After last night there is no way we win this game. First the pitching match-up is unfavorable. Second, this team is entrenched in a losing mindset. It gets to a point of where when you have a chance at a win, you are so used to messing it up that you play tight. Rather than just letting natural ability take charge, you get so afraid of making a mistake that you tense up, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
I doubt it even comes to that tonight though. I think we will be down something like 7-1 in the late innings and there won’t be any dramatics.
There has been a lot of discussion on how and why Ollie Marmol became the manager in the first place. Now that I look back on it it really shouldn’t have been a surprise that he was named manager. The first clue came in 2019 when Shildt began his first full season as manager. Who was named bench coach? Stubby? Pop? Skippy? Nope it was Ollie. The front office gave a big clue as to their pecking order so when Shildt was sent packing it should have been obvious as to who would get the job.
I bring this up to say that if Ollie is fired during this season I wouldn’t assume that Stubby will get the job. They have gone with bench coaches with the last two hires (Shildt, Ollie), and the current bench coach is Joe McEwing.
It’s baseball, so anything can happen and the Cardinals could somehow stumble into a win not unlike a drunken sailor who somehow makes his way back to ship, but yeah, I fully expect last night’s bizarre circus to follow up with an encore performance. I had strongly suspected after the first two games that Skippy would have his team prepared to go for the proverbial throat and sweep this four game set against a Redbird team that has become genuine NL fodder. There’s been several occasions this season in which competitive teams have used a series with the Cardinals as a springboard for momentum and a nice run of W’s. They’ve become the tantalizing lambchops for the hungry carnivores…At any rate, the noose is tight and I expect Skippy and his team to administer the long drop.
gscottar, none of the current staff should ascend to the top role. All of them need to go. Each one is responsible in some way for the debacle taking place this season. Rip the rearview mirror off and clean house.

When things are going bad….. the players and the fans seem to be just waiting for something to go wrong.

I’m sure there is yet another more absurd, disheartening, ridiculous, scrotum-tightening way for our birds to give away another game. We just haven’t looked diligently enough.

I don’t disagree. I am just trying to get inside Mo’s mind which is a scary place to be.
I’m only watching this team for entertainment value any more. Sadly, it hasn’t been an action thriller, more like a slapstick comedy. Still entertaining, but in the wrong way. We’ll see what laughs they can generate tonight. I wonder if Jack heard Hrabosky’s comment last night…”if Jack wants to be called the lead starting pitcher, he needs to start pitching like one.” Ouch.
A loss tonight would place the Cardinals at 17 under .500 which would be their deepest plunge this season. So far…
Same here, 4Ev. I didn’t get an opportunity to tune into last night’s game until the 6th inning, but I was rewarded by seeing both the most entertaining and interesting portion of the contest. In addition to the humorous aspect, these sorts of contests provide plenty of case studies associated with the stark contrast between a well led and competitive ballclub and one that has no sense of direction other than one that is utterly determined to find the path to a loss no matter how obscure and untraveled that path may be. As for the humorous aspect, even Warman was laughing and shaking his head during the post-game. Al managed to grit his teeth and flash the look that he displayed on the mound in the 70’s to keep from doing the same…
Yeah 1TD I find that games under .500 a very telling statistic. Just let it sink in. If you can’t win at least half your games you’re not even average. With sports as with everything big tasks are best handled in small steps.Personally I see alot of inexperienced raw talent out there right now. Offense has been ok at times but honestly our pitching overall is a joke. So commit to fix it but its not gonna happen overnight. We have been pitching short for years. So enjoy what you can for now but don’t expect too much.Sad to see it end like that last night but it was entertaining.But so is a train wreck as long as nobody gets hurt. Ollies just a puppet right now. Don’t really think the b-ball knowledge is really there. Good luck to Jack tonight-don’t get hurt. Waino to the pen is the smart move.
He probably retains enough baseball knowledge to get by, Wooster. Pardon me for saying so, but my guess is that his primary problem is an utter lack of reason and judgement coupled with inherent stupidity and a refusal to acknowledge reality.

But you missed the one third of an inning start. 5 hits and a walk. 4 runs I think it was. 20+ pitches. Once in a lifetime calibre futility.
Yeah, I’ll bet that was good. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a SP’er instantly vanish in a puff of smoke.
As ollie walked out to the mound, he had that look you get when you’re really glad something that didn’t work wasn’t your idea.
Someday we will read Wainwright’s autobiography and get a real insight into this season and Ollie as a person and manager. My thinking is that Waino will describe Ollie as a class act, very high character guy who just could not lead men.
He could very well say they won in 2022 with great years from several players, and the inspiration Pujols and Molina gave them with their play and leadership in their final seasons. Ollie rode that to success, then messed up game one of the post season series against the Phillies and things went downhill after Albert, Yadi and Maddux all left the building. With that exodus most of the leadership qualities of that 2022 team left as well. Goldy, Nado and himself have not been able to fill the void left by those three.

BikeMike, I suspect Matt Holliday came to that same conclusion and backed away from his supporting role on the management team.
