stlcard25ParticipantPomeranz is bad, and Hudson has been quite good lately. Hopefully both pitch to their norms.
July 5, 2019 at 8:47 am #96928The Cubs are off today so an opportunity to make up a game in the win column.

July 5, 2019 at 10:53 am #96945What’s the story on Gant? Have I overlooked something?
July 5, 2019 at 12:28 pm #96946<What’s the story on Gant? Have I overlooked something?>
Haven’t seen anything yet. So I assume they just took him out to keep him fresh and let Carlos get some game time.
July 5, 2019 at 1:13 pm #96952Is Edman for real, or another flash in the pan? Either way, they gotta play him everyday until they find out.
July 5, 2019 at 1:19 pm #96955I am hoping he is the next Tommy LaStella, minus the injury.
July 5, 2019 at 2:30 pm #96960<Is Edman for real, or another flash in the pan? Either way, they gotta play him everyday until they find out.>
Play him until the other teams find out and then we will know but I suspect he is better overall than some who are on the 25 man now. New players seem to go through a period when the opponents have to figure out a way to pitch him. That will be the proof of the pudding.
July 5, 2019 at 3:49 pm #96966Edman has some pop in that bat. What if we had the next Ryno on our hands. You just have to trot him out there every day…..without hesitation. Anyone else going to be game threading it tonight?
July 5, 2019 at 3:57 pm #96967Brian, good article on shifting. I suspect batting will adapt over time to negate the advantage of shifting. Will likely start in college by developing skills to hit on both sides of the field in addition to bunting. Are there any individual stats, by player, on how they hit against the shift? I know commentators seem to come up with numbers, but is there a defined stat for that?
July 5, 2019 at 4:46 pm #96969Edman is really replacing Carpenter who has been totally ineffective. We have had an unusual aspect to our lineup. I haven’t done stats on it, but it seems that if the top of the lineup scores, the other team tends to come back. Three-run homers from Ozuna have given early leads, which we lost.
But, when the middle or bottom of the batting order does something, we win—unless we put people on for Carpenter at the top. Wong gets some big hits to go with his Ks. Bader hits 209, but a lot of those hits lead to runs. The top of the order seems to get hits and then ground into DPs.
Edman and McNeil at least get singles. McNeil hasn’t shown the power in the majors.
We had Goldschmidt hit a leadoff double. He stayed at second, moved to third with two out. That happens too often. A leadoff double becomes worthless for us, leads to a run for anyone else.
Just keep Carp on the bench.
July 5, 2019 at 4:58 pm #96970I, for one, have high hopes for Edman and would like to see him given a good shot at proving himself. On the other hand, I recall getting all excited not so long ago about a guy named Aledmys Diaz who was knocking the cover off the ball for a good long stretch, until he wasn’t. But my gut tells me Edman is the real deal.
Tonight’s game doesn’t start until 4:30 a.m. my time, so I’ll just have to check out the box score in the morning.
Rah Cardinals.
July 5, 2019 at 5:17 pm #96971Yes Edman has been subbing for Carp lately but that isn’t long term. Carp will come off the IL on July 12 and will probably be back in the lineup. The Cardinals aren’t going to sit Carp with all of the money they owe him. That just isn’t their style. I am thinking Edman has a better chance of replacing Wong, if not this season then before next season.
July 5, 2019 at 6:11 pm #96972With a 4:30am start time, our esteemed friend, CIF, is the only one amongst us who has a valid excuse not to be on tonight’s game thread. As of now, it looks as if I’m the only one who’ll be onboard. It’s becoming painfully obvious that this 9pm start time is way past most of you guys’ bedtime……which is pretty sad for a Friday night. As has become our game thread custom of reporting on what we’re having for din-din, it’s Glass Nickel pizza for me, accompanied with some fried mushrooms and Breyers chocolate peanut butter ice cream…..and let us not forget the hands down best soda pop ever made….. 7-Up. I wonder what CardinalinFrance is having, as his last reported dinner was quite the sweet dish!
July 5, 2019 at 6:12 pm #96973Looking forward to the game tonight. Wish I could tune in to the Giants announcers, Kuiper and Krukow, they are really good. But, of course, the Giants broadcast will be blacked out. Either way, we SHOULD win two of three this weekend in SF.
And for lunch I had a center cut pork rib chop in the Air Fryer, a couple of ears of corn-on-the-cob, mashed potatoes/gravy, a piece of banana cream pie from the Amish restaurant, a Klondike ice cream bar, and some 7-Up. Tonight for my late night snack it will probably be baloney and another piece of banana cream pie and a cigar or two during the game.

July 5, 2019 at 7:46 pm #96974Yamamoto had a couple rough games in a row but now baffling the braves tonight. I think we should have figured him out enough to score over 14 innings but he might be a legit pitcher
July 5, 2019 at 7:56 pm #96975Lot of good comments on this thread. Carp can be a very good Left hand batter when hes hitting. We don’t have many. Can’t see playing anybody just cause they make alot unless you’re just giving up on the season. The players hitting against the shift will have to learn skills to counter it or they will just become bench players. Good comment on us trying to get runs in with 2 out situations. So many wasted at bats with lead off doubles. Following batters just wasting their at bats. Just pitiful! Hence the angst! Thats also right about new players being hot until the opposition learns how to pitch them. What happened to Reyes. I had jerk chicken , rice, mac+cheese, ginger pumpkin soup, yum, yum
We are lookin better_ Go Cardinals!July 5, 2019 at 8:01 pm #96976Banana cream pie, 7-Up and a Palma Real is the best threesome since Tinkers to Evers to Chance, Freddie to Cookie to John, Ozzie to Tommy to Jack, or do I say Farrah to Cheryl to Kate, Rat.
Having Edman in this lineup leading off completely changes and improves the complexion of this entire lineup. Normally by the 4th inning of tonight’s game , this thread would be littered with “Cy Pomeranz” comments. But not tonight……with Edman leading the charge there will be no “Cy Pomeranz” references. I’m calling this one 6-3 Cards with Edman finding the bay for the Birds with bat in hand.
July 5, 2019 at 8:03 pm #96977Ginger pumpkin soup? Sweet move, Wooster! I just may have to get your recipe for that one.
July 5, 2019 at 8:30 pm #96980We won’t know about Edman for a while. You see hot starts by flops. Right now, he is better than Carp. Right now, Munoz is better than Carp. Of course, right now, a carp is better than Carp. Wong has value, and may get better. Carp is experienced enough that he should be able to work through these problems. Instead, he is getting worse. Goldschmidt and DeJong need to learn not to be Carp.
