Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 7, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system had one game on Wednesday with Memphis losing at AutoZone Park. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is first baseman Luken Baker, with a solo home run and two RBI.

Memphis 3, Gwinnett 5

The Redbirds played Gwinnett in the second game of the season at AutoZone Park. Memphis (1-1) was defeated by the Stripers Wednesday afternoon by the score of 5-3.

The Redbirds got on the board first with a run in the first inning. Brendan Donovan led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error. Nolan Gorman drew a walk. Luken Baker then flied out into a double play and Donovan scored.

Memphis didn’t score again until the sixth inning. The offense scored twice on a solo home run by Baker and an RBI single by Evan Mendoza. For the day, the Redbirds had five hits with no player getting multiples.

Matthew Liberatore made the start and pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and fanning five. The left hander took the loss. Angel Rondon tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Three pitchers with MLB experience handled the final three innings. Zach McCallister surrendered one run in the seventh. Packy Naughton and Blake Parker hurled a scoreless inning each.

Cory Spangenberg stole his second base of the season. Scott Hurst and Justin Toerner each had an outfield assist at second base.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Gwinnett, TBA (Mem) vs. Jackson Stephens RHP (0-0, 0.00) 6:45 CT.
