not catching the ball at first.
August 16, 2018 at 8:34 pm #65694
stlcard25ParticipantThe Cards are scratching and clawing back into it, and then the words that will cause any Cards fans to break into a sweat…”Brett Cecil is warming in the Cardinal pen.”
August 16, 2018 at 8:37 pm #65695One-run deficit heading into the final three innings.
August 16, 2018 at 8:41 pm #65696Way too early to give up on Weaver. He is still a kid and is going to have ups and downs.Wanting him to go to Memphis is rather foolish IMHO.You live with the growing pains with young players.
