His name has come up on this board the last few weeks. This is the kind of signing we expect the Cards to make this winter. One year deal. Not sure about $ yet.

ParticipantHes decent, can show flashes of greatness at times. Gets hurt a lot though or seems to. Its not a bad signing depending on money
December 13, 2025 at 4:08 pm #297459Tommy John surgery in 2021 and flexor tendon surgery in 2023. He also had the esophagus surgery.
This past season was his first back on the mound. He seems to have held up physically, but went through two teams and was looking for a job this winter. It could work out well though, or not.
December 13, 2025 at 4:12 pm #297460This front office like pitchers with significant injury histories…

jj-cf-stlParticipantI think CB just spent some Bill bucks.
December 13, 2025 at 4:23 pm #297464May made $2.1 million last year.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI will guess 8mil w/bonuses for GS or IP. Just a guess.
December 13, 2025 at 5:02 pm #297470This is definitely a quantity over quality signing but – what can it hurt – If they get 1/3 to 1/2 season of starts out of him I guess that will be mission accomplished?
December 13, 2025 at 5:18 pm #297471Too much hair.
December 13, 2025 at 5:27 pm #297472From what I read he lost quite a bit of weight after the esophagus surgery…quote below is from ESPN article
While May’s sinker velocity dipped from its peak of 98 mph to 94.5, the 6-foot-6 May was trying to regain the 40 pounds he lost in the first three weeks after the surgery. May bulked up from 185 pounds to around 205 during the season, and in the time since he has added another 15 pounds, leaving him just five short of his previous playing weight.
Seems like trying to catch lightning in a bottle, but at lest they are taking a chance, I am asssuming it is similar to Gibson/Lynn deals with some incentives
December 13, 2025 at 5:33 pm #297473Maybe a team option year in case he works out.
December 13, 2025 at 5:35 pm #297474We’ll see. Not thrilled about it. Just have to trust in Bloom.
So it’s looking like so far:
Liberatore
McGreevy
May
Fitts
LeahyPallante could be trade bait or to the pen.
December 13, 2025 at 5:41 pm #297475One thing to add on to his good upside, is not having to call up some of the guys up to cover the still lacking SP innings. Mathews, Mautz, Henderson can develop vs being rushed up.
As of today, Pallante might still have to be in the rotation so pray for a couple of additional signings.
December 13, 2025 at 6:46 pm #297477This doesn’t seem like a team that is rebuilding with a move like that. He’s got a nasty sinker iirc.
They can trade Contreras and I still think this team will be competitive.
December 13, 2025 at 7:11 pm #297478We’ll see what happens, but this RHP’er has never worked more than 100 IP’ed in a season until ’25. So he’s got a lot of innings to labor through before he can hold a candle to the great Jake Westbrook…
December 13, 2025 at 7:54 pm #297484If the team were to trade Donovan for any of the top three Seattle starters, this rotation becomes very interesting.
May’s signing seems a little Chris Carpentery. There isn’t the year of rehab involved and Carpenter had more prior MLB success, but the idea of a big 6’6″ starter with wicked stuff rings true. May can’t possess Carpenter’s demeanor, but think about all the teasing May must have faced as the gangly red head. Maybe he can tap into some latent hostility…still can’t touch Carp though.December 13, 2025 at 8:11 pm #297487December 13, 2025 at 8:31 pm #2974911982 willie
ParticipantNot to rain om anyones parade but i cant believe anyone thinks dustin may somehow moves the needle. Hes often injured, coming in unproven to stand up to the grind, doesnt improve our offense. I guess im just too much of a realist.
December 13, 2025 at 8:33 pm #297492I have no way of knowing the accuracy, but May is listed at 6’6″ 180 lbs. Chris Carpenter was also 6’6″ but tipped the scales at over 230 lbs. and, in addition to being as big and strong as a bull, had labored through over 870 IP’ed before being signed as a Cardinal for the lofty sum of 300K…Comparing this new guy to CC is not unlike comparing a Shetland pony to a draft horse.
December 13, 2025 at 8:37 pm #297494They will trade Contreras and compete
Watch and see this so called rebuild not happen.
December 13, 2025 at 8:39 pm #297495Brin mentioned the Cardinals will need to clear a 40-man roster spot for May. Who gets offed?
December 13, 2025 at 9:29 pm #297496There are at least four guys that wouldn’t hurt to shed off the 40 man.
December 13, 2025 at 9:33 pm #297497If it were my pick, it would be Prieto. I’m not sure why he was ever added to begin with. Raquet, Fermin, Koperniak, or Roycroft are the other options.
December 13, 2025 at 9:43 pm #297499Someone could get traded for prospects. The pending physical gives you days to work with.
December 13, 2025 at 10:04 pm #297500For the current status of the team, I think this is a good signing. This team is not going to be in the playoff hunt and May is an upside ticket with low risk. The upside is he gains his weight back and he ups the K%, he can build up trade value to acquire some longer term piece. He also may like it in STL and want to stay on for more years which I would be open to with his age. Risk isn’t high as it is a 1 year deal and I don’t think the money will be that bad. It is almost surely a 1 year deal despite the mutual option as if May performs bad, the Cards won’t pick their end up and vice versa if May performs very well.
