25, have to call out your lumping of Helsley with Webb and Mayers. Helsley not only has pitched extremely at the ML level (small sample size) he also has greater upside both has a starter and a reliever.
With a week to go in July, Goldschmidt already has as many RBI (19) as in his prior two best months as a Cardinal together.
Hudson staked to a lead and trying to hand it right back. Looking just like the first inning…two on and none out in the 5th.
What a magic trick by Hudson. No runs for the Pirates after having the bases loaded and none out. Guess they were channeling their inner Cardinals.
I can’t compare Helsley to Webb. One is a minor league veteran who has bounced around a few teams. Helsley, IMO, ought to be tried as a starter. At a minimum, Helsley would look awfully good in the late innings, as a high octane fastball guy. Webb is only slightly better than Shreve.

Long term, I agree that they don’t belong together as comparables. Helsley is a potential starter or good reliever. But *this year*, I’ll defend my statement…all three are average relievers. Helsley is trying to come back from injury and has a 5+ ERA at Memphis with only slightly better peripherals. His MLB peripherals aren’t that great either in that small sample. It would not be wise to suggest that he’ll suddenly become an above average reliever this year. Next year or beyond…sure. Webb and Mayers are also average types who won’t kill you but are not going to be much above average without a lot of luck either. Any of them could be upgraded to the benefit of the ‘pen.
Shreve is below average and not even a good LOOGY.
Wouldn’t mind having at least one more run. Maybe, O’Neil will break out of his mini-slump ahead of Wieters, DeJong, and Wong.
Hudson out after just 84 pitches. Frazier has managed to outfox him today but I’d like to see the bullpen rested a little more.
Pirates’ TV announcers (Blass and Brown) went on and on over the Edman play. Brown even threw in “….. and without disrespecting Matt Carpenter …. he can’t make that play …” They were actually gushing over the play.
Was hoping the Cards would add on against Stratton. That guy has been awful this year and the Cards couldn’t make a dent in two innings. Now I have a bad feeling for this game. If Gallegos holds them down in the 8th, who gets the 9th? Miller, Gant?
Stratton with the nearly immaculate inning, only thwarted by Wong’s two strike groundout. He struck out Munoz and Bader in what may be a career outing.
Gameday shows the first four pitches to Newman were strikes. Two were called balls. Now it becomes a foul ball battle and Newman finally lines out to Dejong.
