March 27, 2024 at 8:08 pm #245156It’s here! It’s here! Finally!
I hope I get my John Deere mower repaired and back home in time for 1st pitch. The front wheel is flat. Was a pain to take off.
And for din-din on Opening Day it will be a Ribeye Steak in the Air Fryer. Along with some french fries in the oven. An ice cold slushy Mt. Dew and a some Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream for dessert!
And I am going out on a limb in this one and call it 8-3 St. Louis. Victor Scott II gets two hits and steals two bases. And Nolan Arenado, who is yet to homer this season, finally gets off the schneid with a long dong to LF.
Happy Days are here again!
r/Esteemed Rat
p.s. might be some Catfish Fiddlers on Friday.
March 27, 2024 at 8:26 pm #245157That sounds like a feast, Rat.
ESPN is only giving the Cards a 31% chance of winning. But I noticed that figure is attributed to ‘ESPN Analytics’, so we can dismiss it as so much twaddle.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGlasnow is a pretty easy read. He’s shutdown vs rhb’s and league avg-ish vs lhb’s. He can have a BB problem occasionally and self-destruct.
A lefty heavy lineup by Oli, with good strike zone patience seems ideal. I could see…
L Donovan LF
R Goldy
L Gorman
R Arenado
L Burleson RF
R Contreras
L Carpenter DH
R Winn
L Scott CF… until we get Glasnow out of there. I can’t see lefty Crawford as ready to start so Winn joins the three vet rhb’s.

stlcard25ParticipantShould be an interesting year…I can’t remember one lately where the variance between outcomes seems so large. Hopefully the pitching staff can hold it together enough and the young bats can supplement the aging stars.
I agree with jj…let’s get a bunch of lefties out there and make it tougher on Glasnow. It’s hard to imagine Mikolas shutting the LA lineup down. If we win this one, I’d see it as a 6-5, 7-4 type game.

ParticipantIt’s kind of amazing that the Dodgers spent $300M on a pitcher that will be third in their rotation.
They also spent a lot on Ohtani who won’t pitch this year at all. Then there’s Buehler and Paxton, not that Glasnow is a model citizen for health. They’ll just buy someone at the deadline though if it falls apart.
March 28, 2024 at 8:39 am #245177I am very optimistic on the season but I do expect a slow start. West Coast trips are always difficult and with the injuries we have now, I expect a rocky start but a positive start.
March 28, 2024 at 8:41 am #245178I’d be totally shocked if Victor was not leading this game off today, JJ. I believe in Scott’s case, hitting him near the bottom of the order would only throw him out of whack and not ease any pressure. I’m unfortunately calling this one 5-4 Bad Guys…..but we’ll get em tomorrow! I see Gorman throttling a long one high up into the upper reaches of the center field rafters to get the ball rolling on his stellar 2024 campaign.
Set the John Deere aside for now, Rat……it’s opening day. I know Fridays are our traditional catfish fiddler day, but I’m almost tempted to indulge in some tasty fiddlers today. I’ll sprinkle in some frys, slaw, deviled eggs and 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies into the din-din. Hey Rat…..is Whitey HerDog still with us? Haven’t heard a thing about her in months. Looks like there’s going to be a new addition to the Pugs family, as I have once again been coerced into matrimony. I’m marrying my ex-wifey’s younger sister and it’ll happen this coming September. My dog has always been absolutely enamored with her……which carries much weight with me. She’s 16 years my junior and a gem, gang!
March 28, 2024 at 8:42 am #245179Everyone knows Walker will be in the lineup. It doesn’t have to make sense.
March 28, 2024 at 8:52 am #245180Some guys never learn. But congrats Pugs.
March 28, 2024 at 8:54 am #245181
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe wonk room should favor Carp at DH over Walker, to start this game. So if Walker starts, who you crediting that to BB? Oli? The FO?
March 28, 2024 at 9:25 am #245182jj,Walker has so much hype shine you need sunglasses to look at him.
March 28, 2024 at 9:30 am #245183
jj-cf-stlParticipantSo PR drives your lineup and when you need a scapegoat, there’s always the wonk room. Got it.
March 28, 2024 at 9:39 am #245184Some guys never learn. But congrats Pugs.
Ha! We sure don’t…..thanks Bling. What a banner day this should be. Watching the Crew-Metropolitan game at high noon. Then our Cards game at 3. Then I’m going to the Steve Hackett concert in Madison at 8pm. And to top things off, I’ll have to tape one of the collegiate tournament games to watch when I get home from the concert.
March 28, 2024 at 9:44 am #245185
jj-cf-stlParticipantGlasnow faced 222 rhb’s last season and 263 lhb’s. We can see how mlb stacked the lineups against, w/lhb’s last season. That ratio is nowhere close to common.
He allowed a 95 ops+ to lhb’s and a 34 to rhb’s. Any rhb who avoids Glasnow is being done a favor, but, if Walker plays we want 4 for 4 and a walkoff 😀 of course!
Lineup construction is pretty clear vs this SP. I’m anxious to see who starts.
March 28, 2024 at 9:48 am #245187opening day
holiday in our home every year
I really wish i was more positive about the team
It’s the most pessimistic I have been for a Cardinals team at the beginning of the year in a very long time
No more “on paper” discussions, no more “spring training stats matter or don’t matter”
win or lose, move on and adjust
Go Cards!
March 28, 2024 at 9:53 am #245188I would be very surprised if Walker is made a platoon player with Burleson.
Bling, you are against both analytics and Walker. So, how do you see this situation? Please be specific. Who would you start in RF today and why?
Thanks.
March 28, 2024 at 10:00 am #245189I would have Walker in RF because he’s Walker and he plays every day.
March 28, 2024 at 10:01 am #245190Unfortunately I see this one a fairly easy romp for the boys in blue. Glasnow will likely dominate through five, and then we will see if we can get to their bullpen.
That will be the one hope, that Mikolas can keep it close in the first half, and we can score enough to maybe squeak away with say a 4-3 win. However, I get the sense that the Miler gets knocked around some – maybe I am thinking too much about last year’s opening day start.
But in all honesty, who knows. You can throw all the analysis in the world out as that is based on a lot of data samples. One game though, and anything is possible.
Wow, Pugs walking down the aisle again, with his former sister-in-law? Hoping for the best but that just seems real awkward. I will say this, my step son was with a young lady for maybe 5-6 years; great gal and they lived together and all that. They eventually broke up, and now he is with her best friend. No marriage plans though, and they are all still good friends. They all go to a hockey bar on a regular basis to watch Avalanche games.
No idea what we will be having for din-din later. Whatever it is, it will taste great if we win this afternoon.
March 28, 2024 at 10:02 am #245191To clarify, I didn’t ask what you think Marmol will do. If you were managing, would you play Walker?
March 28, 2024 at 10:08 am #245192I like jj’s L-R-L….lineup, but as Brian said, you know Walker will play every day. I would not be too surprised to see Crawford in there today though, with Winn sitting. Maysn will play most of the time, but I am okay if he sits the opener.
Back in the day I recall us opening against LA, and Red started Uecker at catcher given it was Koufax pitching, with McCarver sitting.
March 28, 2024 at 10:17 am #245195Walker in for Carpenter, Donovan DH and Burleson LF is more likely I think.
DH – Donovan L
1B – Goldy R
2B – Gorman L
3B – Arenado R
C – Contreras R
RF – Walker R
LF – Burleson L
CF – Scott L
SS – Winn RMarch 28, 2024 at 10:24 am #245196
jj-cf-stlParticipantI like to look at each daily lineup as saying nothing about long term. A daily lineup is vs that games SP, and adjust to the pen.
