I know that we have a pinned thread above for Trades and Rumors but it is often overlooked so I started this one that we can use, especially for non-Cardinal trades since Cardinal trades often have their own thread. The deadline expires at 5pm on Thursday. Some trades are already starting.
July 25, 2025 at 1:50 pm #288275Get MO gone.

MLB .com’s @Feinsand with the breaking news! With the #Yankees landing Ryan McMahon that assuredly takes them out of the running any potential deals involving #STLCards veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado. https://t.co/nU91SYvLe4

July 25, 2025 at 2:20 pm #288281That fits the description of #STLCards All-Star and stellar leadoff hitter Brendan Donovan. The Cards have given no indication they would move the Gold Glover, but they do have 2B/SS JJ Wetherholt — the top prospect in the org — thriving at Triple A and poised for a promotion. https://t.co/hIqeAlT5n7

July 25, 2025 at 5:34 pm #288298July 25, 2025 at 5:47 pm #288301The Rockies have wanted to move on from McMahon for awhile. One of those “from the outhouse to the penthouse” situations for McMahon. As the note says, that likely ends any possible deal for Arenado.
July 25, 2025 at 8:33 pm #288334Yeah I doubt anyone trades for Arenado. Word was the Yankees were concerned with Arenado’s declining offense. I think he would have more of a chance to be traded in the offseason as his contract this year is quite big. The Cards could kick in some money and maybe someone would bite this offseason, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up either.
Lets watch the Cards decide not be be sellers after a win tonight though. They really need to trade Helsey, Maton, Matz for a few prospects as someone is better than nothing.

ParticipantIf Mozeliak trades Donovan I’ll have to pay a visit to the Front Office and have a word with him regarding his sabotaging the Cardinal’s team, ala Edman for Fedde. I for one will not be happy but rather furious. Donovan is a big part of what’s left of the heart and soul of the team.
July 26, 2025 at 8:31 am #288366Here’s how I see it…
No one wants Nado, and Gray doesn’t want leave. We are stuck with them, for better or worse.
We have a huge surplus of lefty bats. Gorman, Noot, Burly, Scott, Hurdy Gurdy with Wetherholt arriving no later than Opening Day 2026.
Therefore, we have to package one or two of these guys…with a pitcher or two, in order to receive a legit, MLB Ready, RH OF bat.
I’d love to move Burly as I don’t like slow, unathletic players. And 12 homers? That won’t get it done. But, I also feel he has trade value to certain teams. I’d move Noot…I’d move Gorman in the right deal.
Can’t move Hurdy Gurdy. His defensive versatility and ability to hit makes him invaluable. And at 28, he should have several outstanding years left.
Can’t move Scott. Who would play CF? He provides dynamic speed & defense (speed sorely lacking on this team) and while his hitting has disappointed, he has a decent OBP & fWAR.
Package a couple of these guys with a Helsley, Matz, Maton and it may bring us a piece or two we really need. Yes, it won’t be easy and yes it will be risky, take guts & creativity…but it can and should be done.
NOW is the time to shake up this organization!

jj-cf-stlParticipantMariners picked up 35.5% of Naylor’s salary. Yankees picked up 34.9% of McMahon’s 2025. – Cots
July 26, 2025 at 9:15 am #288373Makes sense. Other teams want the Cardinals’ best player, not the ones they want to get rid of.
July 26, 2025 at 9:31 am #288376Right! I don’t see why it would ever need to be a trade rumor that a team would be interested in taking Donovan off our hands.
July 26, 2025 at 9:37 am #288378
jj-cf-stlParticipantI’d be looking to buy low on Noot. Hope that’s not possible.
July 26, 2025 at 10:07 am #288380
JJ Wetherholt . . . thriving at Triple A
Ha ha that’s funny, he’s been there 10 games.
July 26, 2025 at 10:55 am #288381I can’t see Donovan being traded. We need him to play 3B after the 2026 season. Helsley won’t bring much of a return, so there’s no sense in giving him up since he’s still our 9th inning guy. Romero probably has the most value. But giving him up now would bring a lot of misery to the bullpen for the rest of this year, plus we need him to be our closer next year. Gorman is injured, so he’s not getting traded. All in all, I don’t see where the Cardinals have anybody that they can trade at this year’s trade deadline.
July 26, 2025 at 10:56 am #288382Westerholt has thrived at every level Bling. Why would aaa be any different.
July 26, 2025 at 11:28 am #288383Okay, so JJW has only been at Memphis for 10 games…he has what…4 HR? I’d say that’s thriving…sure isn’t struggling!
July 26, 2025 at 11:51 am #288385It isn’t surprising that the Dodgers and Yankees would be interested in Donovan but I would find it rather surprising the Cardinals would actually do it if they plan to be competitive in 2026. If they do make that trade then we can stop calling it a reset because that would be a full on rebuild. The return would have to be massive.

jj-cf-stlParticipantEqual value for Donovan is an all-star for two more seasons. If it’s a SP’r, we’re not worse.
But, trading back on Donny to gain additional service years, waters down the immediate value, but could bring surplus value long term.
As an example, Donny for Libby. I’d make that trade to add pitching.July 26, 2025 at 12:56 pm #288387Can’t move Scott. Who would play CF?
Not having a replacement CF ready to go didn’t stop Mo from moving Edman.
July 26, 2025 at 12:58 pm #288388Westerholt has thrived at every level Bling. Why would aaa be any different.
I didn’t say he would or wouldn’t. I pointed out its ridiculous to say he already has when he’s been there 10 games.
July 26, 2025 at 1:00 pm #288389I’m sure teams have been checking in on Donovan’s services for a couple years now. St. Louis has been down a notch and these GMs and POBO wouldn’t be doing their jobs to at least check on him. The question is will they be willing to pay the sky high asking price the Cardinals have set?
Right now the focus should be on what the max haul would be on a Helsley deal. I could see another 3-4 way deal coming with us subtracting an expiring deal or two, Gorman and a catcher somewhere on the big club or or the minors and us getting some things we need in the now and something maybe in the near future ready to contribute.
Not out of the realm to hold on to Steven Matz either. Don’t see much coming with that money still owed. Could just keep him to babysit Mikolas and Pallante. Lol
July 26, 2025 at 1:06 pm #288390Not having a replacement CF ready to go didn’t stop Mo from moving Edman.
He sort of had a defensive replacement already in Siani. The other option was Noot. Who is passable in CF.
