In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the 2004 National League Championship season, the St. Louis Cardinals will honor 24 former team members in a pregame ceremony before Saturday’s 6:15 PM game against the club’s ’04 NLCS opponent, the Houston Astros.
The ceremony will begin at 6 PM with members of the 2004 team introduced from the Cardinals dugout. Scheduled to appear from the 2004 squad are Tony La Russa, Chris Carpenter, Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen, Ray Lankford, Jason Isringhausen, Matt Morris, Woody Williams, Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis, Tony Womack, Reggie Sanders, Ray King, Julian Tavarez, Jason Simontacchi, Marlon Anderson, Kan Taguchi (So’s son), Hector Luna, Bo Hart, Walt Jocketty, José Oquendo, Joe Pettini, Barry Weinberg and CJ Cherre.
The 2004 Cardinals won 105 games (tied for second most in franchise history) and captured the NL pennant for the first time in 17 seasons. The offense was led by the MV3 trio of Albert Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds, who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in MVP voting. The starting rotation of Carpenter, Morris, Williams, Suppan and Marquis had four 15+ game winners and, combined with a shutdown bullpen featuring league saves leader Isringhausen, Tavarez, King and Steve Kline, led the league in fewest runs allowed. The 2004 roster also excelled in the field with three Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners (Edmonds, Rolen and Mike Matheny) and on the base paths with 111 stolen bases (second most in the NL). The Cardinals won the Central Division by 13 games and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS (3-1) and the Astros in the NLCS (4-3) before being swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
I still don’t believe that ’04 squad lost 4 consecutive games in October. I really try to avoid thinking about it, as it’s a sore subject. Simo was my fav player that year…..don’t ask me why.
Me either, Pugs. I was in college then and lived and died with every pitch. I was so sure that the Cards would win their first World Series in my lifetime but they fell so flat. The Red Sox have been a real thorn in the side of some of our great teams lately.

000 0 0 RaveloGoldschmidt is only hitting 250 during this winning streak. But, in fifteen games, he has 7 home runs and 19 RBIs. Wieters has four home runs, but only five RBIs. The worst BA among the starters during the streak is 212. It is more of everyone doing something than it is one or two players that are hot, although it is nice that Goldschmidt, DeJong, and O’Neil have had an RBI run.
How bad was Fowlers injury? It didn’t appear that serious. But if he were to be disabled, would you call up the hot hand (Garcia), the hotter hand (Arozarena), or Thomas? Arozarena would require a roster spot, but much like Fernandez and Woodford, it seems like it will happen between now and November any way.
For what its worth I usually get the Error cannot post at this time error message on Saturdays. I just got it again.

Not saying a 40-man spot could not be freed up now if considered a high enough priority, but it is more painful/riskier to do so now than in November, when a number of departing free agents open up spots each year.
But it seems the risk of losing Robinson or Urias seem slight. I guess right now it would be Urias, Robinson is still on the IL.
After being hurt earlier, Urias is heating up with the rest of the Memphis offense. In the last 10 games, he is batting .333 with a .400 OBP and nine RBI. Had three hits last night.
Do I think he could be taken if placed on waivers? Yes. Would it be a huge loss? Not sure. Urias has two more option years after this one, so if it was my call, I would try to keep him around if I could. It is not like there are a lot of hot middle infield prospects coming up the pipeline.
I’d rather risk Robinson, but as you noted, that is not an option now. Sosa is almost out of option runway and there seems almost no chance of him passing Edman and Munoz in the next two months. I wonder if he is tradeable? A problem is that the lack of options next year would hurt his value externally, too.
Perhaps Sosa is the guy who might prove a capable backup somewhere (Other than St Louis). Also, maybe Williams is out for the year, and could be placed on the 60 day DL? No matter what, I would like to see Fernandez added the most. I just don’t want to see CMart, Gallegos, Gant, Brebbia worn out. An extra arm would be invaluable, as I don’t value Mayers that much. Fernandez is younger, and has 3 good pitches.
There are service time and salary implications with calling up a minor leaguer, just to place him on the 60-day DL. If they wanted to go there, they could do it with Reyes or Gomber – but I suspect they will avoid this as they have in the past.
Re: Celebrating the 04 NL Champions who got swept by the Red Sox in the series. Do you think that in 2028 the Cards will be celebrating the 2013 team that won the NL but got beat (but not swept) by the Red Sox in the series. That might involve having to invite Mike Matheny back and saying nice words about the job he did (and he did do a nice job with the talent he was given).
Sorry to say I am doubtful about tonights game. Flaherty did a beautiful job last night but those are some mighty big Astro bats he contained and I am not sure Ponce can deliver the same. He and Hudson seem to start games looking like they are trying to hit the broad side of a barn but the offense steps in and rights the ship to make their records look good. Too bad Jacko could not have that kind of luck.
I have not been a CMart fan but I have to give him some kudos for last nights performance. He actually looked like he was interested. At times in the past I am not sure he could have passed a drug test.
Gerrit Cole is really good. This will be a tough challenge.

Cole will get his Ks but the Cards typically do better than expected against the high end pitchers. They know him pretty well. It will be up to Ponce to match Cole shot for shot. He needs to get back on the solid start track tonight.

There are a few posters on here who have advocated bringing him back next year. I would hold off on that. Besides that decision won’t come until the winter.

The only downside is that Cole will make major $$$. I’ve seen as high as $200 million thrown out there. His career has turned around in Houston though and it’s possible he could end up worth it a la Scherzer. I’d definitely be interested in a thorough look at him in FA.
It’s funny how times change…early on in their careers, there was actually some debate regarding Wacha vs Cole as future top flight starters. Ok, not actually funny…more sad for the Cards in the “what could have been” mode.
Right now DeLeon is our ace, has a 2.82 era! Only one game though. Cole is a good pitcher. Maybe we can wear him out with pitch count and finish up strong enough to beat ’em tonight! Gonna need some offense tonight! We need to kidnap Tony LaRussa and hide him in the broom closet until he agrees to come back and work for the club. Teams lookin’ good. Go Cardinals!
If Ponce de Leon pitches tonight like he did against Pittsburgh on Monday, we are in trouble. I don’t think any pitcher could get away with that kind of performance twice in a row. He only lasted 3 innings and it took him 90 pitches to get that far. The Pirates should have just stood in the batter’s box and waited for ball four, and they would have had him out of the game after one inning.

I see that Wong has had trouble with Cole. Here’s hoping that his hot streak survives this one. He has not struck out since the first two games after the break.
I see that Carp is 0-6 at AAA with 3Ks, and now 0-3 at AA with a K. You have to wonder what has happened to his batting eye or form.
That outfield coupled with the starter who has the highest fly ball % might not be the best mix. You have to hope it pays off with early runs for the lead and bring Bader in at the appropriate time.
I’d jump rope naked in the middle of Times Square during rush hour to get Cole in a Redbirds uni. Stlcard25 is correct…..I do remember the times when Cole and Wacha were mentioned in the same breath. Matter of fact, didn’t Wacha beat Cole in the playoffs his rookie year? You wonder what happened to Wacha? He sure looked like he was going to be an elite+ pitcher at one time.
Well, once again I would like to apologize for leading the board astray with an errant Cardinal prediction. It is my sincere hope that none of our esteemed posters put major coin on our Cards game to finish with the exact score that I predicted. If you play the runs over/under or the winning team based on my predictions, then all of your wildest financial dreams would swiftly come to fruition. Last night I called it 6-4 Cards and it finished 5-3 Cards. Time to redeem myself. I’m calling tonight’s game 7-6 Houston….hope I’m terribly wrong!
