At first glance this trade seems to have a light return. I like the bat, but the 2 pitchers have plus 5 eras.
Also I wonder who replaces these 3 pitchers, plus possibly Flaherty. Would Mcgreevy and LKiberatore be added to the rotation?
We’ll have to wait for Brian’s article to see what he thinks. My knee jerk thought is Mo did well unloading the rentals, especially Hicks. It does make me less pessimistic about what else he could do.
I really like Saggese too. I think he’s got “Donovan” potential. He’s right handed hitter, but has the ability to play anywhere in the IF. Anything I read about him talks about his “baseball IQ” and being a great teammate. I think hes at least a reserve IF and has the potential to be a more regular. The “key” to the trade to me though is Roby. He’s a former 3rd round pick that ranked #11 in Texas system. He has solid 4 pitches and brings a live 96 and “high spin” curveball. Hes been on the IL since early June with a shoulder injury. His development will be key to this trade being successful. If he develops into a quality SP then I think its a win for the situation, if hes a late inning RP then it can still be a win, if hes not able to get past shoulder problems then it really makes it questionable.
Management is doing what we thought – unloading the possible free agents while not gutting the big league roster.
Flaherty still not dealt, nor position players like DeJong so there will likely be more transactions in the next day.
Next they will need to do some “81 Herzog” at the Winter Meetings and shuffle the deck to bring the club back to contender status.
I’m sure Montgomery’s happy to be going to a first place team and he should help the Rangers, but I don’t think he’ll be enough to hold off the Astros in the ALW. Still a lot of baseball to play, but August and the dog days seem to always be when teams assert themselves for the final push in September. With all these WC’s and some closely contested division races, it should be entertaining to see what happens from here on in. Even though the Cardinals are irrelevant, the NLC looks like it could develop into a 3 way dogfight and LA/SF always has the potential to display some genuine bloodsport if the NLW stays close near the end.
I think Atlanta takes it all this year. They have been solid all season. Tampa looked all-world for about two months, but have settled in to merely really good since then. Might be an all southern fried World Series this year if Tampa turns it on again in post season.
Oh, and since this is about Montgomery and Stratton, I wonder how they will like playing for a veteran manager with a pedigree of success? They might be writing texts to their friends and family about how “this is how a big league team should be run on the field.”
Yeah, the Braves have been good all year long, Bikemike, and are taking on the look of how the Astros were last season in the sense of not having any soft spots. I’d sure like to see the O’s outlast Tampa in the ALE and I’ll be watching tonight’s NY at BAL game. I’ve always liked the Orioles for some odd reason. I like to say it’s because of that little bird with the big smile, but it’s probably more a case of them having all those good players for so long when I was both a young kid and all the way into my adult years. They just seemed to be right there every season for what seemed like forever.

He’s smaller than Donovan, more Edman size it looks like. Has good hitting numbers in AA. There are a couple middle infield roster slots at Memphis that could be made available real easy.
The pitchers coming with him seem iffy. I’m assuming the Cards org is looking for swing and miss, since that’s the hip thing now. Those kind of guys can run into trouble in the upper levels until they figure it out, if they figure it out. Good luck to them all.
Off topic, but this guy that the O’s have for a closer is nuts. He’s collected 28 saves with a 6-1 W/L record to go along with a 0.90 ERA in 50 IP’ed. Moreover, the kicker is that he K’s well over 5 hitters for every BB. He’s also a little imposing at 6-8 and 285 lbs…Haha! I’m not sure I want to step in to face this guy.
It’s a start, but not much more. Prospects are always a risk, but at least they’re out to prove something, so should have the motivation. Unlike many free agents just looking for their next paycheck, which we’ve suffered through in the recent past.
I have always liked the Orioles as well 1TD – like the orange & black color scheme, which was my high school colors. I was also a Frank Robinson fan as a kid, and thought the Reds were nuts trading him. He then won the Triple Crown in ‘66, and had a great APBA card. His Baltimore teams ran up 4 pennants in his 6 years there.
Those were great days for that franchise with the energetic Earl Weaver as manager. His teams always had great defense, which was a big part of our success for years. I would not be upset at all to see them win in the AL.
I think this trade was fine. I see potential up front and down the line. Time will be the rest for how good it is or was.
