Gant being pulled at only 63 pitches. Really good start for him, after not looking so hot early on.

Gant has to know his leash is short with so many other options available and he did especially well knowing that, IMO.

So far, I can’t think of any instance of the Cards pulling the pitcher early that has paid immediate dividends in the Shildt era. The pinch hitters have yet to deliver. Hopefully that trend won’t continue.

What’s the deal w/Ponce? pitched last wednesday and hasn’t since.

I’d guess they’re keeping him for a longer relied outing. You’d think he would get some work one way or another in the KC series.

Gant finished at 63 pitches through 6.

Seems like the Cardinal pitchers are being more efficient now that they have a better infield defense behind them.

Would Ponce be better off pitching regularly in the minors and recently demoted Brebbia being the forgotten man in the pen?

I don’t think he’s forgotten…there just haven’t been as many chances to get him in lately.

Brebbia is a classic one inning guy and Ponce can go 4+ innings if needed. I think the Cards like the versatility. Gomber coming up is always a risk to have a short outing, as was Weaver last night and Gant tonight. Flaherty even hasn’t exactly eaten innings this year. Other than Mikolas, it’s been tricky to get consistently to the 6th and beyond with these guys.

True. It’s nice to have bullpen options for a change. Feels more like 2013 again when Trevor and Maness were lights out.

Not sure I’ve seen anything like the Bader slide. All in all, he’s lucky he didn’t get hurt much worse. Lucky he didn’t break a bone with how his hand/wrist jackknifed and the momentum of his own body working against himself.

Recent short outings have been for PH appearances. Flaherty could have pitched the 8th but Schildt had his heart set on Shreve getting an appearance.

Gant tonight. It’s as if there are too many who need to throw out of the pen and starters are getting quick hooks.

I’d rather have another bench player.

Overall I’d tend to agree. But with how bad the bullpen has been and considering the lack of options at AAA besides maybe Wisdom, I’m ok with the current setup.

Yadi with the nice double to extend the lead to 7-1 going to the bottom of the 9th.

Nice win there, finally broke though and then kept extending the lead. 7-1 is the final and the Cards move to 60-55.

jj, I saw this factoid today about Bader (from Inside Edge).

“Harrison Bader is slugging just .243 (27 total bases in 111 ABs) on low pitches this season — 11th worst in MLB among hitters with at least 165 PA’s; League Avg: .377.”

The book is out on him. Now, can he adapt?

Also, I agree with Euro. Someone needs to tell Bader to stop sliding headfirst.

I feel so much better about this version of the bullpen. They should have made changes a month earlier.

    2 months earlier. lol

I think we’ll pass up Colorado in the WC standings at some point. It will be hard to pass Arizona with that cupcake schedule. We need some help from some teams lower then us and some lesser teams to pass both ATL and Arizona the next 13 games.

Booyah, I agree that they’ll need some help. If any two of the teams ahead of them get hot, it’ll make it nearly impossible to make it to the Wild Card.

That said, mostly it just depends on the Cards continuing to win series. If they could sprinkle a sweep in a few times, that would be big. I’d feel better about it with a healthy Cmart and Wacha, but if the bullpen continues to show such fortitude and we can get a couple of hitters (Dejong? Ozuna?) hot along with Marp, they could get hot enough to get to 90 wins.

To get to 90 wins they need to go 30-17 the rest of the way. That is a .638 pace – certainly not impossible but not likely of a .522 club. We would basically need to turn into the Astros, as that is about the pace they have played at this year.

Of course it has happened. Our 2011 team was only 2 games better at this point, 62-53, and finished with 90 wins.

And then there is the mind-boggling 1942 team. Starting on this very date, August 9th, they went 43-8 the rest of the year! That is an .843 pace. Not sure how that stands all time over 51 games, but it has to be one of the best stretches of baseball ever played. You could make a strong case that from August 9th through the end of the season, the 1942 Cardinals were the greatest team ever put on the field in MLB.

And they capped that by beating the Yankees in five games in the World Series. Wow!

If the Cardinals win every series for the rest of the year, they should be over that .638 pace.
