Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 8, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system had only one game on Thursday with Memphis taking a loss to the Gwinnett Stripers at AutoZone Park. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is left fielder Alec Burleson, who singled, doubled and scored a run.

Memphis 2, Gwinnett 5

Playing as the Memphis Chicks, the Memphis Redbirds (1-2) fell 5-2 to the Gwinnett Stripers (ATL, 2-1) in the third game of the season Thursday night.

The Stripers got on the board in the second inning, scoring three runs against starter Johan Oviedo. By the end of the fourth inning, the visitors were up, 4-0.

The Redbirds got on the board in the fifth inning after Alec Burleson doubled and Luken Baker singled. Ivan Herrera grounded out, scoring Burleson. Conner Capel then singled to left, plating Baker. The offense went quiet after the fifth, though.

Oviedo was taken out after the fifth giving up four runs on five hits and striking out four. Johan took the loss for the night. Four pitchers handled the final four innings. James Naile tossed a scoreless inning before Kyle Ryan walked two and hit a man letting in one. Junior Fernández and Jake Walsh finished with a scoreless inning each with a hit yielded and a pair of strikeouts.

Burleson and Baker, the number four and five hitters, each had two of Memphis’ six hits. Redbirds batters struck out 11 times with Juan Yepez wearing the golden sombrero (four strikeouts in four at-bats).

Conner Capel had his first stolen base of the year in the fifth inning.

Springfield, Peoria and Palm Beach all have their season openers on Friday.
