Another day brings another notification of a St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitcher being given his unconditional release. On Saturday, the team disclosed it has let go right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz, the 12th farmhand to be released late in camp.
The 21-year-old native of the Dominican Republic was first signed in May 2018. He began his professional career as a starting pitcher in the 2018 Dominican Summer League, posting a 5.81 ERA in 14 appearances, 11 starts. After opening 2019 back in the DSL, Ortiz was promoted to the US, where he made nine starts between the Florida State League (3.43 ERA) and rookie-advanced Johnson City (10.73).
After sitting 2020 out, Ortiz moved to relief full time as a member of the Low-A Palm Beach bullpen. For the Beach Birds, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder appeared in 33 games and logged a 6.68 ERA. Baserunners were prevalent, with 71 hits and 47 walks issued in 60 2/3 innings.
