Looking forward to this one tonight. Hopefully Kenny Hudson can have a good game and not walk batters. The Pirates bats may have come to life in the 10th last night. We were EXTREMELY fortunate to have won that game.

And maybe the Giants can do us another favor and beat the Cubs again tonight. I am glad we don’t have to play at San Francisco any more this year.

After all the Ks last night, facing Archer isn’t the best remedy. He has been decidedly mediocre so hopefully they can keep that train rolling. Dakota typically just needs to keep it in the park to be effective. That’s gonna be the key to this entire game tonight, I think. If he can hold the Pirates to 2 or fewer runs in 6+ innings, I think the Cards win handily. If not, Archer may be too much for the offense. I’ll cautiously call it 5-2 Cards.

The Giants-cubs games is particularly intriguing with Darvish and Bumgarner on the mound. Are the Giants seriously shopping Bumgarner or are they now in? With the Giants resurgence, this game could have a playoff feel to it and we know that’s where Bumgarner previously excelled. Darvish has had two very good starts since the break and the cubs think the guy they paid for has finally showed up. It will be an enjoyable game to watch, especially if the Cards take care of business first. Three more 1-run victories by the Cards, Giants, and Reds is all I’m asking for.

Holy schmoley! I just finished watching last night’s game on MLB-TV. Scared the bejesus out of me even though I knew the outcome in advance. I’ll tell you what, that Carlos Martinez sure raises the acid content of my stomach every time I see him come into a game these days. I hope he stops doing that. And the other Martinez! What an outfield assist! Gotta love that guy despite his “defensive liabilities.”

Well folks, the thermometer hit 106 degrees (41c) here in southwest France this afternoon. Let’s hope that team from St. Louis gets hot tonight too.

    Rah Cards!

That was a crazy one last night. That is two games on this road trip where we lead by 4 late, and almost lost it. Things seem to be breaking right for this club.

Mike M is an exciting addition tonight if finally healthy. It really seemed they were far closer to stashing him rather than rushing him.

Crazy game last night! Good to see Goldschmidt,Martinez and Carlos shine. Good team play almost everybody got a hit! Looks to me like we have a real good chance tonight. Hudson has a not good Ks to Walks ratio. Unless hes a double play expert he will need to keep that diwn. Those free bases are real killers. Go Cardinals!

Hate to say it, but this one won’t be pretty tonight. I’m calling it 11-3 Bucs with Frazier finding the cheap seats with bat in hand once…..and maybe even twice. Stay “cool”, CardinalinFrance…….. or as my daughter says “cooo…al”.

    Carlos shined???????

The guy that recently has given up a lot of hits and runs??? That Carlos?

He gave up, what, a homerun and 2-3 other hits/walks last night. And you call that shining???

As I’ve said many times before, you never know what you are going to get with Carlos Martinez.

Hey Ratsbuddy. I liked that he hung in there to close it out. I wouldn’t have left him in there either the way things went but the pen is wore out. Not getting enough innings from our starters. Carlos seems be the best we have fir a closer right now. Don’t know if you have seen the post about how many consecutive games hes pitched in.We have way too many 1 run games. When the cupboard is bare you gotta go with what you got, Go Cardinals!

Am I in the minority about ambivalence with Mayers? Sure he has had some good spring trainings, and has an intriguing arm. I also give credit that he was thrown against the wolves when he made he made his debut against the Dodgers. But for a pitcher that had a 4.70 era last season, and a career 6.94 era that does not impress. I think he may be a AAAA guy, as his minor league career has been very good. The hope is that he has improved. I am not sure about that, but much like Shreve, if he doesn’t do any better, it’s time to outright him, or trade him, as we have better options. (See Junior Fernandez)

Mayers is ok. Like I said before, he and Webb and Helsley are probably all similarly valued right now. They’re not bad as your last reliever but if you could upgrade them I’d do it gladly.

As for Fernandez, he’s young still and has risen two levels already this year. I’m OK with starting his clock next year as part of a little bullpen rebuild, since Hicks will be out the whole year.

Brian, would Shreve really elect free agency and forfeit the remainder of his $900k salary if not claimed?

Depends on how frustrated he is with his current state of affairs. Also, what other teams might tell his agent about opportunity with them could influence his decision (if it gets to that).

I’m not thrilled with Munoz in center. He did manage to make O’Neil looked experienced last night. But, he was 0-3 with 3 Ks. Bader can do that and cover center, as well as most of left and right. Munoz has to hit to play.

I’m not feeling the excitement about Mayers that some are…. Shreve being a lefty seems like a equal pitcher and is LH. Am I missing something?

Hudson has done an excellent job of keeping the ball on the ground…but when it does go in the air, it goes over the fence. He has a league worst HR/FB%. He simply must avoid the big mistakes like he gave up to Marte.

I can’t compare Helsley to Webb. One is a minor league veteran who has bounced around a few teams. Helsley, IMO, ought to be tried as a starter. At a minimum, Helsley would look awfully good in the late innings, as a high octane fastball guy. Webb is only slightly better than Shreve.
